Muley Rubs

This year I hunted an area a guy turned me onto. He said he hunted it when he was young and shot some dang nice bucks out of it, but it was too tough for him now as he got lazy. Well, I"m kind of a massochist in that way so I laced my boots real tight and went for it.

It sorta sucked. It was real thick, I was never going to get a shot over 60 yards, unless...it was 500+ yards (which I dont take). There was dang good deer sign. I ended up walking right up on an old buck and a doe. He was digressed to a 3 point, mostly forked horn though. I passed on him and a small forky that day.

Anyhow, I saw a dozen or so rubs in this place that were unreal. I've never really been around muley rubs, so they kind of surprised me. A few of them were on 5 inch diameter aspens, rubbed all the way around and rubbed 1/2 to 1 inch into the wood, not just rubbing the bark off. These rubs would have made any bull proud.

When you find really aggressive looking rubs like that do you get excited about the buck being big?? Honestly, the way I looked at it, they couldn't have rubbed that wood off there without some seriously gnarly burred up bases.

Just some thoughts I wanted to share. (and yes, I'll probably visit those areas next year too!)
