It was the year of the sattelite bull. Some friends and I killed 4 bulls in 4 days during the first rifle hunt in 6c in New Mexico. A bud from mississippi got a nice 6x4 opening morning, and another local friend got a 4x5. On the 3rd day, another college bud got a decent little 4x4. After 3 days of quartering and packing out meat, I was ready to get fill my tag. On the 4th day, a good friend and I were able to stalk a small herd for about an hour. It was a rough stalk in very thick, burned out timber, so we cow called once as to not totally spook the elk away. Finally, a decent 5x5 walked into a clearing a couple hundred yards away and he never took another step after 1 shot from my trusty .308.
It was a year to remember for us, especially for the out of staters, who both killed their first bulls. We hunted hard for 4 days on all public land without professional guides, just the know-how of myself and some great local friends. After this hunt, there was plenty of tasty table fare to go around.

Congrats to all of you guys , what a great hunt! Theres nothing wrong with any of them bulls , I'd shot any one of em, but you guys went 4 for 4 , thats awesome . As I looked over the pics all I could think was , WOW thats ALOT of work and mega lbs of meat!6C has no elk eh....lol, it'll be on my app once again in 07...Again congrats...

hey ya'll, thanks for all them good comments! yeah, the NMGF proc says 'scattered elk populations in 6c' but we saw elk, even bulls, every day. Every bull we got had an even bigger bull with it, just that none of us were able to get a shot on the big one.... they seemed to dissapear, leaving the little guys out hangin'. I guess they get big for a reason.

not county line, but we did check it out once. Saw lots of blaze orange there. these bulls were taken on the caballo peak area. normally i wouldn't say on the internet where the elk were taken, but not too many folks are gunna venture to caballo peak even if i said it was loaded with 390" bulls, which it could be. if you do go there, bring food, water, and pack mules or a posse of strong backs, and expect to be there a while.

Yeah I've now killed two elk in two years of going there and don't mind telling people where, most persons don't want to venture too far from their trucks any how. I laugh when we come across hunters who just can't find the elk, "WE'VE LOOKED EVERY WHERE, HERE AND THERE, THEY MUST ALL BE IN THE BACA'! LMAO...
