Hoping to get some help. I have 3 buddys that want to go to NM on a self guided elk hunt. We would like to get our hands on some landowner tags In an area where we have a shot at some good bulls. Any ideas on what unit and how much $ im lookin at. Any leads would be GREAT!! Thanks.

Mort important what are you willing to spend for a tag in hand (no guide)? Good tags will cost $3,000-$5,000 and what weapon (bow cheaper)

We don't want a guide, just the tags. We will be archery hunting!! I may be dreaming,,, but was hoping to spend $1000-$2000. Just want the best hunt for the $$$

You can get landowner tags in some units that have decent bulls for 1500.00 With a little work you can take 300-320 class bulls. I recommend the muzzle season. Send me a message if you want me to give you a call. I have a friend that lives in Grants and a couple of other contacts that you might want to look into.

Cheers, Roadtrip.

Brian,

I have a couple of buddies that had a good hunt with landowner tags in NM last year (archery). They didn't pay a whole bunch for the tags and got into some nice bulls.

I have a question.... How many bugle competitions can one person win?? I think you stopped by my store one day,, next time come upstairs so I can finally meet you. I've watched a few of you and Lance's hunts,,, you guys sound BITCHIN!! Are you talking about the hunt lance and I went on in NM or did you know some other guys that went down there?
Brian

Brian,

I hope to be able to answer your first question in 2 weeks... :)

I stop by your store all the time, but the gals at the counter tell me you're upstairs watching hunting videos and can't be disturbed... :) I'll ask for you next time I'm in there.

I know 2 other guys who archery hunted down there during the 1st season last year...they got into some good bulls and filled their tag. Shoot me an e-mail and I'll get some more specifics for you, [email protected]

I sent you an email. Sounds like you're going to Reno. Good luck. Your welcome to come with us if we can find a good hunt.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't try the drawing first. There's some great public land hunts. Even when you buy a landowner permit, you still have to buy the $540 or $760 NR tag from the game & fish.

I know that I still have to buy a lic. This is the kind of info i'm lookin for. What units would you suggest, drawing odds, and what size of bulls? If I wait till the draw results come out, will I have a hard time getting landowner tags(sold out)? Thanks for your input!!
Brian

It seems most landowner tags don't go up for sale until after the drawing. A NR has a great opportunity to draw here. In a lot cases, a better chance than resident. If I was you, I would be looking at units 15, 16d and 34. Or even the Valle Vidal. The way the drawing works in NM is that it will give you three choices. If your application is drawn, they will go down your choices, and you will draw the first available hunt. A common misconception is that there are 3 sperate drawings, and that is not the case.

Looks like you are getting some info. Call me later! P.S. We all know that nobody stands a chance in Reno if Buglelk shows up. Good luck Corey.

Lance/Brian,

Thanks! I'll see what kind of info I can dig up for you while I'm in Reno.

I am looking for a NM landowner tag. Any ideas on how or where to purchase one? And how much will the tags cost. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

The NM G&F has a list of landowners who recieve tags with the amount of acres a particular ranch holds. In years past they were given RO and UW tags. RO are ranch "only" and UW (unit wide) means that you can hunt their land and the unit the ranch is located on. RO you can only hunt their land. If a ranch is signed up UW other public land tag holders can legally hunt their private land. I haven't read the regs all that much for 07-08 but don't think this has changed that much. The Gila units have been known for their genetics as well as 34. The draw odds are pretty steep for Non-residents. While putting in for the draw 12% go to out of staters with a guide and 10% to out of staters without. 78% go to residents. With out a point system it may be one of the better states to draw a premium elk tag IF you are lucky enough to be one of the first applicants to get drawn.
