LAST EDITED ON Jan-05-07 AT 02:18PM (MST)[p] oh i hate this time of year. I fret and fret about what to do for nothing because i never seen to draw anyway. Every year that goes by i gain more points. Every year i get more points so i put in for a harder unit to draw.. endless cycle.
So, here is this years dillemma. 11 points, do i go for a Manti rifle tag? of do i try and get a San Juan/Pahvant archery tag. the way i look at it is at this point i know that i would be REALLY close to drawing just about any archery tag in the next 2 years if i dont draw this year.
I know i could find some help on Juan or Manti, but i dont know Jack about Pahvant. Plus the odds will tip on the Juan/Pahvant archery like they do every year. last year everyone was on the Juan bandwagon and this year since they have 2 tags everyone will bail over to Pahvant this year. Even though Garths "odds scewing" rag said 11 points will get a tag in Pahvant Archery i bet it wont. But if anyone is interested in going to Pahvant if i draw to do some calling and video give me a PM, it may help me make a choice. Beers on me, for whatever days i had left after the hunt before the plane flys home! At this point in the game i just wonder if i should stay in it for the long haul.
a 370 rifle bull would be a dream fullfiller for me, 360 for archery. anything less than 350 i would be a bit remorsefull with this long a wait. Opinion?? Have at it

With 11 points I would not go Manti. I like to archery, muzzle, and rifle hunt. Better chances of killing a 350 plus bull in my opinion is rifle and muzzle. You can kill a big one with bow. You have 40 yards yards range compared to 125-150 with muzzle. Pahvant, San Juan, Dutton, Beaver, SouthWest desert, and Boulder are your best bet. Archery, you have first crack at the bulls. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-05-07 AT 03:33PM (MST)[p]Just get a tag and go hunt. But if you will be remorseful with a sub 350 bull then you'd best hold out for the best units. Can you really tell the difference between a 345 bull and a 352 bull? Or a 350 and a 365 for that matter? Just get a tag, go hunt, and have fun. The rifle hunt will be easier. Stay away from archery units that have concurrent spike hunts. Any unit in Utah will allow you to shoot a 350+.

If it were my points, I would go SJ and hire BTO. But thats just me....

:( Somebody didn't like bouncing betty :(

What? BTO? i didnt know they were still playing together. Cool, having BTO play kick azz rock around the campfire, unplugged of course.

Can someone enlighten me on how tags are drawn in UT. I thought that the amount of points you have was not a factor. I have 8 NR moose and 7 elk. I thought that all those points just gave me 8 and 7 chances. I thought that a guy with 1 point could draw.

YOU DON'T BE A PRICK,THATS WHAT!!!

WELL schmalts!!!

REMEMBER THE TRADE I OFFERED YOU???

REMEMBER TURNING IT DOWN???

I KNOW WHERE A FEW BIG STINKY BULLS ARE!!!

I ALSO KNOW WHERE THERES A BUCK WITH WEAK FRONTS!!!

RIGHT AFTER THE DRAW LET ME KNOW IF YOU'RE STILL LOOKING FOR A PISSCUTTER TO SHOOT!!!

THE ONLY bobcat WITH A LITTLE INFO IN A COUPLE OF BIG STINKY BULL UNITS BUT YOU'LL HAVE TO STRAIGHTEN YOUR ACT UP BEFORE I TELL YOU WHERE YOU CAN SHOOT ONE!!!

RE: YOU DON'T BE A PRICK,THATS WHAT!!!

Tracker 12,

If a unit has more than 1 NR tag, one of those tags goes to the highest point holder, the rest are random draw.

No question.....San Juan archery. If you have not been down there in a while it will just blow your mind how many bulls are on that unit. There are spike hunters on the Manti unit and the Paughvant still gets a lot of the attention because it's centrally located. I think your best bet is definately SJ.

It's always an adventure!!!

schmalts,

I changed my mind from last year when we talked. Have you given any thought to a pahvant Muzz tag? ... Pahvant, Beaver, San Juan. If you decide to Put in for the pahvant, give me a shout. I personally would much rather hunt a premier unit then one that I can draw and hope for a 350+ bull..

LAST EDITED ON Jan-05-07 AT 09:36PM (MST)[p]Probably will do the Pahvant archery as i think i am a year out yet on Muzz, and anything for Juan. I know that as usual half the guys that put in for Juan will bail onto Pahvant this year. It seems to go in bi-annual swings. If it took 11 points to draw last year it will take 12 to draw this year more than likely. But hey, what else am i going to do.

As usual, does anyone know what he is talking about? Anyone even care?
If the Mods find this post getting out of hand i would hope that they have the spine to just nuke your comments rather than the entire post as usual.

Both SJ and Pahvant archery were about the same last year. 12 guaranteed you a tag and 11 had a slim chance at one. Muzz on the Pahvant was 1 more than that. With those numbers bumping up by one this year, you might not be in the bonus pool in any of those hunts. Frankly, if you can't hit the bonus pool tags, you aren't much better than anyone else when it comes to odds in the tough units. Odds are pathetic across the board unless you can chase those bonus tags. With that in mind, I'd put in for the best hunt and maybe go rifle since your odds stink anyway.

If you'll be disapointed in anything less than a 350" bull, then I wouldn't recommend archery. You may very well get the chance, but I know a lot of good archers who have come home with less than a 350" bull on those units.

Thanks for the info. I did not realize that. Guess I will have to wait a few years for my moose tag.

schmalts!!!

I JUST READ THE BIBLE!!!

YOU DON'T LIVE IN UTAH SO YOU CAN'T GET A MIS-MANAGEMENT BULL TAG!!!

YOU DON'T WANT ONE OF THEM ANYWAY!!!

I'D TRY FOR THE PAHVANT RIFLE IF I WERE YOU!!!

THE ONLY bobcat!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-07 AT 10:59AM (MST)[p]Lets not forget bonus point creep. Every year, everyone gets another point. 15 poins today is only worth what 3 points were 12 years ago for these premium hunts! Even my friend with 15 points could have to wait 10 more years to draw a resident Pahvant Rifle Tag. For NR's its even worse because only one or usally none bonus point tags are available per hunt. It will take more than a lifetime (literally) to clear some of these hunts.

Just try to win the lottery in your home state, and then buy a conservation tag! Thats my plan. :D

The only thing bad about the San juan archery is that now you will have to compete with more archery hunters because of the managment tags, it would be a waste of points on archery in san juan for that reason, they screwed up the archery hunt, I will wait the long run for a rifle tag until things are changed.

Several archery hunters went unfilled on the san juan last year. Somebody keeps telling everyone that there is a bull behind every tree, San juan unit is going down hill fast, and if people don't take a look it will be a crapy unit in 3 years, over hunted cows and bulls, but nothing we can do because management plan is only for 1,000 head. and 300 on the cwmu's, we need to increase our management plan to 2,000 so we can keep the unit in good shape.

I agree. The San Juan sucks, go some where else. Please hire BTO it helps keep the age objective down.

I read Mike Eastman saying something about next year Utah will require a license to be purchased prior to apply for a tag. He was advocateing if you don't draw this year not to apply next year. I haven't followed it alot but have alot of time tied up in Utah tags waiting for a shot. Did they do it to me like Oklahoma,Arizona,Nevada and Colorado? Sooner or later I see a huge class action lawsuit coming out of these Preference points/Bonus Points that you are required to buy to have a chance then the payoff is they change the rules to suit their needs. I just want to go elk and deer hunting and have a chance at a respectable animal without swarms of people watching. What say the experts?

madmike I read Mike Eastman saying something about next year Utah will require a license to be purchased prior to apply for a tag.

Wrong you don't have to bye a license prior to apply.

Mike Eastman knows about as much as a pig knows about going to Sunday School.

You will need to buy a license in 2008 to apply in Utah if I remember correctly. I don't think they go into effect until July 1, 2007 which makes it not affect the current 2007 applications.

You are going to have to buy a small game licence in order to put in for the premit. This will allow you to hunt and everything else here in the state and I think it allows you to fish as well.

From what I understand in 2008 you will need to purchase a license to draw in Utah. Not sure on the price. I think 40-50 dollars for NR. About 65% of people who put in for draws don't buy a license. The draw odds are getting worse. The majority of people who put in for hunts are not paying anything, but five dollars to apply. Those days will be over. It still wont be like Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, (150 dollars)and expensive points in Wyoming 300 dollars. Sheep 100, moose 75, elk 50, deer 40, antelope 30. It's expensive to draw out of state hunts.

If you want to see how little bonus points help you to draw in utah UNLESS you have max points, go to the dwr website look up the draw results for last year on each individual hunt and see where the tags go after the 1/2 are taken for max points.
rarely does a person that is in the pool of max points who does not get the max point tag get a regular draw tag.
I almost thought that they were not putting those applicants back into the regular draw. However, occasionally 1 does get a tag, but not very often.

so, I have a question?
If you are the the max point pool of applicants and you do not draw a max point tag, when they send you back to the regular draw do you take the draw number you used in the max point pool?
or do you get a new number for the regular draw?

NVdrhntr:

I had the same question, being in the second highest pool of points. When I called, they told me the max point guys go back into the regular draw and get assigned a new random number, based on the lowest random number assigned to each of their bonus points.

Example:

You have ten (or whatever number you want to use) bonus points and do not draw in the max point draw. You then go into the draw for the remaining tags. You are assigned eleven (ten for points and one for current application) random numbers and they use the lowest of your eleven numbers for purposes of the draw on these tags remaining after the max bonus point draw.

That is what they told me, so I assume it is correct.

Happy Hunting!
