First off - I'm not expecting anyone to volunteer information on their favorite honey holes.
That being said, I'm looking for some information that could point me in the direction of good quality hunt in CO. That leaves it wide open so here are some details: I'm a CO resident, have 5 preference points, looking for something to hang of the wall 180+ (like most of you), looking for a do-it-yourself hunt. (Appreciate the experience and knowledge of guides, but get more out of the hunt if I've done the work myself). Plus I don't have $80,000 to pay for a buck. Not sure if I have enough pref. points now for a good hunt or if I should keep saving. I'd like some ideas on units to scout or maybe the Ranching for Wildlife (Ranches) to contact.

Any info would be appreciated.

By the way, this is the BEST DAMM Website EVER.....

Go hunt unit 10. You should be able to draw the first rifle buck hunt with 5 points. Lots of deer. Relatively easy unit to hunt. You will see lots of game and you should be able to kill a gross 180 plus buck if you know the difference between a 172 buck and a 182 buck. Yeh, I know it sounds easy. But most guys can't pass up a 172 buck and you'll see 10 of those for every 182 buck. Cow elk hunters can screw things up on opening day so arrive 3-5 days earlier and do your hunting as scouting and know where you want to be on opening morning.

I used 4 points on a hunt out east a month ago. I was very happy wth the quality of bucks. If you would like more details email me or use the private message thing (I'll try to remember to look in it). Also look at the CDOW website for RFW ranches. www.wildlife.state.co.us
Look under big game. Also look at the stats for preference point breakdown for the ranches.

vinihunt :)

I've been hunting around Kremmling lately, any area that looks rough or thick enough to get away from hunters. I haven't been out that way (unit 10)- what does the terrin look like ?

Lotsa good Colorado guys here that might point ya in the right dirction. i agree DK would give you some quality info, he"s helped me before with elk and deer

What would you guys do ? Keep saving pref. points or would 5 points be enough for a good unit or Ranching for Wildlife property?

Burn em'. Ranching fore wild $$$$$, isn't worth 2 points, IMO... You can get into a pretty damn good hunt w/ 5 points. I third the need, fore you to call Jeff aka "Deerking"... 303-651-6273...

Best hunt consultant in Colorado. May end up costing you a small fee. But will be worth 100 times that w/ the end result...

I highly recommend the early September rifle season timberline hunts. Burned 8 points this year and got a great buck, but the challenge and the country we hunted in were worth the trip. You should be able to draw on of the decent wilderness hunts with 5 points.

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

Looking,

I spent a lot of years building points and hunted a RFW. I wish I had Done something different, or for the points many somethings different.

Burn the points, don't wait
