Just noticed Chad Harris' monster buck from Colorado in the photo gallery. Looks like a great buck that would give Jim Norlocks BC Hawg a run for the money in Monstermuleys Big Buck contest. Not sure if Chad's is entered but what a buck!!!!!!Whose do you think is nicer out of the two? Both have good mass, lots of points, and wide spreads. Definitely, two that would both be worthy winners.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-05-04 AT 11:21PM (MST)[p]Chad's buck is a monster for sure! Too bad he didn't do the thumbs up. It is a HAWG!
Gary Christensen's nontypical and Dean Herron's typical look like they are the ones that are going to give Jim's BC buck a run for the money in the contest. All 3 bucks are absolutely incredible. Of course I'm cheering for Jim, the local BC boy, but Dean is from Alberta, so seeing another Canadian Toad in there is awesome. And what a frame that typical has. Wow!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-05-04 AT 11:30PM (MST)[p]Hows the big buck contest rated ???? Is it by the biggest buck by score or just big ???

Clearly the other bucks score more than Jim's as his buck will net around 203 or 204 non-typical ??

Just curious as to how the whole judging system works.

Makes me wish I had remembered to do the thumbs up ... but was too excited to remember lol.

BCBucks,
It would have been awesome to see you with the thumbs up too. I'm still awed by all the trash your buck has. LOL! Next year you should make sure you and your family memebers do some thumbs up pics. It would be awesome to stack the BC bucks in the contest next year.
I think the winner is chosen on all round wall appeal and not just on score. Of course score does play a role in wall appeal.

The most impressive will win. Obviously, in my book, the more bone, the more impressive. But, a good looking, heavy, long tined 4 point is also rare and impressive.

What do you guys think? What are the best 3 bucks and best 3 bulls in the contest?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-06-04 AT 00:42AM (MST)[p]I couldn't decide on a best three bucks .... so I picked the 4 that grabbed my eye the best......

In no particular order -

Dean's Alberta Brute --- that mass, that tine length .. what a combo......

Paul's Wyoming Trophy Buck --- heavy, just heavy and wide...wow...nothing dissproportionate about this buck...perfect mass to go with the tine lengths ..... a beauty.

Gary's 34 Inch 9x10 Colorado buck --- an incredible non-typical trash buck - this buck has it all, main frame and non-typical points ... awsome!!!

Jim's Massive BC Hawg --- I held those antlers and I can testify .... MASS -- unreal mass and the score doesn't do it justice....incredibly heavy and wide.

Check later for my elk choices.

PS - Chad Harris's buck is an awsome buck .. but I don't see a thumbs up sign.

After a slow start I would have to say that Britich Columbia took the cake on the state that will produce the most big 2003 muleys. This should be an interesting contest and Can't wait for next years to come.

IMHO this is what my votes are:
Best buck so far Dean Herron
Best Bull so far Carols Martinez

Big Buck Contest Vote:

1. Dean's Typical
2. Jim's BC Hawg
3. Gary's CO Buck

Any of the 3 would be worthy winners for sure.

My votes would be the following:

1. Jim's Massive BC Buck- everything you could want, dream, etc. in a big buck and then some.
2. Gary's Colorado Buck- lot's of points, width, mass, has it all.
3. Dean Herron's Alberta Buck- Awesome Heavy typical.

Consolation prizes would go to Steve Dana's unique looking buck. The dropper side is very impressive with a lot of character. Also, Bud Latturners' and Van Thompson's bucks are certainly impressive.

I wish Chad Harris would have got the thumbs up. I would have had a hard time between his buck and Jim's. Very impressive to say the least.

Congratulations to all no matter who ends up winning!!!

I like Dean's overall frame the best. It has everything I look for..... good mass, deep forks-pistol grip g-2's & 3's, above average brow's, and good long g-4's and decent width, other than the main's could be a little longer from what i can see with the pic,not real sure from the angle....but put all of that together with no trash and you have one awesome typcial! Just my opinion......and if that is the youngester in the pic that took the buck, all i can say is CONGRADULATIONS!!!!!!

there are several other good bucks that are right behind this dude to me.....Dwayne

i say deans alberta brute takes the cake. Look at the tine lenth and what mass. You hardly see any monstarous typical without any garbage on them. He is a sure winner

What a great group of deer. Could not pick a winner unless by total points. All worthy. Any would make a guy happy (if not he/she should stop hunting).

I actually agree w/ Cass fore once. Not too mention, if a picture of that buck was takin w/ a kid holding it!!! It'd look like a freak of nature;)

Here's how I would rate the top four:
#1-Dean's Alberta Brute-Can't deny an all-time booner like this one.
ryanherron10104-3.jpg

#2-Gary's 34-Inch 9x10 Colorado Buck-Awesome booner, not sure about the thumbs?
garychristensen10104-2.jpg

#3-Van's Big Buck-Great mass, great frame.
vanthompson10103-1.jpg

#4-Jim's Massive B.C. Hawg-Mass, mass, and more mass.
jimnorlock120103-3.jpg

What a great bunch of bucks, here's a few more of of my favorites:
Chester's P&Y Velvet Buck-A mathmatical beauty.
Tavish's Big Utah Buck-Gotta love those back forks.
Nathan's Utah Rifle Buck-A "stylin" buck.
Mark's 30-Inch Trophy Buck-High and wide.
A Big Buck for Jim-Lot's of style.
David's Colorado Trophy Buck-Love the horns, hate the velvet.
Bud's 32-Inch Wyoming Buck-Everything but those G-4s.
Kerry's Wyoming Brute-Everything but those G-4s.

The mass on the BC buck smokes them all. Mass trumps everything. I'd like to see the weight on that rack.
BC Cheerleader- Do you have any more pictures of that rack off the skull and maybe some mass measurements. That Alberta buck is a toad but I think the photos are pretty flattering where as the photos of the BC buck do not do it justice. A good comparison is Van's buck and the BC buck. Van's is really heavy and the BC buck's mass, well, like I said, SMOKES THEM ALL!

Of course thats just my opinion. I could be wrong.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-08-04 AT 02:46PM (MST)[p]Are you talking the BC typical, or nontypi? I was complying, that if the 245 gross CO buck was to be held by a kid, then a pic taken of it. Would give the (Quote on quote) "PETA", look to the rack...

Friggin, enormous...

You're right. Mass, is a "heavy weighing" factor, that's fore sure. I don't think the bit of mass, can compete w/ the nearly 30"s of greater tine length, frame and extras of the CO, IMO...

I like mass. First thing I look fore is length...

Here's the only pic I have that shows the mass a little better on Jim's buck. Mass is always something that is hard to photograph. Maybe Sitkaspruce or BCBucks has some more pics that haven't been posted yet to get an idea on the mass. By far, this buck is my favorite in the contest.

I had to study that Deans buck for a couple mins just to make sure it had been killed this year. I had my dad standing next to me and we examined it. At first, I thought it was a mount but on the second picture he's holding the ears in a different position. Deans buck is one for the books defintely, I'm not gonna deny it anything it isn't.
Mass is a thing that really gets my eyes lookin, That BC Hawg sure has a lot of it, but my vote goes for The 9x10 outa colorado.
BC Has produced some tremendous bucks this year and IMO should get the recognition of being the Top Mule Deer Place for 2003.
