CO Elk with 3-5 points

I would love to shoot a decent 6x6 bull (to me, decent is what others would call a real pisscutter, something that scores 320 would be awesome to me). I am sure there are bulls like that in most units in CO if a guy gets lucky or scouts/hunts hard. But, I am wondering if there are any units where a guy could use 3-5 points to get a better chance at shooting a decent bull with a rife or blackpowder? I am not interested in trying to build points for 15-20 years to get a crack at a 380+ bull, I would rather have a decent chance a 300 bull every 5 years. I really appreciate any info, pm me if you would rather. Thanks again.

Your points are in the wrong state for the goals you have laid out in your post. Sure there are 300 bulls in most units of co. but your odds are miniscule at best that you are to be the hunter that takes one that big. Raise that # to 320 and it increases exponentially that you will fail. I Know a guy that burned 13 pts last year and shot the biggest bull he saw at the tail end of the season and it would not have broken 300". If you consider a chance at suceeding to be 1% or so then by all means you have a chance. Most hunters in Co will hunt their whole lives and never see a 320 bull during the season.

Aw Man, all I wanted was a little "pisscutter" :) You wouldn't think it would be so hard.

Maybe I will only send CO $300 instead of $800 this year. Thanks for the info.

Didn't mean to piss on your parade but you do the math on the post hunt bull to cow ratios and the in depth (mature bulls per 100 cows) ratio then figure that a 31/2 yr bull is probably 75% of the mature bull figure and you are talking no more than 1 or 2 6pt bulls per 100 cows in most units- most 6pts are going to be 280 class bulls. If you narrow it down to better than average units and pack in 5 miles to set up camp you dramatically increase yoiur odds especially if you are willing to go m/l and hunt the rut. Believe me it can be done but probably not by the average hunter dan. Pm me if I haven't discouraged you adequately I'll try to steer you in the right direction.

That's a tall order. I've seen plenty of bulls that top the 300 mark in Colorado, but none in areas you can touch with 3 to five points. You might try some ranching for wildlife programs, or pay to hunt on private land. If you've got 3-5 points then you are 3-5 points ahead of me.

I wouldn't burn them yet.
In the units I archery hunt in it's OTC and I've found
bulls that score well. The highest is around 340 class but most of
your 6 points around the 280-300 mark.
But I've had better luck finding these bigger bulls during
archery. After a few shots and they head to the private and no one
up there allows hunting.
The biggest bull I did see last year he would go somewhere around
360 but he was on private so I really don't count him as a
huntable elk.He was the big boy of the herd he was in of about 150 elk all on private.Still good to see them bulls though.
