I'm having a hard time with making a decision. My dad has 12 points going into the Utah Elk Draw as a resident. He is done waiting and he's not getting any younger. He stands a good chance at a smokepole monroe tag (which could be tough with all the deer hunters. He also stands a decent chance for a Mt. Dutton rifle early season. He lives in between the Beavers, Monroe and Dutton and we know the country well....Anybody have some advice? Feel free to PM me if you would like.

Looking at the odds, he stands a good chance of drawing any of the 3 units with Muzzleloader. With 12 pts, he has options that's for sure. Rifle tags, ehhh... who knows with point creep and shifting. Take Dutton early. 6 guys with 12 pts (13 now) didn't draw and 25 with 11 (12 now) didn't draw. Assuming those same numbers put in he's looking at 9 tags for 25 guys (36% odds). While those aren't bad, not guaranteed either.

If he wants to hunt bad this year for sure, pick your favorite unit, goes Muzzy and have fun!

Thank ODDNUT1. I like the idea of not competing with muzzy deer hunters and hunting the peak of the rut with a rifle. I think Mt. Dutton rifle will be what we will try for. Any other advice?

If your dad is getting up their in age and no longer a spring chicken, you might want to look else where. Dutton is rugged and steep. Why not go Wasatch or Manti? Access is great and great elk numbers. Plus he could draw a rifle tag with 12 points.

Thanks for the reply. I understand Mt.Dutton isn't as easy to hunt as Monroe, wasatch, or Manti. I drew a Manti tag three years ago and had a great time, but by looking at the odds I didn't think he can draw a Manti tag. Am I wrong? We would like to stay south of the Wasatch unit, lot of elk but lots of poeple recreating. What about Boulder?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-08-07 AT 07:51PM (MST)[p]The boulder can be a great hunt for all ages it has plenty of areas to hunt the terrain can be flat and it holds huge bulls if my dad had 12 points I would consider this over the others that have been listed. In 04 we seen a few camps around but for the most part did not have any trouble with hunting pressure and there was plenty of action.Just a solid hunt without killing yourself.
Good luck hope he can draw.

Yes, Manti (Early) would be a gamble on drawing. Mostly likely his odds wouldn't be very good on that one. Again, it really boils down to trying to draw this year. If that's the priority, Manti probably isn't a good option.

Kirt,
I really enjoy your website. I've learned a lot from it. Do you plan on including Coues Whitetail in Arizona in the future? I really like that Manti elk hunt, but my dad says "let me hurry and draw this elk tag so we can put in for deer". He would rather kill a big buck than a monster elk anyday. I think he would shoot the first 6 point bull he saw....maybe I'll hold the bullets!

Arizona is a tough state to get information. We are working with them to get bonus point data and more detailed information in the future. This year isn't looking good and we probably won't get our 06 data until Apr. (doesn't help the early Elk applicants). I would look for expansion on the Arizona front for the 2008 app season. Again, we were hoping for cool stuff this year, but no go from them.
