When would you guys go on an unguided archery elk hunt in an OTC unit in CO? Pick any 6 day period up till the end of Sept. First week? Week before muzzy seaon? Week after muzzy season? During muzzy season?
Let's hear it, I need some suggestions!

First week of Sept. would be my choice. The bulls are out 'cruzin' and there are fewer hunters in the field. They bulls will come into cow calls, just be ready as they will most likely come in slow and quite. I have had great success during this time as the bulls are not 'educated' and in Colorado they are younger bulls most of the time that are eager to 'hook up' with a cow or two before other bulls show up.

What part of CO are you planning to hunt in?

Thanks proutoors. That is actually what I am leaning towards. I don't want to go while the muzzy's are there, and the week after there will be less bulls and they will be more spooky, even though the rut will be cranked up more.
Also, I can carry a Hoockie Mama or other "easy to use" cow call as my bugleing is not quiet up to par. :)
I am unsure of the unit as of now.

Leave the bugle tube at home, then you wont be tempted to use it. The last thing I would do is bugle at elk the first week of Sept., later you bet. Light calling with a hoochie or several other cow calls will get good results when used at the right time in the right way. Good luck. Just curious, are you a CO res. or an alien? I am a Utard but have spent alot of time chasing wapiti in CO.

I would pick the first week of archery followed by the last week. The first week because of the reasons already mentioned.
If you can get into a out of the way spot where pressure has been light the last week can be a huge kick to hunt.

Some units in Colorado have a few rifle deer hunters the second week of archery season. If not that is my choice. Ken

I enjoy the first week of the season in my OTC bow elk unit.

I like to hunt before the big Labor Day wknd crowd hits the mountain and all the hikers/tourists/dogs off leashes.. ect.!!

I carry the 'hoochie' and very seldom use it....

I like to spot and stalk them dang elk!

If your going around Basalt/Carbondale/Aspen shoot me a PM and I'll give ya a few heads-up area's....

proutdoors - I am an alien :) from North Dakota. I have hunted CO a couple times. I am trying to invade your state as well, started getting elk points in UT a couple years ago. I only have about 10 years to go till I draw. :(

Robb - Thank you for the offer. If I decide around your neck of the woods, I will get in contact with you. I'm really interested in finding a pack out service if I get one down.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!!!
