Width doesn't matter?

I just read Oldoregons response to Tuffbucker' post and would like to hear other peoples opinion on width. I took a rack from a buck I harvested a couple years ago to the local sportsmans show this weekend in Puyallup, WA. to have it scored. It ended up making the Washington Book and scored 181 3/8 gross and 173 5/8 net typical, which is amazing to me seeing as how it has very short main beams, 21 5/8 and 19 1/8. The other reason I didn't think it would score that high is it only has a spread of 24 2/8. The one thing it does have going for it is mass, with just under 40". Now if it had a wider spread it really would have scored well. Don't get me wrong, it is a very nice looking typical and I am very proud of it but I just cant help thinking how nice it would have been. Still pretty good, grossing over 180 with those short mains. What do you all think?..............rf

WIDTH CAN ACTUALLY HURT YOU IF YOU AIN'T GOT THE MAIN BEAMS TO MATCH!!!

SOUNDS LIKE A NICE BUCK!!!

THE ONLY bobcat LOOKING FOR A NICE 'RACK'!!!

How is that? Wouldn't it be best if you had a buck with short mains but the mains points were the widest spread points? Now I'm really confused...........rf

I don't know how it was scored but for B&C, the only spread considered is the inside spread of the main beams. But.....only the amount equal to the length of the longest main bea. For example, if the inside spread is 20" and the longest main beam is 18", your number for spread would be 18". Spread can't hurt but extra spread doesn't help.

Huntnphool,
Sounds like a nice deer. Have you posted a picture of him yet?

Even if your deer had a 30" inside spread, the only spread credit it would get would be the length of the longest main beam. With a 24 2/8" outside spread I would guess that the inside spread of his main beams would be 20 to 22 inches so I would doubt that his overall score would be more than one or two inches higher if his spread was greater.
Wider bucks tend to score better because they normally have long main beams.

I am sure she was just being nice when she told you width didn't matter to her. j/k. sorry couldn't help it.

No I havn't, I will have to have my daughter hold it up for a pic.

You are correct though, it only scored 21 1/8 for spread..................rf
