Hello all, I was wondering if anyone knew of a reliable horseback drop camp service for the uintahs. Any info is much appreciated.

North Slope or South Slope? Summer or Fall need some more information here.

during mid september on the north or south slope. Hoping to pack in for the last week of the archery hunt. Only have experience on the north slope but I hear there are more Elk on the south. So, I am not sure yet.

Elkslyr, I hired an outfitter to pack me in on a guided goat hunt last fall and was very pleased with the result. They operate out of Defays ranch on the South slope by Tabiona and would recommend them. Phone @ 435-848-5567 or 435-783-5528. Ask for alan.

I wnet up on the south slope a few years abck with U-Bar. Everything was ok but I would go with another outfitter next time. I felt like they tried to nikle and dime us. We got two little five points. I hiked out the 12 miles with a 80 pound pack with one of my buddies (he also had an 80 pound pack)to have them bring extra horses. They tried to tell the remaining guy we left with the meat and some camp gear that a horse could only carry one front shoulder a piece. They were charging per horse. Great hunt but like I said I felt like U-Bar had us over a barrell. They knew it and tried to take advantage of the fact.

I second what Utah400 said. I was the guy carrying the other pack and I was really pissed when U-bar tried to tell us they would need "packing horses" versus "riding horses" to get the elk out. Then they took the same horses we rode in to pick up our buddy an the elk and tried to charge us a whole lot more than agreed upon even though two of us walked out a day early. LAME!!!

The area was great and the hunting fantastic... U-bar=Sub-par. JMHO

I've also heard good things about Defa's. I would look into their services.

If you plan on having a campfire in the Wilderness, you'll have to make sure you camp a quarter mile or more away from a lake. This reg applies to nearly all lakes on the South Slope and some on the North Slope. Probably not a problem for ya if you're only hunting and you don't plan on any fishing close to camp. For avid Uintah anglers who love campfires, like myself, it is somewhat of an inconvenience and a little irritating. At any rate, have fun up there when ya go, Its a beautiful place!

I drew the central unit and took an 8" goat. Had a good time and would love to do it again.
