$70,000 Elk tag success???

He passed several good bulls that 99% of the hunters I know would have taken and went home with tag soup and happy. He had some high standards he set for himself and never waivered thru some hard days in the field.

Successful or not, seventy thousand dollars for a tag!! I guess some people can afford this but I think that they are completely nuts. Seventy thousand dollars could make alot of diy hunts all over the country!!

Clyde

But if HE is happy with spending that kind of dough, why do you care? He didn't even hurt the elk population, in fact the $70,000 he spent will HELP the elk in that area more than your DYI hunt. He spent the same amount for a tag to hunt one unit as the governors tag the year before cost.

Mr Clyde, instead of calling the man nuts. I would like to commend this sportsmen for his sincere gesture. I understand that quite a few people are opposed to auction tags (I'm not sure you fall into this catagory I hope you don't) but they provide valuable dollars to be able to do more for habitat and the creatures we love to hunt. These dollars are very valuable and have enabled many states to improve hunting for everyone because of the generosity of a few. It taks a lot of tags to add up to the amount that one of these tags brings. Money that is needed by many states Game & Fish Department. I'm only sorry that there aren't more individuals out there with the personal conviction to act in the same manner this individual has chosen. He passed on his own opportunity at an Elk to create another for a fellow hunter we could sure use a lot more NUTS like that.

He could have spent $70,000 on a new Porsche or on a elk tag, as long as he is having fun who cares. Sounds like he had a good time and I hope his money goes toward something that will help the Wildlife.

" The more you spend now = the less money the government takes from you when you die. So have fun and buy what you want"

PLEASE DON'T TELL THE UDWR THE GUY DIDN'T HARVEST!!!

THEY'LL DAMN SURE HAVE TWO 70,000.00 PERMITS AVAILABLE NEXT YEAR!!!

THE ONLY bobcat GLAD TO AT LEAST KNOW THIS GUY WOULDN'T TAKE A DINK NO MATTER WHAT,THAT OUGHT TO PI$$ THE OPPORTUNISTS OFF!!!

I didn't mean for this to turn into an auction tag debate. I too had a San Juan tag and I too ended up eating tag soup. Hard days afield doesn't even do it justice. The weather was amazing. Far and away the best hunt I have ever been on and believe me, if I had and extra 70K lying around I would do it again in a heart beat, elk or no elk.

One of the pisscutters he passed was killed the next day and grossed over 400. That is some seriously high standards.

You guys are right, my bad!! Some people can give alot and some can't. I have nothing against people who have auctioned tags, I just could not afford something like that. So its hard for me to see someone spend that amount on a tag.

Clyde

Anybody that passes up a 400" bull is NUTS. Most people, me included, have never seen a 400 let alone have a chance to harvest one.

However, If he had a good hunt then that is all that matters.

He wanted a 400 for sure, not a he could be, the guides were not willing to say for sure it was a 400. It went 402 I believe. I am impressed someone can let a bull like that walk away on PUBLIC land. I could not do it.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-09-06 AT 06:40PM (MST)[p]Are you guys talking about the same tag. I know 1 of the rifle tags went for around $70,000. The archery tag went for around $32,000 (more than the other rifle tags). Any bowhunter who passes a bull anywhere close to 400" is foolish.

NOT IN UTAH THEY AIN'T FOOLISH,LOL!!!

AND THEN THERES isayNUNYA,I SAY F###YA!!!

DID YOU HEAR THAT wileywapati???

THERE ARE 400" CLASS BULLS BEING RELEASED!!!

THE ONLY bobcat BETTING MONEY THAT AGGITATES SOME OF THEM PISSCUTTIN BITTCHES!!!

wiley!!!

IN A ROUND-A-BOUT WAY!!!

YOU'VE BEEN TRYING TO TELL ME YOU'D BE HAPPY WITH A DINK BULL!!!

WHEN IN REALITY YOU WANT A TROPHY BULL!!!

ADMIT IT!!!

JUST LIKE THE REST OF US!!!

THE ONLY bobcat!!! :D :D :D

BESSY don't get me wrong, if I had a 300 bull and a 400 bull
come into a waterhole and both gave me the same shot opportunity don't think for a minute I wouldn't join you INCH FREAKS!!!

My point is PRO just told ya a guy passed up a 400 bull
on a premium unit. You apparently believe it, which brings me to my point, how much fricken better do these units need to get
before ya start putting out more tags??? PASSING UP 400 BULLS???

Thats worse than dying of old age, c'mon people what the hell do ya want when a bull that even looks like it may be 400 is passed up??

Obviously he wanted a 400" bull or nothing. What is wrong with that? He has that caliber of wallet and wants that caliber of bull, end of story. Like I said, no big deal you have dropped hamburgers on the floor before. Should they give out more tags because he passed that type of bull hell no! If you want to kill a 300" bull go to Colorado its not far from the SJ and you shouldn't have a problem finding one.

Robert, you play nice its not just your litter box.:)

ww!!!

I FIGURED THAT WOULD BOTHER YA!!!

A 400" BULL RELEASED!!!

NOT RELEASED UPON!!!

CAN YOU IMAGINE ww???

A 400" PISSCUTTER & HE AIN'T BIG ENOUGH!!!

THE ONLY bobcat KNOWING FOR A FACT THAT BOTHERS THE HELL OUT OF YOU,EASY BIG GUY!!!

He had an any-weapon tag not an archery tag. He said 400 or bust, and went home with tag not punched and HAPPY. I say good on him, thats $70,000 to put to wildlife that you and I do not have to, yet we benifit from it. And he left every animal he saw walk away breathing. How the hell do you critize that? The guy has taken several big bulls and wanted one in the next tier up, thats called selective hunting, which is NOT a bad thing.

This hunter passed alot of great bulls. Several were taken by other hunters including the 404 bull that was taken the following day. All $70,000.00 that he spent for the tag has been committed for habitat projects on the San Juan. Great guy and a great hunt.

T thats no lie on the duck fever
launched the boat and started breaking the ice
till I started having visions of TITANIC and turned that
thing around.

First day all year I've been skunked.

THE ONLY ww THAT WISHES HE HAD A SWAN TAG IN HIS POCKET TODAY

Gee, if I spent $70,000 on a tag and didn't take home my 400 plus incher I'd probably say I had a great hunt to. What else could you say. Get real - very few hunters have that kind of money to spend. Most are just happy to get drawn for a decent hunt and be able to take a respectable animal. People with that kind of money to spend are on the most part on an ego trip. Each next trophy has to be better than the last, so when will it end. They have to buy their hunt/animal. If it wasn't for their buying the tag, hunting on a late/rut hunt, having a guide to find the animal, etc., they probably wouldn't be able to harvest anything. I don't post much, but I do view the monster muley site just about every day and enjoy it - have learned a few things. Oh yea, I thought this site was monitored, seems that Bobcatbess has a real loose rein on his comments/posts. I'd like to see what he realy looks like, as when I first started viewing the site I thought he was a woman with that name.

wally!!!

MAYBE YOU OUGHT TO TOUGHEN UP OR COWBOY-UP!!!

IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH THEN MAYBE YOU OUGHT TO GO BACK TO WHEREVER YOU CAME FROM!!!

YOU MUST BE ANOTHER ONE OF THESE OPPORTUNISTS THAT THINK THE WHOLE WORLD OWES YOU A TROPHY ELK,THINK AGAIN!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING THE GUY DROPPED 70,000.00 INTO THE UNIT + OTHER MONEY,HE DIDN'T TAKE ONE DAMN THING FROM THE UNIT,I'D BET HE SAW SOME AWESOME BULLS SO QUIT YOUR BEACHING!!!

bobcat - sometimes i just don't get the message your trying to send. it seems like somebody is winding uou up to tight in the am. i didn't want to say this, but i'm from no. calif. handle the truth - what's the truth? the truth is these guys aren't going to go out and get their 400 incher doing what most guys do. i don't look up to them in any way. no i don't think i'm owed a trophy elk. i'll probably never see one, just happy to hunt and take one - like most hunters are.

Wally, Your passing judgement on someone and something you know nothing about. That speaks volumes for your character.
The genteleman who passed on the bull is entitled to do so with out your consent and worthless input. The truth is these auction tags dump thousands and thousands of dollars into habitat and conservation that otherwise would not be available. When they buy these tags it benefits wildlife, me and people from Ca. that don't have a clue what they are talking about.

Bob - Man you love to argue with people. IMO passing on a 400 bull is crazy but so is spending 70,000 dollars to do so. The guy must be related to our girlfirend BOBbess.

isay,
It would be nice to believe that the thousands and thousands of dollars did go back into the habit and conservation, but here in Utah, unfortunately a very small percentage gos back into the habit and conservation. The majority of the money seems to go into the pockets of the land owners or the sportsmans associations, which the wildlife board seems to favor these days (giving out the most auction tags than any other state)!

Anymore, the hunts have become a millionaire's sport... it use to be exotic animals (safari hunts), but in the last few years its ELK & DEER!

Peace, Spike Bull

90% of the money of these tags is required to go directly into habitat by LAW. The other 10% goes to the group that sells the tag for overhead and whatever they feel like spending it on. That is $63,000.00 on the ground from just this one tag. Spike Bull, go educate yourself on what these tags are about before spouting off.

Not against this guy at all for spending 70k. I'd spend that kind of money every year if I had it.However, Id agree that the guy is a fool for passing on a 400 inch bull unless he new for certain there was a bigger bull and he already had a 400 inch bull on the wall.

Mike

Naive, is all I can say if you actually believe politicians dont get some of that in their pockets or are able to divert it to other things.

Where does that 63k + all the other hunting fees go? I know some of it goes to the fish and game dept but to actually think 90% makes it there is a strech for me to believe.

I hope this guy also make generous contributions to other worthy causes this holiday season.

I also hope those kids at St Judes have a very Merry Christmas.

Im all for people enjoing themselves and not telling anyone what to do with their money. Im a hunter and have my lifetime sportsman permit in TN and believe in supporting wildlife managment, but 70k seems a bit much for a vanity/trophy hunt.

I personally think that much money could have been better spent/donated.

How long til only the 'well off' can hunt? How long til you and I are no longer part of the 'well off'?

"YOU MUST BE ANOTHER ONE OF THESE OPPORTUNISTS THAT THINK THE WHOLE WORLD OWES YOU A TROPHY ELK,THINK AGAIN!!!"

Now there is the pot callin the kettle cast iron!!!!

The only mule packer swearin off his ban of monster muley's to call out the real pisscutter bobcatbess.

Travis Sparks

proutdoors,

I too can talk with a pencil. You're one who believes whatever someone tells them, huh! I know how the law works as well, you probably think politicians are 100% truthful!

Why don't you go educate yourself on life before you even talk!!!

p.s.

I can spout off all I want... its my option.

isay,

I don't have a problem with wealthy individuals spending their money the way they want... but I do have a problem with sportsmans assoications and the wildlife boards turning what used to be hunting, now into what matters most "SIZE/SCORE"!

spikebull

The Conservation Permit program actually generated about $2.5 million this year, and with matching dollars, over $11.6 million went on the ground to fix 150,000 acres of public land, on almost every deer and elk unit in Utah, including the San Juan. So, the money is a catalyst to do much larger projects that benefits everyone who some day wants to hunt in Utah - residents and non residents alike.

How many other states can factually say, "in 2006 we put $11.6 million on the ground to make better habitat for deer, elk, bison, bighorn, and other wildlife species ? How many states can actually say $2 million from game and fish went on the ground ?

As far as the big hitters doing things for other people, some of these guys have helped raise another $110,000 to award ten dream hunts for heros - our fellow combat vets who served in Iraq. Two of these young men now have purple hearts, and stayed in the fight, as their buddies went home in a pine box.

One young soldiers who just got out of the worst of bagdahd, will be spending New Years sitting on a white sandy beach, with turquose blue waters of the Carribean with his young bride. The donors are completely anonomous. In ten minutes, SFW members donated $45,000 for a scholarship fund for two children whose father died in Iraq serving our country. so, lots and lots of great things are done, many never say a word.

I know it can be easy to be cynicle, but there are truly some wonerful people who do HUGE things every day for the average guy, and no body knows about it.

If the average guy would quite bitching about this, more people with means might step up.

Conversly, if i was king for the day, those with means who don't do good things with it would be taxed very highly, as there are some really selfish jerks with money as well.

Don peay

HEY ASSPACKER!!!

YOUR TALK IS BIG!!!

NOBODY OWES ME ANYTHING #####!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING THE OPPORTUNIST SHOULD OF KEPT HIS MOUTH SHUT!!!

Don,

I don't know you, but what kind of advise do you have for someone who is a soldier, who is bustin their a$$ off just to make rent, who does not have the money to buy a conservation tag, and not having much luck with the draw because they've been deployed TWICE... Lets say this soldier enjoys bowhunting, the elk bowhunt in Utah ends before the rut really gets good. The LE Rifle gets the prime of the rut (don't understand that, since a rifle can reach across canyons, how easy), but since you are a KING (SFW) maybe you can help... help get the bowhunt pushed back a week, so the LE rifle doesn't start until the last friday of september!

Spike bull,

first, if you are interested in attending the Jeff Foxworthy and Montgomery Gentry show, send me your adress if you would like a couple of complimentary tickets to the show, they love the soldiers and both have gone to iraq to entertain the troops. They are awesome entertainers as well.

My address is

Don Peay
4477 Sunset Circle
Bountiful, Utah 84010

Second, next year send me a paragraph and enter the hunts for heros round two, you might just get your dream hunt that way.

Third, we are trying to increase the elk herds from 60,000 to 80,000 to 85,000. with all the habitat investment, we should be able to have more elk and deer, as the land is going to be much more productive. More elk will mean more tags and keep the quality. We could use every sportsmen's help in this effort.

Finally, a lot could be done to move season dates to reduce the hunters sucess, but the thought on the limited tags is when you get the tag of a lifetime have a great hunt and get a great bull, not just hunt for one in tougher seasons.

And i guess last but not least, make some friends and go on the hunts with those who draw the tags.

I have only had one mature bull tag in my lifetime, but everyear some friend has a tag and i tag along to cook, spot, and of course pack em out.

Having lived in Utah when there were few elk, and no big bulls, i like the way it is now, versus the "good old days".

thanks for your service. It is a shame our soldiers barely scrape by, as i said, some of us have stepped up to make some dream hunts come true, it would be nice if more Americans would reach out and really do some significant things for all the troops.

don

Wow, First let me apologize... I didn't realize my thread sound as if I were the soldier, no I'm not the soldier, sorry. My very close friend is though, and yes he really has been deployed Twice, and yes he would really like to draw, as you you're self put it, "a tag of a lifetime", thus is why the archery hunters should hunt the "prime rut".

So you do admitt, that you support the LE rifle hunt being in the "prime rut", strictly for the success($$$$$) not for herd management!

No, I don't think for a minute that the large bull ratio is due to the "tag of a liftime" (limited entry), I believe its has been due to spike only units!

In closing, when I look back and hear about the "good old days", I don't recall hearing anyone complain not shooting a "400" bull or caring. All I've ever heard is what a great time they had with buddies, family etc., and ooohh this bull will taste great.

With all that I have said throughout this topic(thread), I hold no hard feelings or judgement towards anyone, and thanks to all the men and women fighting for my freedom (speech etc.), I wish them the very best during the holiday season, my prayers are with you and your families.

May all of you have a Merry Christmas!

Peace,
spikebull

First off It is funny you call me an opportunist as you have no idea about me.
However, I constantly here don't change no more tags so Bobcatbess can kill his big stinky bull. I see this as you feeling the world owes you a "Trophy Elk"
By the way It amazes me that someone with as much knowledge and character as you have would stoop to calling names.
Step back did you ever think I am funning with you as you do with others.

So for you:

The only "asspacker" tellin bobcatbess I will be in the Uintah basin during January, "Just how big a boy are you?"

Happy Holidays,
Travis Sparks

As for the rest of this thread. It is refreshing to hear of a money man, realizing killing a big stinky bull is not as important as hunting a big stinky bull. Although I believe money tags have got out of hand in Utah and quality should not be defined by a record book. I realize the money spent on habitat and wildlife from the fundraising is irreplacable.

spikebull,

If you are dead set to hunt the better rut dates in the LE's, put in for the any weapong tag and hunt with your bow.

spikebull, I will add that when you put in make sure you put in for a unit that has spike tags issued, since they are the reason for all the big bulls. I guess all the monsters on the Pahvant, San Juan, Dutton, Monroe, Southwest Desert, Book Cliffs are a result of spike tags as well, right?

spike bull,

These arguments about how good Utah elk are is getting old. If you want a good eater shoot a spike or cow EVERY year. 8 year old bulls are tough as boot leather.

Unfortunately, the way things are laid out, you will only get one or two chances at an LE bull. Make them count and enjoy it. It is better to draw once or twice and get a world class bull than once or twice and get something very average. Look at the draw odds in Arizona. They suck too! Look at Colorado elk. People want them bigger!

Find something positive and run with it dude....

ktc,

Getting old? I haven't said anything since you last replied! And pay attention... I did end positive with my last thread, you and prodonpeay started with the attitude again, and if your getting tired of the "good Utah elk" arguments... STAY OUT of the thread!

YOU JUST AIN'T FRICKEN LISTENING TO A F###ING WORD I'M SAYING!!!

WELL MAYBE YOUR NICKNAME I GAVE YOU!!!

NOBODY OWES ME ANYTHING,DO YOU FRICKEN UNDERSTAND???

I'VE GOT A FEW NAMES FOR A FEW OF YOU MM'ERS,NO OFFENSE!!!

WHAT THE HELL YOU GONNA DO IN THE BASIN???

DEER COUNTS???

ELK COUNTS???

WABBITT HUNTING???

J.D. MERCER ASKED ME THAT SAME QUESTION ONCE!!!

I'M ABOUT THE SAME SIZE I'VE ALWAYS BEEN!!!

SO LETS HERE YOUR "BITTCH" ON THE ELK HUNTING???

HOW MANY POINTS YOU GOT???

WHICH HUNTS DO YOU WANT TO SEE???

ETC???

THE ONLY bobcat WAITING FOR MulePackers NEXT RESPONSE,I'LL STRAIGHTEN UP A LITTLE & WON'T CALL YOU asspacker IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT!!!

Hats off to our service men and women. If they are ticked off about the hunts Id say they are really mad about the mercenery companies like Blackwater/Dynacorp being paid 3-4 times as much by our goverment to do the same job.

I think our service men should be allowed some type of special privledge if they are able to come back during hunting season.

Most are over there doing a job for under 30k a year while our goverment funds companies like Blackwater/Dynacorp well enuff to pay its mercaneries 100+k a year.

Our service guys should get something more to show our gratitude and I think a special hunt for them is a small price for all they do.

I've been accused of not listening before, however I usually figure I just hear something you don't believe you are saying. So I guess that means you don't understand your own ranting!!!

I also know there are a lot of MMer's that have a name(s) for you, unfortunately most should/can not be posted in a public forum.

Just passing through the basin, The only counting I will be doing in the basin is hits! I imagine I'll be able to do that 1st hit = smacking you! 2nd hit you smacking the floor!! Come to think of it you may qualify for the wabbitt hunting.

I have 13 points! My only "concern" with the elk hunting is that we are not using the resource to its full potential. One to one bull to cow ratios will be a course for catastrophe with in a dozen years. We are not using primitive weapons enough, we could increase revenue and tags by allowing more tags for these methods. We need to get the rifle hunt later in the rut so it is not quite as easy. Say an opener of September 28. Ths would still allow those who wish to hunt hard enough to kill the 375 plus bulls ample opportunity yet cut down on road and incidental kills of 375 bulls by the less committed hunters. It also allows the first estrus cycle to be complete and allow for a less interuppted rut where the superior gene bulls are more likely to service all cows, improving future generation of antler growers. Currently we kill most of the huge bulls within the first couple days of the rifle hunt in the peak of breeding. Does this make sense for the long run?

I have yet to decide what hunt I would like to see, last year it was a N Cache premium tag. This year I am leaning to a Bookcliffs roadless any weapon or an archery for one of the big three units. We'll see what I feel like next month.

Just a question how did Montana take 11 400 class bulls in 2006, kill a new world record with a bow and still allow the opportunity they do? Maybe Montana should be dubbed the "BEST ELK STATE"

Check your e-mail I know you like to look at big stinky bulls I will send you a couple of pictures. As for now I got my fix of venting and probably won't return. You see even an old dog learns new tricks. Don't say never, MM will eventually lure you back.

Travis Sparks

I applaud this guy for spending money to help a elk program because I could not contribute what he did in a lifetime. Just me but a 400 bull is nothing if you can literally buy one any time you want. Please don't say this guy has some crazy self control that no one else has. Give most serious hunters unlimited money to buy any animal they want and they will let a 400 bull go. (ok maybe after killing a 390 one they only paid 50k for) Personally these hunts are offensive to me but I am glad there are people willing to and able to spend the money they do. Like a prostitute they are offensive, but provided a needed service to some who can't find their own. Just call it what it is a bought and paid for animal. IMO
