I am looking to archery elk hunt Oregon. Is it a draw state for archery non-resident or can you buy them OTC? I am after Rocky Mountain elk not Roosevelt. Also, is the Klamath Falls area worth looking into as far as good numbers of elk?

It's always an adventure!!!

Allmost all of eastern oregon archery hunting for elk is open to OTC sales. There is a few units in the far northeastern part of the state that are controlled draw tags. I am from Klamath Fall myself, and there are a few elk around here, however this is deffently not noted for elk. Unless you are very familiar with the land and put alot of time in scouting the elk around here are hard to locate. If I was to hunt rocky mountain elk in Oregon I would focus hunting around the John Day and around LaGrande.

If you go to the John Day area be forewarned, it's thick with Californians. Not complaining, just stating a fact! Used to be an awesome area to hunt, but now there's hunter's blasting their Primos bugle off every ridge day AND night. The bull's are very call shy!

Good luck!

I live in paisley it is near KFALLS and like mentioned above there are a minimal number of elk around the area. Takes Great amounts of time scouting and A LOT of luck!! But i would focus around John Day as well... More elk forsure

Just curious but why would you want to come to Oregon to hunt elk? I'm from Oregon but if I had my choice of places to go, Oregon would be last. Sure the tags are over the counter and that's one of the reasons our state has such poor hunting. There are a few draw units for Archery but don't expect to draw them real soon. Northeastern Oregon has become a zoo partially because it's one of the last places that people can buy an OTC tag and hunt for a whole month. There are a ton of people from Washington and California, not saying they don't have a right to hunt here or anything but the number of people have hurt the hunting here. Like Treekiller said everyone is blowing on a bugle here. People watch a Primos movie and think they can just call in a bull with their bugle. I have just learned to leave my calls at home. Last year I hunted for 7 days and saw quite a few elk, almost everyday but not once did I ever hear a cow call or a bugle. The elk here have learned and they just don't talk much. As far as K-falls goes, don't even go there. I went to school down there and it isn't even worth anyones time to try and hunt elk there.

I agree leave the calls at home bring a cow call though. It be my last choice to hunt if I had to pay nonres $$$. Be sneeky use hunters that are call to your advantage because the elk will move away from them 9 times out of 10. Good luck it is some tough hunting if you don't know where the elk are at.

OregonBowHunter - I am interested in Oregon because I have shot a bull with my bow in just about every other western state. I love the Oregon area and I would like to try my luck in your beautiful state. I usually do these elk hunts solo so I won't be bringing a ton of hunters into your state.

Thanks for the reply guys. I appreciate the general area info very much. Come hunt Utah if you get a chance and I will return the favor.

It's always an adventure!!!
