Camo in Africa??

I am headed to Namibia in a few weeks for plains game and am thinking about what clothes to bring. Most Africa trophy photos show hunters wearing khakis not camo. I am used to hunting in camo and I was thinking about wearing it. I realize that it is overrated most of the time, but it is comfortable and I like wearing it. Maybe it is a psycological thing for me? I wear camo pants and shirt with a bright orange vest over it during the rifle season, I guess it is just a habit or ritual.

Is there a reason why don't hunters in Africa don't wear camo? Do I need to bring something else? Most importantly does Cabelas make microtex in khaki?

Wow Namibia!!

I'm excited for you. I have been to South Africa twice and you are in for the time of your life. The CAMO question comes up alot and the reason for the majority of people not wearing camo there is two fold. The first is camo pattern clothing of any sort used to be against the law in some places unless you were local military. Alot of places in Africa are still unsure of anyone who shows up in head to toe camo... The second is alot of it is hard to purchase there. The PH's that I hunted with were not bothered either way and I was much like you in that I felt it was part of my good "MOJO" for my hunting style. I ended up going with a khaki pants and a camo shirts and hat. The PH's loved the Kings camo I brought with me and I ended leaving most of there for them when I left. Hope this helps and make sure to take a good still camera with you you are in for a real treat..!

You'll have trackers, PH's, drivers, and a game scout that will not be wearing camo. They'll probably have an article or two but more then most likely a client gave it too them. You'll probably be the only one wearing it which is fine..

GOOD LUCK!!!

If there is one piece of advise I can give you.... Don't load your luggage with a pile of cloths. I took 5 shirts and pants when all I needed where two. They'll probably do laundry daily.

I took my camera, bino's and an extra set of cloths and the leagal toiletries in my carry on. Thank goodness because my bags and guns didn't show up for the first 4 days of the hunt.

Please share with us your hunt on return...

I have been told by several PH's that any camo is Illegal in most African countries. So you probly better find out from your Ph.
The last time I went to Namibia,[several years ago]. I know it was Illegal, cause I checked. But it could have changed.

Camo is fine, but most don't bother to take it. More and more of the trackers are getting it, but like was mentioned - they are usually gifts from clients. The standard green coveralls seem to be the most prevalent in an African hunting camp. Darker khakis, greens, and browns seem to work fine for a client, and you will be able to get close to your animals. Sniper brand is very popular in Namibia. Do stay away from military style camo patterns, and don't wear it in town.

I've never used camo, just drab colors, browns, light greens, etc. Not needed, but on my last trip to Namibia my PH wore camo....LOL. Not needed in N. America either except for turkeys and ducks. Have a great time and good luck.

I've noticed a few of the hunters in recent shows on the Outdoor Channel are using the same Camo Pattern I use... imagine that... Kings Desert Shadow.

Thanks for the info guys. I will check with my PH, but I will probably throw a little camo in. Got to be the early season stuff, it is 85 degrees over there right now. Just a little warmer than Roosevelt, UT. I can't wait.
