Originally from the midwest where the quality of my glasses wasn't much of an issue...since moving to CO and experiencing western states hunting, I realized otherwise...what exactly is the difference between porro prism and roof prism and what the heck does it actually mean to me...I'm looking in the range of 10X42; 10X50; 12X50....

Sealer,
Check this out (http://www.binoculars101.com/bin-design.html). I personally like 10x50's as an all round binocular. As for porro versus roof, I like the depth of field that porro prisms usually give, but roofs are much more durable and weather-proof in my opinion.

I like the roof prisms because they are lighter in weight and more compact than poro prisms. They also add about $80-100 to the cost to get the same quality of glass. You can buy good quality glass these days in the $350-500 range in a roof prism model. Be sure that you get "phase corrected" lenses in any model that you get. This makes images sharper and brings more light in at dusk. Rember that this is an investment that should last you 10yrs+. $250 is a lot of money, but it won't buy the quality of glass that you are looking for, and 2 years later, you will be wanting a new pair.
