LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-06 AT 06:21PM (MST)[p]I grew up in Wyo and some of my family still lives there. 5 of us drew NR tags and headed up for the week with 10 total tags and high hopes. The week started off slow as we struggled to find the elk. Weird year in Wyo with the early snow, warming, snow, etc. On Tues. one of group shot a dandy 320-330 class bull (pics to come - need to get some and permission). With 10 tags, that was sweet to see a good bull, but still had nine to go.

Then... the 3 day craziness began...

Thurs. we finally found a few and got another good 5x6, rag and a spike (again- hopefully pics to come). We were thrilled to find a few more elk and some shootin'!

Friday we decided to try a little pocket where we thought a few bulls might lock into. My brother in law walked into the trees and 2 dandy bulls stood up - 20 yards (of course he already shot a spike!). One crashed the hill and the other ran out towards me. By that night we taking out my bull. He's a heck of a 5x5 and grosses 300+ as just a 5. Awesome beams and deceivingly wide. I can't stop staring at his back end!

Next morning, we woke up and hoped to cut the other bull as well. He looked really good a long ways away! :) We had a decent idea where he might go, so we gave it a shot. Sat. morning we set up a game plan and attacked. Before long, shots fired, buddy shoots a rag bull (first elk! :) )

As they begin to work on that elk, the draw erupts with elk. Before long, another buddy shoots and is running down to his first elk. JD had ONE day and was hoping to just shoot a cow and low and behold out walks a 6! JD is still on cloud nine. He is ruined for life now!

I walk down to help JD and it wasn't long before I hear more shots. My dad hollers to get over there and I about passed out. Wyoming's general hunt is great, but never thought we would stumble into this guy.

He goes about 340. I can't stop throwing the tape on it and making sure. He's a little narrow, but his mass and fronts are flat wonderful. My brother in law walked up and just celebrated. We had found the other big ol' boy that he jumped at 20 yards with my bull the night before!

What a crazy few days. Before we knew it 8 of 10 tags were filled, all with bulls. 5 dandies on the ground with high hopes of 2 more. The last two tags might get filled in the next few days and I will update the post if they do.

What a great hunt. Good times with family and friends and some crazy success. Again, if I get pics from the other bulls and permission, I'll post some more.

Here are some more pics of the 3 bulls from Fri/Sat. Enjoy... :)

WOW, what a sweet general elk hunt for WY! Thanks for the story and pics, very cool. I would be mounting that big one! Hate to see the cape ruined on such a bigun . . .

Great hunt!!! I second the cape comment. We need to teach you how to cape out at least to the head. My taxidermist will trade me capes for doing a European mounts. All those bulls would look awesome with a European mount.

For what it is worth, the cape was bad and frankly, had horrible color. Hard to explain, just a weird cape. We have a family member that's a taxidermist. Plenty of other capes. :)

Your old man is a great guy. He's one of our county commissioners and puts a capitol "I" in integrity. If I can track down his email address I'll give him a congrats.

Thats awesome !!! It doesn't get any better then that, Family friends and a successful hunt.

Nice, Congrats! What a great photo with the three of ya, fifty years from now, your grandkids will look at that and long for the "good ol' days"

What a way to pump up success rates!!
Thanks for the pictures of the awesome bulls!

That is one heck of a hunt!

Your 5x5 is unreal, those brow tines go on forever.

Great pics too

On a side not I love to study odds and your website is great too!

Most taxidermists will pay pretty good $ for a good cape! What a waste to wack the heads off and wreck a cape. Nice elk, poor taste in photos in my opinion. A nice field shot or whole body shot with the hunters looks nice, not out in the front yard with a head cut off.

Nice bulls and pics, theres always some whiner in the bunch as in the poster above me. Hes just mad cause hes eating tag steak and mash potatoes. People bitchin about pictures on a hunting site gets real old. Just congratulate the guy and keep your negative comments to yourself.

Hey Kirkl, I thought that the elk were nice, the pics could have been better though IMO. Didn't think that made me come across as a "whiner", if it does then I guess I will just keep my opinions to myself next time, feel free to do the same. My freezer is full BTW.

sounds like that hunt had to be b blast. great job on some good bulls. i would have liked to see all that action on our opening day. i still have two girls who need to find elk but they work when i'm off and i work when they are off.

All I can say is AWESOME! I loved reading and the way you posted the pics to every piece of the hunt. You guys killed some great elk , even the rag horns are great in my mind .
