Anyone see or read that book about idaho elk yet? I head it came out this past fall but have not seen it. . .

Just curious if it's as good as the mule deer book by the same guy, Ryan Hatfield. . .

Thanks, Tony

I have both books and yes it is as good as the mule deer book. And it doesn't hurt to know one of the lucky guys that has a elk in the book.He works for my brother. You can get one at Sportman's warehouse or at Cabela's

I have both books, I enjoyed the Muley book more, but both are good, they can be bought at Sportsmans. I do know someone that is in the elk book and his name is spelled wrong.

7MM,
I am guessing you are referring to Phil Borresen? That was a mistake on the part of the printer, not the author. I sent them the proof changes, they charged me for making them, told me they would make them, and then didn't. It's been quite a fiasco, and I get all these books back with his name spelled wrong. I have felt horrible about it the whole time, and called him personally to let him know.
I'm trying not to let it overshadow the fact that I did an absolute ton of research and three years of effort to turn out a top quality book for Idaho hunters. It is still a burr under my saddle, and I'll always feel bad for Phil.
Otherwise, I have gotten some pretty incredible comments from people on the book, and am very happy with the way it turned out. There are some fantastic stories in there, and a ton of good history. It's nice to get it all preserved before the older generation isn't there to tell it anymore. I personally think the elk book is a better book, as I have maybe advanced my skills, and focused as much as possible on the history as well as "big antlers".
I'll be at the Boise Sports Show if anyone wants to come by and visit.

IDnative,

What are the dates for this show?

Sounds like a book I better own! Thanks for the replys, I never thought the author would be so kind as to weigh in on this subject, thanks!!!!!!!! I'll order the book.

IDnative,

Thanks for the info. I will plan to be there and see if I can look you up.

Ray

I have the book and really enjoyed the old time history. Ryan, when is the new deer book going to be out?

idahonative
That was very nice of you to call him, he is a great hunter that I enjoy being around. I have never talked to him about the mispelling. I will buy other books you write about wildlife or hunting in Idaho because they are well written, and I like looking at the trophy animals of the areas I hunt and learning of the stories assocaited with them.

I almost scared my wife when I shreaked and snatched up the last copy of it at Idaho Archery Proshop. I have eagerly awaited it. I commend you on the Book, it's a must read for any serious Idaho Elk Hunter. Keep it up !!!

Reddog,
I'm working pretty hard on the 2nd ed. of the mule deer book right now, as well as the whitetail book. I think people will be absolutely astounded at how many MORE huge bucks will be in the 2nd ed. that weren't in the first. It's crazy. Just got a story from an 80-year-old man last night, buck killed in 1957. Awesome.

7MM, Idahoelk,
Thanks for the comments on the book. It means everything that people who have the book have truly enjoyed it.

Feel free to shoot me an email if you like at [email protected] and if you know of any good leads or old-time hunting photos, let me know. Thanks. Ryan

hey Slewfoot'

wasn't that the name of the last Grizz killed here in S Oregon by George wright?

Manny,

I don't know anything about that. I have lived in Idaho for fourteen years and have not learned a lot about Oregon. I like the Appalachin mountain / Bluegrass song "Ol' Slewfoot" and that became my handle.
Down in Florida, a bunch of us would pick this song in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot on Friday nights. Folks would have a lot of fun both playing and dancing. The chorus:

"He's big around the middle and he's broad across the rump.
Runnin' ninety miles an hour; takin' thirty feet a jump.
Ain't never been caught, he ain't never been treed.
Some folks say he looks a lot like me"

The name is also a reference to the devil, who I imagine, most thought these bears to be influenced by. I took the handle only because I like the song as I have no use for el Diablo.

Slew "stepping lightly" foot

>Are you sure it wasn't Siskiyou
>County,Manny?

yes he roamed SisQ, but he was shot up on pilot rock on the SisQ mt. about a mile from the boarder...at least that was the story i heard from my 8th grade teacher?...

Manny,
I'm sure he was right. I bet that story kept you glued to your seat!
Better get the snow shovel ready for tomorrow.
