Looks like a cactus-buck/stag to me. But thats just my opinion.
I could be wrong. Interesting deer.

Interesting deer is right. Does look a little like a Cactus buck but a HELL OF A BUCK none the less. Hopefully we'll see more pics of this buck in the future.

Now that is one ugly 280" deer. Am I jealous, no, I'd definately love to shoot him. But that deer in no way compares with the likes of a true hard horned pig. I am a touch disappointed after all the hype. Buckspy said it best, Very Interesting. Hope to see more photos of better quality. Congrats to the hunter also.

That is an ugly damn deer! none the less it is still a monster. that thing has only got to be like 18" tall. Congrats to the hunter.

Its hard to tell by the pic, but it looks like some of the antlers have got some velvet on them.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-30-03 AT 01:52PM (MST)[p]Damn, I'm a little disappointed, that is a cactus buck and they just don't do much for me. Cactus bucks and Pee Wee Herman are in the same category. (but yes, I would have knocked you down to get first shot))

I love the deer. Mass, trash and character. Those are the three things I like and he has plenty of each. But it is the hunter and his attire and expression that get me. I'd have a big time grin and would not take the picture on top of my suitcase. But there's got to be a story to explain that somewhere........

Anyhow, congrats on a super buck.

No wonder he lived for awhile. It would be easy to mistake his rack as a bunch of sage.
Thanks for posting a pic of him Jeff.
Best,
Jerry

That guy realy dresses like he hunted hard. lol probably in a fenced area but if it wasnt congrats to him geat buck!!!

I didnt notice the suitcase or whatever it is the first time I looked at the picture. Looks like he had a tough hunt...lol
Hey IdahoMuley I sent you a pm

Its funny, the guy has a white shirt and khaki jacket, and they are both CLEAN. The deer is caped, and not a drop of blood on him?!?! It makes it a little suspicious of the whole ordeal. The deer isnt that impressive for 288" either. The horns dont have much mass for 288" does it?

what the hell is a cactus buck? ive heard people talk about it on here all the time, like they are crappy? if thats a cactus buck, then i like them! what makes a buck...cactus?!? someone please enlighten me.

A lot of things have been rumored about the elusive cactus bucks. I In my lifetime have only seen 1.
People say they only stay in velvet and this I believe to be true. Every "True" Cactus buck I've ever seen killed has been in the velvet. They say it's due to a hormonal imbalance due to the lack of no testicular fortitude. Trtuh be told I believe it. Put it in perspective that in order for a deer to rub he needs to get the urge that the ruts coming on. If he has no testicals then why rub? Hence why they get SOOOOOOOOO Big. Thats just my 411.

Something I have noticed over the years is that every time a big deer hits the ground there is a select few that tend to trash the accomplishment. I have no idea what these people have stuck up their arses to make them so bitter and ugly but I am glad to know that I dont fall into that catagory and its nice to know that 98% of the people that frequent this website are not like that. As for a white shirt and khaki jacket, who cares? Does it make the person any less of a hunter because he does not have camouflage on? If thats the case then my guides/trackers in Sonora must be crap hunters because they dont wear a lick of it. As for the lack of blood on the hunter, I think that more people should take the time to get cleaned up and take better photos. Granted, this photo is not of the quality that most like to see at least the tongue is not hanging out and there is not blood all over. I fail to see how that is "suspicious". I ALWAYS have my hunters get cleaned up before I take pictures, I think that it is respectful to do so for the animal. As for whether or not the deer is impressive, I guess thats a decision that would have to be made on a personal level. 288" is big in my book, I dont care if its a cactus buck or a hard horned buck, that deer would hit the ground if I were hunting. Its definately a once in a lifetime trophy. The deer has better than 8" bases and last time I checked that was pretty impressive. The deer does not carry it to the top but its 288"! My personal favorite though is the high fenced arguement. I GUARANTEE that this is a free roaming desert mule deer. I would be willing to bet that there is not a hioght fence within 100 miles of that place and I doubt that there is any in the county he was hunting.
To the 2% of A-holes that want to trash this guy, why dont you go crawl back underneath the bridge you came from.

Happy New Year,

Drummond

Awesome deer..mediocre pic. I've had more than my share of pics turn out crummy. This pics also looks as if it was put in someones shirt pocket for a week or so.

As for the caped out deer/clean shirt deal, I think the story in the San Antonio papers give some light on the subject. If I remember right he took some guys from town back out to the same area to confirm his story. He may have been wearing a ghillie suit when he killed the deer, but he was obviously in clean clothes for the pic. I've seen many pics of caped deer in someone's back yard...some of the deer mounted. It doesn't mean that the deer was that way when they killed it! LOL I just take it that the pics didn't turn out good, or he didn't have anybody to take the pics with him and the deer.

288" is 288" Big is not always pretty. If you look at the B&C record books, the top NT muley heads are downright UGLY, but very big nonetheless. Some people are typical people, others love a big nontypical rack. Almost everbody loves a droptine buck, and this one has three that I can see from the pic. That deer helps TX live up to its ego, because that is truley a "Texas-Size" deer.

Happy New year. I agree Drum. You guys got this set this web thing up and attracted these a holes. I don't think most of them could find a buck in their own back yard!

Hey Drummond, have you received all your apologies from those who doubted you when you first reported on a 280 point Texas deer being taken?
Just wondering.

How did the hunting go in Sonora?

No, I did not but they dont need to apologize to me, its more fun watching some try to choke down some crow, LOL. Besides that, 288" is almost unreal and if I had not heard it from a great friend and resource that knows big deer I probably would have had my doubts. The person that deserves the apology is the man that killed this deer. I had the pleasure of talking with him on the phone a couple of weeks ago and he is an extremely humble man that knows he was incredibly lucky to harvest such a great animal. It is free roaming and he is in fact a sheriffa deputy in this almost obscure county in the state.

Thats a great deer, never doubted it for a minute,,,,,,but I'm still waiting for pics of that 425 lb deer that was popped and bragged about on the other "Tx 288" post.

As stated above "he definately nailed a nice one"

In my opinion the details in the picture still are funny. How can a person not be a little bewildered with that pic.

Maybe he did go back to town and get cleaned up and then again maybe he didn't. I don't know. None the less, when I looked at the pic I was thrown for a quick loop and had to glance again while thinking in my mind "what the flip".

Suitcase :D
Casual business dress :D
No sling :D

Besides this funny stuff, he definately nailed a nice one.

Wow, I think someone is feeling a little inadequate and maybe just a tad sorry for themself. Possibly has some "bone envy" as well. Grow up rightwinger. Your little rant makes you sound more like a leftwinger.
