wyoming unit question

General question for somebody willing. Im from montana and thinking about applying for a non-resident set aside elk tag in popular Unit 51. I see that most of 51 is wilderness and if i were lucky enough to draw i couldnt afford to hire those outfitters who are charging $7k. Im wondering if the unit 51 late tag is any good outside the wilderness.

Thanks.

It is not so good anymore now that wolves have taken over. Also outside of the wilderness there is quite a bit of private ground.

dont need a regular guide-just make a wyoming resident friend, take him with you, and tell him to get a non-commercial guides license(free from g&f). its a stupid rule, but that is one way around it.

Thanks for the useful help guys. Sam, i do have a good friend in gillette so maybe ill ask him before spending the money on applying. Even though unit 51 is like winning the lotto. It seems like there is area outside the wildnerness in unit 52, i may try that. Let me know if there is anything i can tell you about MT's system in return.

51 late is a great tag. Take a look at the resident draw odds and compare them to the other area's up there. I know of a 380 plus net that came out of there in 05 during the late season. It was shot a mile from the trailhead. Any of the Sunlight area's late season have potential to take a Booner with Yellowstone just a stones throw away. If yer feeling lucky, buy a couple of lotto tickets while yer at it...
