Afternoon men. I've been invited to hunt Unit 76 near Creede, CO. I was just curious what kind of animals to expect. We'll be hunting mule deer. I've got another buddy who has 6 points for an elk tag and hopes to get drawn. Any GENERAL info. (best rifle hunt to put in fo)on the area would be appreciated.

I changed computers so I had to register again...bummer.

If I can help anyone with Texas, exotics, or whitetails in Mexico let me know.

Thanks!

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I already have an email in to Jeff a.k.a Deerking with Antler Quest regarding his services. I'm just looking to talk about the area so I can have something to dream about over the next 7 months...;)

Texashunter58, ColoradoHunter, Dutch, where are you fellas at?

DeerKing (El Jefe) and I have hooked up so I will be supporting the local Colorado economy for all you non-res haters...

Buhler.....Buhler.......Buhler...

Don't know anything about unit 76 except that it is supposed to be a good unit for elk. Sorry. I have heard that it has some great looking country too. Good luck.

Thanks TxHunter58,

Another buddy that is not going with us has 6 points for 76 and is going to try and get an elk tag. He said it's a great unit for elk. DeerKing (El Jefe) is going to send me a brochure with some more info. on Antler Quest. I'm really looking forward to hunting that part of the country.

What are your 2004 hunting plans? I'll be hunting whitetails in Mexico and then I'll have this Colorado mule deer hunt. We're expecting our first child, so I don't think I'll be able to sneak in a New Mexico antelope hunt and still stay married!

Best of luck.

Brady

I spend every day photographing elk in 76. Numbers are great
for elk. Bulls are good for Colo. Last fall we saw during rifle 600-800 everyday up to 100 bulls. Best 330. Bucks almost
none in fall. Summer fair. Much better for bucks over by
Silverton.

Thanks Rocketman,

Sounds like a heck of a unit for elk. The last part of your message said no bucks in the Fall. Did you mean you hardly see any mule deer bucks in the Fall? Just curious. The guy with the cabin had a road cut in to access it. The guy cutting the road said he's seen some good deer in the area. Thanks for the input.

BP,

Where in TX are you from? I was born and raised in New Braunfels and live in Lubbock now. Good luck in CO.

Sonora,

I'm from Victoria, TX, but now live and work in Austin, TX. Lubbock eh? You're either a die hard Red Raider or work has taken you to the dust bowl! I email with elk4you. Didn't you guys outfit some hunts in SEast New Mexico this year? How did they go?

In the summer I can go days without seeing a deer and see1-2000
elk. A few places I see a group of bucks 10-30 in number but only
in 1or2 places. In the fall I see no deer, they leave the high
country. Unit 76 is the highest unit in the west, low point
is 9000. They leave early in the area I am in.

Thanks Rocketman.

Maybe we'll have to shoot for the 1st season rifle or just look at another unit?

I suspect that deerking will tell you the same thing, most deer have left the high country by the first rifle season. Probably still be there in muzzleloading season, but for elk, residents need 5 points and nonresidents need 8 points to get drawn for that. Unless it is an unusually warm fall, the frost will have killed the best deer food up at 9000+ and the deer will move lower.

Well, if it ain't ol' Brady "THE GOOD AG" Anders all the way from Austin, Tejas. This is Songdog, a blast from your recent past.....I've been seeing your posts here on MM and will call you later if you haven't yet figured out who this is. I'll have some info about unit 76 to share with you. It's mostly about elk but it might lead into some good deer hunting in unit 76. Are you goin' huntin' with Curtis and his band of rowdy Giddings mule skinners????

Are you goin' to the RMEF Big Game Banquet next weekend?

Say Hi to Angela and hope to see ya soon!

GIG EM AGS!!!!

Songdog,

What's up fellow FM 620 resident? I hope you and the wife are well. I've had a lot going on that I'll brief you on when we speak. Some good some bad. Angela is great. She is due April 10, but I wouldn't be surprised to see us have the baby earlier.

Also, Deerking says you are going to be a client. I'm looking forward to seeing what his service is about. I've heard nothing but good things.

No dice on hunting with The Outlaw Curtis C. Sounds like a fun hunt in some pretty country.

Take care,

Brady

BP,

Hunts went well thanks for asking, its neat country out here. We did not kill some of the big antelope we had seen in late summer because the drought really had them scattered but we had a blast. If your ever up this way look me up.
