Easiest Elk Hunt-Idaho Palisades 64/67

Here's a spot for those of you who are just starting out. The Palisades unit in Idaho is a sleeper and probably the easiest country you will ever hunt elk in. Check out the area in North Pine Creek off of Hwy 31. Camp there and hunt the area up to Liar's Peak. The secret is to not go too far in. A lot of people go back in three or four miles, which only pushes the elk towards the highway. We have hunted this area for five years and have shot 10 bulls for 13 hunters, 3 of which were in the 300 class. Most of our bulls have been shot within 1/2 mile of hwy 31. Now, don't expect to see a lot of elk, just enough to keep you interested and fill your tags. They are still elk and need to be hunted properly. So, why tell others about a spot like this? Well, we've moved out of state and are getting back into archery hunting for BIG bulls. Besides, someone has to give the new guys a little help or they will get discouraged and quit. Good Luck!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-13-06 AT 11:30PM (MST)[p]Hey Patxarano,
I've hunted elk in AZ unit 1(in 06) & as you mentioned, it was my easiest bull. Easiest, except for the tag!

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about...unit 1 in Arizona was one of the hardest hunts I have ever been on...it was hard to pass up bull after bull, and it was hard to leave! Other than that it was pretty easy though... :)

Do you guys have pictures of your unit 1 bulls? I'd love to see them.

Corey

COME ONE COME ALL!! TO IDAHO WE HAVE THE BEST ELK HUNTING IN THE WORLD ! EASY, FAST, AFFORDABLE AND TONS OF ELK IN NORTH PINE CREEK. YOUR SMART ARENT YA! OR MAYBE YOUR CAMPED AT PINEY PEAK AND WANT ALL THE RETARDS YOU THINK YOUR RECRUTING TO PUSH SOMETHING TO YOU. EITHER WAY GOOD POST DA.

this would be the first time on this site i've seen a thread like this.
thanks i really appreciate it, i am looking into hunting idaho next year.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-06 AT 03:47PM (MST)[p]It's so easy that in 2005 the archery tag ran 9% success for bulls, with people hunting an average of over 7 days. Not to mention the any weapon tag, where hunters averaged 15% success for bulls, while spending over 4 days hunting.

Sign me up for next year! With those staggering numbers it's amazing that everyone doesn't hunt units 64/67.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-06 AT 08:36PM (MST)[p]WHAT THE HE11!!!!!!

missalot,
If you truly want to help a newbe out then why not tell or show someone personaly instead of telling the whole world your quote unquote secret? I can't help but wonder if you hunt another area that is overran with out of staters and hope to draw them to area 64/67? North Pine creek is a 40 minute drive from my home here in Idaho Falls and I can promise you and everyone else reading this that it is no secret at all. Just about everyone who lives in Idaho Falls long enough has hunted there at least once. I don't hunt there for elk either but I do know a few hunters that do and the hunting is infact some of the hardest elk hunting and rough county in the state. True fact and the stats prove it. I have hunted there for deer recently and being quite honest I wouldn't recomend it (deer or elk) to anyone. I saw more bear(some grizly)and wolf sign than I saw anything else. NO JOKE! Yes I admit I saw a few elk, make that very few elk, and even fewer deer than that. One point I want to bring up, is that in todays world of information and technology, the word gets out fast when something is realy good no matter how hard people try to keep it quiet. So if it was such a hot spot for elk then it would truly be known to everyone. Plus I don't think you would be looking to hunt elseware. Just my 2 cents.

BUGLELK,

Hey Corey, when your a four time world Champ elk caller, almost any elk hunt is easy! lol, Heck most of the elk stil run away from me because I only took 10th in the world last year. In fact I am sure I could hear some of them say, MAKE THE TOP 5 THEN MAYBE WILL LISTEN!!!! lol (big grin) just playing with you bud, I look foward to seeing and learning from you again in Reno! Hope you and your family have a good christmas, if you get the chance, tell you dad and Steve Cordel hi for me and wish them a merry christmas too. Take care Jason

Well Missalot you really are missing a lot. Give everyone the exact location of where you are going to hunt in the future and the results. Remember to be very detailed. You will be a real man if you give all your future plans out.

Well, reading these responses are quite interesting. Without wasting the time to reply to some of the lamer responses, I will say that first of all, I never stated that it was the best nor the easiest hunt in the country. Yet, it is a very good place to get started with an over the counter tag. Second, A LOT of guys go past our camp on their way in to hunt elk and they all admire the elk hanging on the meat pole when they come out, yet they never figured out where we hunt (90% of the game is taken by 10% of the hunters). I can't tell you how many guys from Idaho Falls roll into Pine Creek on opening day and charge up every hill looking for an "easy" elk. Then get into the truck and head to the next canyon. How many elk did they charge past in doing so? Just because someone has been there that doesn't mean that they have "hunted" it. Also, If this area "sucks" as everyone seems to think, then why does it matter if I tell others about our personal success? Maybe, the best point of this post for a new guy to learn is the need to look beyond what everyone else says is bad. The reality is that most game is taken by going where others don't go or by doing what other's don't do. This may be going ten miles from a road or 1/10 a mile from the road. All I know is that if I had to get an elk, hunting as we hunt it, this is where I would go. Yes, a lot of people will read this, just as they do all the where-to-go articles in Outdoor Life. Some will go here and see nothing and say it stinks. But, someone might actually go there and see a bull, even if they don't kill it and get hooked and become a hunter for life (which is something we need more of). The reality is that most of you choose to horde what little knowledge you have, I choose to share regardless of what anyone thinks. And yes, many times I have taken a new hunter into one of my spots to teach them how to do it (I did so on three of my hunts last year). I also, have spots that I will never share and will take to my grave. It is because so many people already know about and hunt this area that I would share it. Perhaps, some of them might appreciate finding out what they have been doing wrong all of these years. Lastly, it might be worthwhile for those who replied to this to read what they wrote and think about the message their responses say about themselves. No one on this site is the "World's Greatest Hunter" (regardless of what they think)and everyone of us could stand to get a little better, if it was only in the area of promoting our sport. No matter how many animals one has taken or how big they are, there is someone out there who has done better.

Wow gonna have to second( or third or 14th) what everyone else said. Just not a classy move. One for the rest of the people who hunt there, bc it is not solely your secret spot. Two for the animals, show them some respect and not blab to everyone in the world where they're at so that next season every yahoo can go up there and take a crack at em. Posts like this are what ruin quality hunting areas. You find a good spot, you don't tell anybody. You need a buddy or two to hunt with? Take them to your spot and tell them to keep their mouth shut. We (my family and I) never tell anyone where we hunt. Plain and simple there is already enough pressure in the hills and you don't need anyone else in your area putting pressure on the animals. You want quality bucks, bulls; you have to minimize the pressure.

still makes no sense to me. Let them charge by and end up somewhere else. That makes for less humans in the area you are hunting. anyway i don't even think your from Idaho. no idiot would give away a great spot (wheter it is or not) on the world wide hunting web. so if you do hunt there and are from idaho you are an idiot. Have fun in the seasons to come missalot. You and all your new friends can hunt by the highway in your big not so seceret spot.

Bigole5

Ok, Bigole5- I'm busted! Actually, I don't hunt there and just made all of this up to prove a point to my buddies about the mentality of the guys on this website. And I'm not from Idaho either. I'm from a part of the U.S. where the right to free speech exists without having to be called an idiot because someone disagrees with your opinion. Whatever, just realize that this wasn't posted for the benefit of those of you who have nothing better to do than belittle someone else, they already know all there is to know. As many laughs as we've had over the responses, you all can look forward to the disclosure of more 'hotspots'. Maybe I'll eventually list one of yours and really tick you all off!

You can list as many as you want jack A! everyone knows that if your dumb enough to spell it out it must not be all that. so go ahead let it roll. i've got my pad and paper out and ready.

Missalot, I for one would like to thank you for the information. I am from out of state and do not have a chance to scout areas like the locals so to have information as you provided is quite helpful. I have always wanted to hunt Idaho but never knew a decent location. I know it would be a gamble to come all the way to Idaho based upon your statement but just the idea of you volunteering is very nice of you. Thanks.

Missalot, wow never knew a guy could catch so much hell over a simple informative post. I guess you should have said something like, "keep the wind in your face, don't over call, and think like an elk." Actually telling someone an area to try is just too much for some of these guy's.

You sir are a horrible person and a discredit to sportsmen everywhere.

WHATEVER!

Keep your chin up man.

Did he just expose a top secret elk hunting spot? Who gives a rat's azz. You want two of the easiest places in Wyoming to shoot an elk, try 100 or 31. Hopefully the elk police don't arrest us...

You post a hunting spot and everyone get up in arms about it,How many hunters do you think thought this post is real or some-one pulling your chain, Everytime a outdoor magazine puts out a story on a great area it gets hammered, same way about some of the Big Game newletters, BUT A post on the internet anyone who put in for a tag in area that they don't research is asking for what they get, Now you posting that this area has some elk in and he shouldn't have posted the area just gave this post alot more get and go, so in fact you have help him give this area alot more hunters next year so pat yourself on the back. PS don't ask me where I hunt I can't remeber.

No one asked him. If it's not your area who cares. Just because it wasn't in a PM doesn't mean that alot of peoples spots are revealed around here. Give the guy a break.

Obviously hunting season is over, everybody is GROUCHY!

missalot,

The fact that you would post something to prove a point to your buddies speaks volumes about your character. This site is supposed to be for benefit, but with the anonymity the internet offers, people like you can do stupid and disrespectful things. I'm not going to call you an idiot or anything like the others on here because you and everyone who reads this post already knows what you are...

IF YOUR GOING TO BE A BEAR BE A GRIZZLY BEAR!It's just like fishing. You catch a big fish everybody wants to know what part of the lake did he come out of. I always tell them. Hell I got the fish he isn't in the lake anymore dummy!

Haha - I wholeheartedly agree with your nomination of unit 1. Dam, there was a bugling bull walking right into our camp as I cleaned my 336" bull on the tailgate. The way I describe it is a blind man can sling an arrow into the sky and have a pretty good chance of killing a 300"+ bull. Good handicap hunt.

Thanks for the info Missalot. I probably won't hunt there, but appreciate what little info you did give. There are lots of cranky people here on this site that get there panties in a bunch over the most trivial things. I come to this site to get information, see others success, read their stories. If we don't share info with fellow hunters then why do we p.m. each other with hunt info? You did nothing wrong, just keep your info general.
