Alright, here is my situation...I will be moving out of the state of Utah, thus losing my residency in May. I will still be a resident when I put in for an elk hunt. I have 9 points and HAVE TO draw out for the best hunt I possibly can for elk. Which unit would you put in for with really good odds of drawing? I hunt with bow, ML, or rifle.

Thanks for the imput

JARED!!!

WHEN YOU MOVE OUT OF STATE DO THEY LET YOU KEEP YOUR POINTS???

THE ONLY bobcat WONDERING???

Any unit is good to kill a big bull anymore. Just look at the odds and play the game just like everyone else. Your best chance to draw is with a flipper but kill is down. Really consider a Muzzy tag. They are awsome. I killed a 401 bull with mine this year the first hour of light.

When you move out of the state you get to keep your points - but you will have to hunt as a non-resident - which is a little more pricey. If I were you, I would keep on accruing points until I can either afford to hunt as a non-res or I can hunt once again as a resident. Oh wait - that's EXACTLY what I'm doing. You don't HAVE to draw out.

Yes, they do let you keep your points but I would rather not pay the out of state prices; plus I hear it is going to be going up again this next year.

By the way, how do you know my name? We must know each other, huh?

I second the Muzz tag...

HE IS MAGIC!!!! DONT MESS WITH HIM OR YOU WILL END UP AS AN ATV!!

:( Somebody didn't like bouncing betty :(

I think the point you miss is that if you put in for the tag as a resident in may, you could be hunting as a non-resident in October. Double check your laws before you proceed.

Residency can be affected not only by the state you came from, but where you go.

I know your name too. It's Jared Hadlock, and I found it by clicking on the Profile icon at the top of your post. I am also accruing points as a former resident, and will be happy to pay for the tag if I ever draw one. Best state for elk, and great trophy potential. Scott

Well, I know you can click on the profile icon and see someones info, but I don't know why you would call someone by that name instead of their log in name. Just curious thats all.

Thanks for all the input so far...keep it coming.

I ran a quick report for Muzz units in Utah (as a Resident) where 9 points guaranteed you a tag this year (2006 draw). Here they are, Unit - Points need for a Guaranteed tag:

Cache, North 6
Cache, South 9
Central Mountains, Nebo 9
Fillmore, Oak Creek South 8
La Sal, La Sal Mountains 7
Nine Mile, Anthro 8
North Slope, Three Corners 9
Paunsaugunt 8
South Slope, Diamond Mountain 5

It's the beta version of my report, so hopefully I didn't miss any. :)

Book Cliffs, Little Creek (roadless) 10
Cache, Meadowville 10
Mt. Dutton 10
Wasatch Mountains 10

To me- 9 points is right on the line between great units and good ones. Again, these reports are just for Muzz only.

Like a couple of others have mentioned keep your points and apply for the zones that you have always been shooting for, residency will not change that. The tag cost is a small portion of the total cost of an elk hunt, gas, food, lodging, etc...

Good luck on your pending move.

Dan

I did email the DWR and found out that I can hunt as a resident even if I move away before the hunt starts; the only stipulation is that I cannot claim residency of any other state in the mean-time. Which is alright since it usually takes about 6 months to get residency in most states.

Looking at OddNut1's report. What happens to the odds if 50 people with 10 points now put in for these units? ALL applicants are assuming that they will draw a tag for sure. Something to think about as your playing the game.

Very good point- which is the main reason (IMO) people need to look at trends regarding applications. We see unit shifting all the time. Some premo units are pretty standard across the board, but that next step down can be a huge guessing game. For example, look at Mt. Dutton muzzleloader (Res) from the list above. In 2005, 171 apps and in 2006 131. 40 people is a huge deal, but more importantly, how many points those 40 people had is a bigger deal. Even though it went down 40 people, both years required 10 pts to pull a guaranteed tag. Overall your odds increased, but the min pts required stayed the same.

OddNUT I was wondering when you were going to put a taste of your information out here. I am here to tell you boys, this information is priceless. If you study these numbers, there shouldn't be any reason why you can't draw at least one tag a year somewhere. Be careful when you go to huntodds.com. It should have a warning label on it stating that it's ADDICTIVE!

It's always an adventure!!!

Oddnut, I second that. I am signed up for the Premium Service, which is great.
