archery elk

If you were going after your first elk, would you try and take it with stick and string or rifle? I'd always put in the draw for rifle thinking my odds of killing one might be better (as understandable when comparing rifle hunting to bow hunting), but now I'm considering putting in for archery to help increase my odds of drawing the tag. My first obstacle here is getting the d*@!* tag! Would this be a mistake to put in for archery elk? I'm taling a DIY hunt here, in New Mexico.

well, your odds of getting either a rifle or archery LE Elk hunt is like .01 to .02 percent. Where are you wanting to hunt. Your probably better off just buying a point and plan your hunt for say......11 years in the future. Sucks but thats how it works. you ought to just get a spike tag and try bow or rifle and see if you like it.

Last I heard NM doesn't have points.

New Mexico does not have a point system.. We put in last year for archery elk non res and drew its a matter of Luck ... Put in and see what happens.
