Been talking with an outfitter who has a camp in unit 37 Cloud Peak Wilderness. He suggested my friend and I apply for a type 9 license and hunt the first week of archery (also fits my schedule better). What's the hunting pressure like at this time, and what kind of bulls does this area hold? What are my chances of pulling the tag with 1 pref point?

If the first week is Sept 1st, I'd say he's trying to fill a spot he hasn't been able to fill. I've hunted the first 2 weeks of Sept for my last time bout 10 years ago. I prefer to start hunting around the 15th and hunt till the end of the month. Rut and weather. The first week of Sept, even in high elevation has warm days that put the elk to bed early each morning and keeps them bedded til almost dark.

If you were hunting a more arid climate like NM or Az, I'd say the early part of the season can be awesome over the right waterhole or wallow. My opinion after spending too many early sept's napping through the mid-day heat on Montana archery hunts.

If the first wek is Sept 15th, My opinion is go as that is prime-time.

I think you would have a great hunt. Good outfitter, and frankly even if the elk are not screamin on Sept 1, you will see bulls. If you wait til mid-late September to go, you take the chance of a snowstorm pushing off the mountain for good. Happens every year.

I know of 1 bull taken opening day archery, probably very close to Triple 3 camp, that was 365+.

Doubt you will see many other hunters, maybe a couple hard core locals.
