Hello; My partner and I have 4 preferance points each for the Murder Creek area, my question is which side is better east or west, and where is a good place to access this area?
thanks
Your points are good for any elk hunt in Oregon so you aren't stuck with that unit if you want to move. both sides are good, west has access everwhere, east has pretty good access and the Strawberry wilderness area. I know the unit pretty well and I don't think one side is any better than the other, most of the east is a little harder hunting though.
Packer, are you a resident? I have 7 and my son 6 and I didn't think we could draw last year with 6 and 5. I was thinking we might burn them this year and Murderers creek was one unit I was considering. If I remember right, one side takes 1 more point.
Yes I'm a resident of Oregon, it was our original intent to gain perferance points for the Wenaha 256Y1 unit hunt. But both my partner and I figured we'd be in our 70's before we could draw that tag being that there are only 20 tags and 2152 applicants. I know of a guy that shot a beautiful bull up in the 340 caliber in the murder creek area last year with 4 points. So,that's why I was needing information about it. We have the camp the horses and mules and can go anywhere in the area.
It's all fair hunting and if you know where to look there's a few nice bulls but 340 type bulls are few and far between. elk numbers are down in most eastern Oregon units and Murderer's Creek is no exception, 15 cow hunts and lots of lions would be my guess.
Find another unit.
(1) You do not need horses in this unit, roads everywhere...
(2) TONS of people
(3)300 bulls are few and far between
(4)Oter choices to consider, Desilation, a place you could definatly use those four legged animals and some nice bulls.
,,,Or build your points for walla walla, just my opinion
I fyou want to hunt murderers creek use a bow better odss of killing a nice bull. Friend of mine has killed some really nice bulls down there just have to know where to look. Rifle season there are always nice bulls that come out many units. The bull that won the G.I.Joes bucks and bulls competion on ifish.net came out of murderers creek unit.
