40% less elk apps

I'll bet ya there were MORE apps this year. I know several people that were going to skip it because of the $$$, but then they heard the odds were going to be great so they ended up applying anyway.

If it is true, hopefully it is all nonresidents not at or near thr top pool realizing that with the 20% of tags going to the top pool combined with the 10% nonresident cap, they do not have a snowballs chance in hell fo drawing a primo tag until that stupid rule is changed. Why buy the license and pay application fees with zero chance at the best tags? Hopefully the loss of revenue will force a lower nonresident limit on the max points round, giving everyone a chance. I say cap the max points round to 2% nonresidents, so 20% of the nonresident tags go to max points holders.

I am one of the NR who decided it was a waste of my time and money until the rules are changed.

Even if there were a lot of hunters who felt that way, I still believe that the number of people especially non residence, did apply given the fee increases and bad odds. Hunting is a money game now days, and there are a lot of players.

I would be surprised at any drop, earlier apps true, but AZ apps have been increasing every year, and they are taking cc's, 10% drop would be the most I would expect.

I think many rumors are started by people talking about what they think might happen and the next thing you know it becomes a rumor of what did happen. I also think there were many people hoping with the price increases, effect of the 20% rule , and the new early elk application date, that a lower number of applications would be submitted. Until I see the Az. and Fish post the numbers I will chalk this rumor up as nothing more than wishful thinking.

As a nonresident I can say it is well worth the wait and hopefully the fish and game is using the extra license money to help manage the wildlife so they don't have to keep going up on the tags, that is handed over to them since it is mandatory now to buy the licenses and you don't have to apply for a premo tag we have gotten very nice bulls in in other units we have had 3 bull tags since 2000 so it does happen it might be 10 yrs. before my next one i'll keep applying, had they not gone to c.c.and online I think the percentages would be up their, good luck to all in the draw

I think we'll find the numbers were just about the same as last year. If it is down I would doubt it would be more than 10% at best. IMO.

Talk on another board is that a gal at G&F said there were 51,000 total elk and antelope apps this year, as opposed to 86,000 total last year. This would be a 40.7% reduction.

Well until the Az Game and Fish publishes official numbers I have serious doubts about what a gal at the game and fish says. On the other hand I hope what you are hearing is right Doug, I know I still will not draw an elk tag but maybe there is hope for my archery antelope???

Quote from Don Martin on Bowsite. Don knows his stuff:

"Talked with Leonard Ordway (AZ G & F Game Branch Chief) last night at the ABA banquet about this and unfortunately the number of apps for elk/antelope look to be close to the same as last year. They do not have all the information yet but 40% less this year is just a dream for all of us that put in for the drawing. They expected to lose some apps due to the early draw and tag fee increase but they did a good job of getting the word out about the early draw plus having the online apps available helped keep the application rate high."

Its all a Lie!!!! I thought it was to good to be true. So I called my buddies wife that works for game and fish's mesa az branch. She didn't know, so she made a few calls. There were 130,000 thousand combined applications for Elk and Antelope!!!! I had her repeat it 3 times to make sure. Oh well, will have to wait a few more years. Call the mesa branch and ask for Kathy if you don't believe me. I know how these forums go.

Why wouldn't anyone believe you? I do, afterall my friend's sister's boyfriend's dad's cousin's wife knows a lady who's son's girlfriend's aunt works at the G&F headquarters and she said the same thing!!!:)

It's Bush's fault!!!

2007 is 139138 total apps(102325 elk) and 2006 was 134088(102653 elk) These numbers are from the manager inside G&F.
