Just curious about any big bulls from elk area 1. Has anyone heard any reports about this area. Is access tough?

Haven't heard. A look at the map will confirm that access is tough, and I have heard that it is. Vehicle travel is very limited in that there are only a few access points, and the country is rugged and steep. The unit is also very small compared to others and has a bit of private land, so a guy would have to be carefull about where he was at. One main concern of course is that it would be difficult to get a bull out of the area.

Thanks for the response. I would imagine if you were able to get access somewhere you could find a big bull and then deal with the problem of getting it out. I was just wondering if trophy quality was similar to 2, 201.

This unit is defiantly not a good unit. 2 or 201 are way better, and continue to produce good bulls. There has been some 300-330 bulls taken but not much bigger. It is a small unit that has A BUNCH of private property on it that is extremely difficult to get access. It is about as hard to draw as 2 or 201, because they only give out a few tags. I think it took at least 10 points to draw this year. But then every unit in Colorado seems to be getting harder to draw.

I am constantly amazed how folks will believe information from anybody on a public web site, without even calling the local game warden.

Unit 1 was put into a landowner preference pilot last year. IMO, the pilot is BS for hunters and does nothing but provide a revenue subsidy to landowners. In exchange for the $$, $upposedly hunters get access. A quick call to the game warden would validate the access that was acquired by the pilot.

The unit borders, dinosaur monument, the same "park" that unit 2 & 10 border, not to mention the unit 201 border. In those units, the refuges along with the limited tags provide the basis for mature animals. Think the elk know, or care whether they are moving into 2, 10, 201 or 1? I doubt it.

Lastly - is it worth the points? I doubt it, but then again I don't think any unit is worth waiting over 10 years for.

Perhaps he did contact, or is planning to contact a DWM. I'm sure if a guy was to burn points like that on a unit such as this one, he'd have that call on his list of priorities. Likewise, I'm sure he knows to take info on a public site with a grain of salt.

Access is inherantly difficult it seems to me, considering the fact that the whole unit, save for the Utah side, is enclosed by the the river.

I'm with you Grasshopper, as far as the size of bulls, most any unit is not worth a ten year wait. What it boils down to when a guy as waited that long is the experience of hunting unpressured animals without seeing a sea of pumpkins and the chance at a quality animal.

Well Grasshopper all I can tell you about this unit is what my landowner friends have told me about (3 of the landowners). Hell they don't know what is going on in that unit I guess; they only get a tag for it every year.

Also my good friend had the tag 2 years ago and he shot a 300 bull (hunted his butt off), his brother in law buys a tag there every other year and he only kills 320 bulls and his company buys all the hunting rights to the private property up there.

And for your info the local game and fish guy doesn't know that much about the unit because he hardly ever gets up there. It takes him a day to drive around there it is just hard for him to get up there.

So I guess I don't know squat about that unit, before I post anything again I will get my facts strait. I knew all about the pilot program your not the only person that can read.

I believe the DWM in Rangely (Terry Wygant) had a bull tag for unit 1 this year. He might be able to give you some info about the unit.

>they only get a tag
>for it every year.

Whats wrong with that picture? Joe off the street gets a tage very ten years - your landowner buddies you claim get one every year!

his

Great - your buddies get a tag every plus they sell them to your other brother Daryl every year too!

I guess annual game counters on winter range and scientific analysis don't mean much to you?

You'll get your facts straight next time? Cool! I just wasn't sure after your post if your just trying to keep folks out of the application pool for the Daryl, Daryl & Daryl, your landowner buddies, or for Daryl your brother-inlaw's buddy with the deep pockets. At least we have that clear now, and now recognize you have a lot of buddies and your well liked.
