Dont really think you need an outfitter in that unit. Your major problem is that if it gets any snow what so ever, you are not going to get up there, and the elk tend to move out into either 38 or drop down onto private land. I would try and find some private land owners at the bottom of the mountain. I would also try and get in there first of the season if you are hunting public, very good archery unit, it can be awfully squirrely during rifle.

No. you can not bow hunt with that tag you need a type 9 tag. I would make sure you are there for the opener.I hunted that unit 4 years ago and by the time i got there the snow had started to pile up and most of the elk had dropped of into Montana.I saw a few elk ( lots of Moose ) the snow did not let up and i had to leave after 4 days.Good luck

Yes with a type 1 you can hunt with a bow but you have to start on the 15th of Sept. The type 9 tag gives you all of Sept. at least thats how it is for residents, and I would assume non-residents alike. definatly worth looking into great archery area weather permitting.

Unless the regs have changed,I believe Oilcan is correct. 38,39,40 are all units that you must draw type 9 to archery, which is unlike most of the units it the state where you can start on the 15th of Sept. If you have the type 1 you are stuck hunting when the rifle season opens.
The quality of bulls are good in the area, but can be a difficult hunt if weather comes in. With a 39-1 tag you can only hunt the rifle season, beginng Oct. 15th. If weather is good you will see plenty of elk and some good bulls, but plan on paking them out, not much access into the big drainages. Good Luck!

There is no special archery season for that area...only type 9 can archery hunt in Sept....just looked at the regs...
