Youth Deer Hunt Idaho

Looking for some info on a good youth mule deer hunt for my two boys? Has anybody hunted the Idaho October unit 46 hunt ? Thanks TR

My boy and 2 nephews drew on it last year. My son and got a fork horn out of unit 57, his cousin got a nice 3 point.The other nephew filled his tag in unit 56. Unit 55 has alot of bucks around Oakley. I have never hunted units 54,46 and 47 The hunt goes the same time as other general season and controlled deer hunts so expect opening day crowds.

It would be a good tag to put them in for and I am glade that this state offers this to young hunters. I only wish they would have done it when I was a kid.
2/3 of the kids that hunted 46* got their deer in 2001 and 2002. I'm sure most of the kids that don't take a deer on this hunt pass up shots on does and smaller bucks or shoot all of their bullets trying to get a deer. I know of a kid that had this hunt last year and he passed up on a number of decent 4 points and never filled his tag. This kid had help glassing for bucks and put in a lot of hard work and time into the hunt. Don't expect your boys to kill a buck wider than its ears unless you and your boys put in some work.

There was a misprint in the 2003 regs with unit 56 so don't get your hopes up that your boys will be able to hunt big bucks in that unit.

thanks guys, what are the odds of drawing that youth tag? What about 56 is it really that good ? TR

Unit 56 produces some big bucks but your chances of drawing a tag are pretty slim. According to the 2003 drawing odds information, only 2 tags were issued to non-residents with 164 non-resident applicants. 33 resident tags for 1031 applicants. Any of the late hunts here in Idaho are good but getting your hands on a tag is tough. The first link provided is for drawing odds, the second for harvest report information. Just select a year and give it a good look over.
