Ibex

I am curious, did anyone on here apply for ibex ?

Also has anyone drawn a ibex tag in the past and if so I'm curious what your experience was ?

It has always been a dream hunt of mine so I started applying this year I know the odds are against me but can't draw if you don't apply.

I would love to see some pics

I got one in 2013, most unique hunt ever! The mountain is intimidating, and the goats are really cool! The recovery of the animal off the mountain was harder work than I've ever had on animal the size of a deer. Even if you don't draw just go hike the mountain, it'll be an awesome experience!

I've applied for years...never drawn. I always do rifle and muzzy as I feel with archery I would be just paying the state $
I did kill two nanny's up there once. Got a call from G&F offering 10 Billy tags to those who provided 2 nanny heads. Still had to pay $160. Turned in two nanny heads. 1 of 29 to fulfill the request. And got the Email. "Congrats...on your nanny hunt but unfortunately you did not get drawn on the Billy tag." The rock is big and ugly to say the least...but an amazing hunt! They have eyes like eagles. Super fun hunt! Go for it! Good luck!

Thanks well if I did draw I would let you guys know ... I know the odds are highly against me I applied for the muzzleloader hunt too maybe have a chance at a tag but not be as challenging at the archery also with the hopes of maybe draw a muzzleloader tag and then going back a few years later with A bow.

Why did the state want to harvest nannys and so many of them ?

82ndreddevel do you have any pics or a story ? Was it a rifle, muzzleloader or archery hunt ?

You can't draw unless u put in. Good luck to u in the draw. I hunted them once for archery. Hardest hunt by far I've ever been on. Keep yourself hidden. Never sky light your self. And he in great physical shape.

So I was fortunate enough to draw this tag on my first try. So my dad and I went up the West side of the mountain near Mahoney park and were getting near the top when we stopped for a sandwich and to glass. I was glassing areas that were over a kilometer away when I caught this guy out of the corner of my eye walking around at 2 pm in the afternoon. I quickly proned out and ranged him at 400. I got him right in the heart and he took 1 leap up to big rock to get a way and fell back over. His body is actually smaller than some of the ones I had seen scouting but his horns measured out to 39 3/4". Like I said getting them off the mountain is a bit rougher than most other animal recoveries. My dad was in his 60s and was not as sure footed as he was when he was younger and I wanted to get him off the mountain before it got dark. So basically I just gutted him and then cut him in half and loaded him on the pack frames and made our way down. Like I said man, don't wait to draw a tag to make a trip up there. Even if you don't have a tag just throwing on a pack and hiking around with some bins and a spotting scope for a weekend sure beats the hell out of watching Eastmens outdoors or something like that from home LOL. The Floridas is the only place in North America where you can observe free ranging ibex, its an opportunity worth taking advantage of. Or if you are a bow hunter, than I would at least add that as my third choice. I know a few people that have bagged one with a bow and neither of them were outside of what would be considered ethical bow range. I just haven't applied for archery ibex since I killed mine because I have limited time available and I want to focus on elk and deer.
Also, one thing that is noteworthy about that place is the mines. There are tons of mines marked on maps and some not marked on maps. Some are even at ground level around the base of the little florids. But they are simply just unmarked holes in the ground, so watch where you walk, especially in low visibility. Good luck in the draw man, I hope you get that tag! Even if you don't, try to find time to go down there and check it out, but don't forget your snake gators!

Overpopulation and so few taken during the draw hunts IMO.

I drew my first try, muzzle loader. Like a nice Billy. Awesome hunt, awesome animal, can't say enough good things about it

Bogey talking to you and always wanting to hunt ibex is the reason I decided to start applying this year. I hope I am as lucky as you and 82ndreddevil and draw my first year! Does anyone know the percent of tags given to NR and resident ?

Same as every other animal. 84% vs 6%

He should have explained a little more.

84% Resident, 6% Non-Resident, 10% outfitters

>Hideserthunter what weapon did you apply
>for ?

I applied for rifle and muzzloader nonresident. Definitely a long shot but ya never know! Good luck to ya.

Took me 12 yrs to draw a muzzleloader tag as a resident. It's a good hunt but not as hard as people on here make it seem. plenty of trophy goats on the mtn. If u don't sit behind a desk for a living it's not a hard mtn to climb. As a non resident the chances aren't great but even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then so u never know.

Hideserthunter I wasn't aware we could apply for more then one hunt when it came to ibex in the same year . Or have you applied for muzzleloader one year and rifle another? Also how many years have you been applying ?

Well I hope I'm the blind squirrel that finds the nut haha ! Anyway you have any pics or a story of your hunt ? What size Billy's are considered a trophy? Anything over 40+ or are their some that are 50+ ?

He didn't ask about outfitters ;)

I think I read something about the cougars when hunting ibex that if you draw a ibex tag you can kill the cougars while your hunting the rock , is that a old law that isn't anymore ?

Are you talking about choices? You get 3 choices for each species brother!!

So I went ahead and applied for three hunts but I applied for muzzleloader and then 2nd and 3rd rifle which I doubt there is anyway you can draw a rifle as your second or third . I guess I know better now and will do archery as my second and third choice next year.

Is there any advantage to purchasing a license in New Mexico if you don't draw? Because I selected the option of not purchasing a license if I don't draw .

Well I consider myself extremely fit and a bit of a pack mule and that mountain can kick anyone's butt. But your right, it shouldn't take a lot to fill a tag.

You can try and grab a left over tag

Thank you for all the input front everyone. I appreciate it !

Does anyone know what is considered a average ibex on the rock and what a large ibex from the is considered ?

LAST EDITED ON Mar-27-17 AT 10:43AM (MST)[p]Dang that's a huge ibex did you shoot that ? Is that a 50 inch ibex ? Was that shot in New Mexico ?

Yes, it was a cool article. I paid to get their plaque with the article on it and it is hung underneath the life size mount.

That was a lucky shot with the cat running away. Could not do much with what was left.

That's awesome! I think this must have happened before I was a part of MM. Could you post the story? What an amazing animal!

Taken in the Little Florida's in 2010 with a muzzleloader. 46" on one side 43" on the other. Is an incredible hunt, best of luck in the draw.
