I don't know much about Arizona, just know there are great bulls there but extremely hard to draw. I'm one of those that will put in, regardless, because you can't get drawn if you don't try. I've heard decent things about unit 6a, so figured I'd put in for that one. This will be my first year to put in -I plan on putting in for 6a - hunt #3004 (September 28 through October 4). Is this what I should be putting in on? I don't plan on drawing, but if drawn, want it to be a good unit. I couldn't find the draw odds and the number of permits issued for this unit during this time frame last year. Also, do I put in for the permit, and if drawn, pay for the permit and then the license as well? Or when do I buy the license? And, if I just apply for the permit and don't draw, is this all I need to do to get the bonus point?

You have to buy the license just to apply, to be honest you have no chance of drawing that tag this year but that could change next year so you might want to start building points if you're young. if you want to understand why you have no chance try to search for Don Martin's post on the issue, it's tough to explain but he's right on the mark.

I didn't figure I had a chance. So your saying I'm going to be out my license fee every year just to get a bonus point? I thought you paid the license and permit fee, then, if not drawn, you were refunded your money, all except $10 or $20 depending on the state.

But anyway, yes, I am young somewhat, at 26, so maybe by the time I'm 46 I'll have drawn.

The license used to be refunded if you didn't want the point but now I'm pretty sure you don't have a choice, so you're out the license fee once you buy it. at your age it might be worth building points, I'm 44 and if I didn't have quite a few ( max on deer ) I wouldn't start now.

That's a rip. For a non-resident, the license fee is $232.50. So that means they are charging me $232.50 just for a bonus point and chance to draw?

I realize I can just purchase the bonus point for $7.50 though.

So I guess my options are to either pay $7.50 for a bonus point with no hopes of drawing or pay the $232.50 with a slight, slight, chance of drawing and if not drawn, get the bonus point?

I'm almost sure you have to buy the license to even get a point, and you don't have a chance to draw either way for a top quality tag unless you have max points. that will probably change down the road and you'll have a slim chance again. so if you ever want to hunt in AZ you might as well start taking your hosing, after a while when you get screwed enough times by enough states you get used to it.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-19-07 AT 07:45AM (MST)[p]I'm really not trying to be an a$$, although you may think different, but please download the regulations and do a little reading. The answers to all your questions will be there. It will explain the entire application, draw, and payment/license issues you have asked about. Also, if the hunt is not listed in the drawing odds section, it means the hunt did not take place the previous year, therefore there is no data for it. Again, sorry if I sound like an a$$.

It's Bush's fault!!!

At the risk of cutting my own throat, I'll tell you guys a little "Secret" about elk applications in Arizona for 2007.

In Arizona, only the bull tags are limited by regulation to no more than 10% to nonresidents.

Antlerless and ANY elk tags do not come under that restriction. I think the ANY tags kinda fell through the restriction regulations "crack"..

Anyway, if one was to look through the 2007 proclamation and look for ANY elk tags in various locations around AZ, one might find a hunt where a person from out of state with no to just a few points might have a chance.

Caveat. These are TOUGH, TOUGH hunts, with not a lot of elk in them. Success on these hunts are usually only in the single digits, though there may be some guides (hint-hint) who may know where to find bulls on these hunts. If drawn, plan to hunt the entire time they give you cause you'll probably need it.

I personally know a famous TV hunting host from the Midwest who drew one of these tags last year after he and I spoke.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to hunt with him and he came up empty. However, he had never applied for elk in AZ before and yet he drew a rifle rut tag..

Just how good can these hunts be? As a resident, I do have some bonus points and one of those hunts ( I can't tell which one or I'll never draw)is my SECOND choice this year.

There are both archery and rifle tags in this category. Check it out and see 'ya in the field!

Don, your killing me........I know which hunts your refering to, sssshhhhhhh, dont tip off the non residents, I'm hoping for some kind of chance of getting drawn.

Is that ethical?
