Help me out here. I finally harvested my 1st bull after living in Colorado for 6 years. In the past, I've always purchased an OTC bull tag while attempting to close the deal on a drawn muley tag but this year decided to try the "1st Elk-Only Season" in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area.
After a pack-in via horse and 2.5 days stuck in my bag/tent due to some unknown azz-bug (wondering if the tent would collapse from the snow before my o-ring blew out) I was finally able to experience the thrill of elk hunting.
My 1st full day of hunting I proceeded to "hoochie-mama" a bull from over 625 yards (Leupold RX-III). Opposite side of the drainange, wind in my face, and consideralbe snow at 5:00PM. He was a small bull but I am convinced that elk hunting has an "excitable" factor that I've never experienced with deer. I didn't even know he was a legal bull until he came up my side of the drainage but had continued to "squeeze" for the enjoyment. I've taken whiteys and/or muleys in MT, SD, WY, WI, and CO for the last 25 years but nothing compares to "elk talkin'". An elk bugling has only one comparison...a lone loon calling on a solitary Canadian lake.
Anyways, the ivories on this bull are HUGE!!! Our outfitter/packers agreed that it was odd to see an 1.5 year old 4X4 when the majority of bulls would be spikes or forkies.
In conclusion, I've seen necklaces and/or chokers made with ivories. I was just wondering what everybody does with theirs. These are WAY too big for me to wear as a necklace or a choker on a daily basis, but I don't want to waste something God gave me the opportunity to experience.
Your comments/help are greatly appreciated.
Thx - Drew
