Why Muleys SUCK!

I am so sick and tired of people on this site going on at nausium about how smart and difficult to hunt trophy muleys are!
The reason there aren't many around is because they are so stupid that they always look back at you to give you a second (or more!) shot at them and they never get old enough to get big antlers!
It takes wayyyyy more skill to hunt ole' whitey!!
You must learn his ways and habits to a much higher degree to be consistantly successful on TROPHY bucks.
Muley hunting is mostly just a bunch of glassing ,then just a stalk in for the kill!
You just don't have to interact with the animal the way you have to with a whitetail buck,no rattling,no scent signing,no grunting. Really not much more than a hike in the mountain and lucking into a buck and killing him.
Those of you that have hunted other more difficult animals would have to agree, right?

Harry,
You must not be a varry ggod hunter if you could not kill a big old dumb muley in oregon this year. Or are you just trying to start some b.s. here?
See ya,
Jay

What about Pacific Northwest blacktails?
What about the fact that you can stop a whitetail buck in his tracks with just a whistle? What about the fact that you can pattern a whitetail buck easier than any other? What about the fact that you can scent up a buck and call him in when you cant as easily do it with a blacktail or mulie? I am looking at this from a bowhunters perspective. Out of the 3 (blackies, whities and mulies) I would say that a whitetail is far and above, the easiest to get close to. For example, I have 4 P&Y whities but have yet been able to get any where close enough to stick a decent mulie buck.
I think that a lot of it depends on the type of terrain and the time of year.
I usually agree with what you have to say, but, I have to dissagree with you on whities being the hardest to hunt.

You obviously dont have a clue to whom you are talking about. I would be willing to bet that H-H has taken more good trophys than most of the folks on this site, including yourself!

This is the most ignorant post I've ever heard. Ask Chuck Adams dubbed "Best bow hunter in North America" what he has to say. He has mentioned in several publications that trophy muley's are the most difficult big game animal he has ever hunted with a bow.

I dont know....i think HH might have a point here!! :)

Good to see someone trying to liven things up around here!!

NO ONE ANSWER BEYOND THIS

The guy is just trying to stir the pot up....

Be nice to see if this post message is the last one put up on this guy.

RE: NO ONE ANSWER BEYOND THIS

these arguement threads crack me up. a wise man once told me that arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics-even if you win, you're still retarded.

THIS TOPIC HAS BEEN POSTED BEFORE, MAYBE ON A MORE SERIOUS NOTE. BUT I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO THROW MY 2 CENTS IN JUST BECAUSE. I LIVE IN OHIO AND HAVE HUNTED WHITEY ALL MY LIFE. WHEN I TURNED 20 I GOT THE CHANCE TO GO TO WYOMING TO HUNT MULLIES. I'VE BEEN HUNTING THEM OUT THERE FOR THE LAST 7 YEARS. I LOVE TO HUNT AND EAT THEM BOTH. I WILL SAY THE MULLIES TASTE BETTER THOUGH! BUT, FROM MY EXPIRENCE I DON'T THINK IT'S SO MUCH THE SPECIES, BUT THE DEER THEMSELVES. DEER THAT RECIEVE EXTREME AMOUNTS OF PRESSURE ARE GOING TO BE HARDER TO HUNT. THE PAST YEAR WHEN WE FIRST ARIVED IN WYOMING THERE WERE SEVERAL NICE BUCKS, RANGING FROM 24"-30" FEEDING IN AN ALFALFA FIELD EVERYNIGHT. THE MORE AND MORE ATTENTION THOSE DEER GOT FROM PEOPLE GLASSING THEM FROM THE ROAD AND SEEING DIFFERENT VEHICALS THE LESS THEY SHOWED THEM SELVES. BY THE FIRST DAY OF SEASON, THEY WERE GONE. HERE IN OHIO IT'S NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND "UN-PRESSURED" WHITEYS. SO, YOU HAVE TO RELY ON CERTAIN TACTICS, TIME OF YEAR, AND REALLY SCOUT YOUR BUTT OFF TO BE ABLE TO PUT YOUR SELF IN A POSITION TO HARVEST A GOOD BUCK. WITH THE MULLIES, I DON'T SEE MUCH DIFFERENCE. ONE THING I KNOW MAKES A MULLIE "EAISIER" IN MY EYES IN JUST THE USE OF A RIFLE. I MAINLY BOW HUNT, BUT HERE IN OHIO ONLY SHOTGUNS ARE ALLOWED FOR GUN SEASON. THAT SAVES MORE DEER, AND BIG BUCKS THAN MOST PEOPLE REALIZE. BUT, IT'S NOT FAIR TO SAY ONE IS HARDER THAN THE OTHER.

ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS PUT A WHITEY OUT IN THE HIGH ALPINE COUNTRY IN THE WEST AND SEE HOW LONG HE LASTS. ITS A LOT DIFFERENT WHEN YOU CAN BOUNCE 5 FEET INTO THE THICK CRAP AND DISAPEAR!

HH,

You should go post this on RealTree... The guys over there are actually ignorant enough, that they'd believe you, 100%...

I actually had to watch Jackie Bushwacker, the other day. He had a mulie hunt w/ the Oh so great a wonderful "USO", in Kansas...

The first buck they get into. "Jackie readies himself, as the big mule deer buck bounds out of the weeds, because they always stop and look back".

What happened. He high tailed it to the next county!!!LOL.

People have NO idea, what it takes to consistently kill good mule deer bucks...

I've hunted whity's, enough to know... That they are not, very damn smart. In fact, I would have to say, they fit the meaning of stupid!!!

OSOK, I saw the samething and LMAO!!!!!!!. Then he just sits on his collective "whitetail" arse and lets the guide "drive" the same two bucks back to him!!!. I don't think Bushman or Jordan can walk to far from their four wheelers or treesatands...It's discracefull....

Going to have to agree with EASTERN_MULE on this one. I think deer subjected to pressure are the smart ones. Weather it is mule or whitey seems to be irrelevant. I've had both species make an arse otta me more than once, although my wife would say thats not to tough. LOL

LAST EDITED ON Dec-23-03 AT 09:12AM (MST)[p]HunterHarry.........

I gotta think this is almost a joke post for someone who has 750 posts on the forum you must have SOME interest in this pitifully stupid creature.....

KEY WORD (that you used); TROPHY MULEYS (vs. 2 year olds). Are muleys smart? I believe that IF they can get past a couple years, their smarts help them to become wise. I also don't think and haven't seen any evidence that Whiteys have this same uncanny ability to think through a situation and choose their best method to deal with it. How many times have you seen or heard of someone seeing a muley buck nestle down and hide completely from a hunter (vs. bolting like a scared rabbit as do those Einstein Whiteys). Or do the sneak away walk they do (trying to be as quiet as possible when exiting)? Speaking of that.......would you think a jackrabbit is smarter than a muley because he immediately hauls butt when he sees danger? Nope, that's called being a scared, panicked critter. Panic is not what an intelligent critter or human uses as their defense.

I think that part of being "smart" is that someone/thing has evaluated a situation, weighed their options and makes a decision (a buck stopping to evaluate the danger perhaps before deciding which escape route to take, sneaking around, bedding down waiting for the danger to pass, etc.) vs. reacting instantly and panicking as Whiteys do.

To each his own but I've got a tremendous amount of respect for Muleys and their ability to avoid danger in a variety of ways. If I just wanted venison I'd go hide in a blind and shoot a whitey. Merry Christmas, BTW........

ANTLERPINNACLE,

The whiteys are already there, if you havent noticed they are slowly taking the west over and are doing so quite prolifically. Some say that they will eventually push the muley out of thier habitat. I've personally seen them at 10,000 feet as I sure many others on here have as well. Not all whiteys live in "the thick crap" like they do in the east. From Nebraska all the way up throughout southern Canada they are a plains animal and have to survive with little to no cover.

"You must learn his ways and habits to a much higher degree"????? You must be talking about that habit they all have to come into a feeder when the bell goes off.

Almost 20 years ago I can remeber glassin' big trophy whitetail bucks right along side of big trophy mule deer bucks in the alpine of the Kootenays and Okanagan. Not many people hunt them up in the highcountry but they are there.

I THINK YOU CAN TAKE A WHITEY OR A MULEY STICK THEM BOTH UP IN THE HIGH OPEN COUTRY AND GET THE SAME EFFECT. EITHER THEY GET BLASTED OR THEY LEARN WHAT TO DO , IT DOESN'T TAKE ANY BRAINS TO FLAG YOUR TAIL AND JUMP IN THE THICK CRAP BUT IT DOES TAKE A HOLE LOT OF SMARTS TO SNEAK THROUGH OPEN BASINS WHERE YOU CAN GET WAISTED AT 500YRDS. I THINK THIS POST SHOULD READ NOT WHY MULEYS SUCK BUT CORN FEEDING 4 WHEELER RIDING FAT NON HIKING SIT IN YOUR STAND ALL DAY BUBBAS SUCK! YOU TAKE MOST OF THE GUYS BACK EAST BRING THEM OUT WEST WHERE THEY HAVE TO WALK MILES AND CLIMB HUNDREDS EVEN THOUSANDS OF VERTICAL FEET TO HUNT AND IT KILLS THEM. NOTHING LIKE GOING OUT YOUR BACK DOOR RIDING YOUR WHEELER ACROSS YOUR LAND CLIMBING 15 FT INTO YOUR STAND AND SITTING UNTIL MR BUCK WALKS BY, PIECE OF CAKE .NOBODY CAN ARGUE THAT!!! THE ONLY SKILL THAT I CAN SEE IN HUNTING TRADITIONAL WHITETAIL LAND IS KNOWING HOW TO CONTROL YOUR SCENT THE REST IS A WAITING GAME! OH YEAH I ALMOST FORGOT THE BIGGEST SKILL OF THEM ALL KNOWING WHAT TIME YOUR FEEDER GOES OFF>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

AP,

Dude... You need to go check out Real Tree, and let em know what we all think about em'!!!... I already did. And they don't think too highly of me...LMAO

Hey guys i think HH has a point. Only 16 and ive hunted white tail deer for 4 years and mule deer for 4 years with the bow and rifle and i can even tell the difference betwen the smarts of the two animals. Ive rattled in mule deer while they were looking right at me and they still came in. But i tried the same thing with a big knarly white tail and he turned and his flag was waveing bye. I think that mule deer can be harded to hunt as well because of the type of terrain that they are in compared to white tail deer. Just my thoughts though.

GET OFF YOUR SOAP BOX AND LEAVE THE ONLY REAL HUNTIN TO THE REAL HUNTERS(MULEY HUNTERS)!!!!! KNOW IT ALL....

OSOK, I just got back from realtree and I was lmao!!!. You and deerking got them pretty stirred up over there....I love the pictures you posted of the country you hunt in right after that fella was telling us how tough some of the mining country is to hunt...LOL!!!. I bet his jaw hit his keyboard when he saw those pic's.....

I think that the only true whitetail that is hard to hunt is the coues deer. Other than that my experience with whitetails has been very easy. I sat in a stand and about 1 hour later the buck was on the ground. He was not the biggest in the world but he did score 154, measured by a pope and young official measurer who is a good friend of mine. Muleys are very hard to hunt and the place I hunt only gets pressure from our hunting party once a year. We are lucky to take a nice respectable muley, and we have come home empty handed before. Well my brother in laws have, but I have killed decent bucks for the past four years. Lucky me!!!!!

Merry Christmas to all, and to all good hunting!

LOL!! your a funny one. a whitetales are no challenge they use the same trails everyday, They are easy to pattern. A mule deer is a lot harder to pattern they hardly ever use the same trails. They are harder to hunt because of the country they live in. Whitetails live most of there life within a mile radius. Mule deer are harder to predict one day they could be on one ridge the next day there on a diffrent mountain. you are a fool if you think mule deer hunting is easy.

Hunting public land eastern wild turkeys is more difficult than any type of deer.

OSOK
The big white tail deer that i rattled in was in the rut it was the last week in November. And the mule deer was the third week in november. The only time i try rattling is during the ruts so. I had so other luck during other times but not to the extent as in the rut.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-23-03 AT 03:05PM (MST)[p]That's cool.

Point being. Neither species are very smart when there's a lil poo', in the air...

And to further that point, neither species gets freaky HUGE by being dumb. You can pop 4 pt 130 class whitetails all day long every year and you can take 4 pt muleys in the 150 class each year from the seat of the truck. You want wall hangers in either species you had better be up to the challenge physically, mentally and financially.

I agree... I just don't think I can handle the mental anguish of sitting over a feeder fore day's upon day's at a time, to get the job done. Especially, when you know what the end result is going to be... Not much excitement, in the dawg deer fore me...

Now if it was a dawg deer daddy, like that Kansas buckee!!! My patience could dealt w/...LOL

geez Harry, look what you started..i think you're either out fishin', or sittin' back and laughing your a$$ off, and waitin' for the right moment to step back in...we know you better than that!! merry xmas

Youre officially invited to go whitey hunting in ND with me sometime OSOK. I garundamntee you wont be in no tree stand and that at the end of each day youll be glad for the lazy boy and a cold brew.

Mike

Boy!!! It sure takes alot of skill to kill a whitetail over a food plot or one of those great REDNECK inventions the electronic feeder... I also had a question for all of the whitetail hunters why are you so fat? I quess it's from setting in your tree lounge all day!!!!!!!!! Get off your ass and hunt!!!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-23-03 AT 06:19PM (MST)[p] *******************MERRY******CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*********
You guys know me wayyyyyy too well to know that was a serious post!

Yesterday I had come home from a hellish day at work, poured myself a BIG eggnog and brandy, logged on and saw BUCKSPY,Manny, and a number of other guys b!tchin' about how dull this place had been,so I went back to the kindling of all raging fires here, the ole "Whitey vs Muley" debate!
I think a lot of you guys were too smart to respond!!
Anyway, MERRY CHRISTMAS,have a safe and successful New Year!

Just thought I'd chime in with my $0.02. Just an example of how smart mulies are. My dad related a hunting story to me a number of years ago, of a particular hunt. He was hunting with his parents and brothers. On this particular morning they spotted a nice buck across the canyon from them. They watched it bed down in a clump of brush, so they proceeded to send 3 guys around and left a 2 people to watch. The 3 guys pushed there way through the brush. No buck to be found. The people watching said the buck never left the brush. It simply put it's head down on the ground and lay still. The other 3 hunters walk right past it. The 3 hunter came back around to meet up with the other 2. After the 3 hunters left the area the buck stood up and simply trotted down the canyon. Pretty amazing! I've heard several other similar stories over the years.

Every one knows the 'Hardest Animal" to hunt
is the Elusive, Cooler stealing, Fawn eating " Girl Ape " of the Oregon Forests ! ;-) LMAO
Merry Christmas to you all !
Later.

H-H, Merry Christmas and to the rest of the board also. Some took the bait, but most just spit it out...LOL

ill tell ya what, yall come out her to az, not mexico and do a "do it yourslef" hunt for a record book coues ad then ya'll will see that muleys are stupid compared to coues and easterns are just plain big fat and dumb. i challenege all of you to do this and hell i will even be there and walk as far as youare willing. as to the reply to the muley deer laying down to hide instead of bolting, i once saw a doe and a fawn lay down behind a small, small bush and they layed down right on top of each other to hide from us hunters. anyone up for the challenge?
casey

NOT ONLY AM I UP FOR THE CHALLENGE BUT I'M OFFERING YOU TO COME UP HERE FIRST AND I WANT TO SEE HOW MANY 40" (SPREAD) MULEYS YOU CAN SHOW ME IN A WEEK!!!

I'VE ALREADY SHOT A COUES,I JUST DIDN'T THINK HE WAS THAT BIG!!!

THE GREY GHOST (40" MULEY) WILL KICK YOUR REAR NEARLY EVERY TIME!!!

NOT REALLY CALLING A COUES STUPID,JUST KNOW THAT A 40" MULEY IS BY FAR THE SMARTEST!!!

THE ONLY bobcat LOOKING FOR A NICE 'RACK'!!!

can't you see people? Hunter harry was just trying to stir the pot and boy did he ever. he got all you riled up about nothing.
each species of deer is difficult to hunt, be it with bow or rifle. east or west, north or south. I happen to live in Alabama where there is a 79 day season for whitetails and in most counties you can take a doe AND a buck everyday. Most people hunt all season long and only take a couple deer. Yes, it is very difficult to harvest a monster whitetail in our state. But it is also difficult to harvest an ALberta whitetail,
or a Western Monster muley, blacktail or coues deer. Its all in the hunt, right? By the time any of these animals reach an age of about 5, they are so smart the average hunter doesn't stand a chance, regardless or location or species.

One could post....why whitetails suck.....its because they are so hard to hunt. The big ones....

Its funny to see that 40 plus of you get so wrapped up in arguing about something so simple. JUST GO HUNT and don't worry about what the next guy thinks.

Too many of you (not ME) are worried about a sheep slam or a Booner animal. pope and young....I love to hunt and each time I try to get the biggest animal I can, especially when its a paid/guided hunt that costs thousands, but for me to say I am disappointed with a lesser animal than a BOOK animal is incorrect. Regardless of a rack size, horn curl, weight or length, any animal I harvest is a true trophy. Get back to the basics......... hunt hard and enjoy your friends. If a booner animal is taken, Great, but lets not eat breathe and sh--. if it happens or doesn't.

Adios,
Denali

Those that really know me, know that I find something to love about ALL native big game animals!
There is something special about taking ANY trophy sized animal of any species......I love 'em all! I don't really see a reason to argue about any of them as long as you are hunting!!!!!
