I know most of you have seen him but he his just awesome to see in person. I wish I could have seen him alive. Hopefully he has some genes still out there.
I think he still has some genes out there. I've seen pics of bucks from western wyoming that have that wide, fairly flat looking rack with deep forks. But they're definitely not him. He's one of a kind.
a wyas back, like 2 years before he died, my uncle kevin shot a popeye twice, and missed it, he figured it was him, but he didnt know untill he got home that night, and studied pictures of him. There is no doubt that it was popeye, he shot 2 times with the .270 at 300 yards, and was so shook up he misssed twice.
WoW, I bet he was one of the smartest deer ever! I mean, think about it, he's a national icon when it comes to Mule Deer hunting. You know how many hunters were looking for this guy? It's amazing he never got shot. Truly a sad story to hear he's dead. I suspected it, but never really knew.
Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.
Like the rest of you, I loved this buck. I created the wallpaper below from a low resolution digital photograph that a friend of mine took at the Jackson Hole Boy Scout elk antler auction. Use it for your own wallpaper if you like.
I either read or was told that when Popeye was still walking around that one hunter, don't know who, had a good idea where Popeye was spending his summers and early fall at so he went into the area and hunted the full archery season. Not finding him, then he came back on the rifle season and hunted again right up to closing hour and still never could spot or see where the "all mighty Popeye" had been hiding.
Later when the weather started to turn bad he was back there again and watching to see if he could spot him and there he came walking just like he had so many years after the season was over and done.
He was and is a Legend that is for sure.
