Need a guide in Unit 10!!!!

Well, if you're buying one of the landowner tags for 10, you might be able to forgo the cost of outfitter and simply ask the landowner. Try to emulate the feed truck, maybe.

If you are buying one of the welfare tags that the guides get, let them guide you. The state is giving them commerce for crying out loud. The least they can do is take your money as well and give you a hand...sheesh!

If nothing else, get yourself a four-wheeler and do some vigorous "scouting" during the archery deer season. You may locate one. Thats what a lot of the elk tag holders do around these parts.

Good luck with that whole area 10 trophy thing. There is plenty of guides to around up here, believe me.

I would for sure look at the guys that produce Awsome Bulls Videos. Mclenden(sp) and sons. I know they have a good handle on were the good bulls are in that unit. In there videos some of those monsters came from there. Just a thought

Sent you a PM. What ever you decide make a decision soon as the best guides get booked first. Chappell and Scott guide service:

I 3rd the Don Martin pick, I would hunt with him in a heart beat.Top notch outfit he goes the extra mile.

McClendon or Chappell & Scott both seem to pretty good and you probably wouldn't be unhappy with either one.

An interesting note is that Mossback is in AZ now too. Their main guys in AZ are pretty psycho and have taken some nice bulls out of 10. http://www.mossback.tv/Schedule_a_Hunt/MossBack_Arizona/mossback_arizona.html

The main problem you are going to have no matter who you go with is finding a big bull that isn't broken during the late hunt. Congrats.

You might try Randy Barnes or even USO outfitters if the others are booked.

Maybe I'm not getting it, but landowner tags in 10? Or even in AZ for that matter? Sounds like there might be some soured grapes here somewhere, no? Guides getting welfare tags and then in turn are allowed to sell them to clients? WTF? I've lived in this fine state for 34 years now and I've never heard of the stuff you're talking about. Quads on the west half side of unit 10 on the Boquillas will get you lynched too!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-25-07 AT 09:59PM (MST)[p]JimNV, are you talking about unit 10 AZ or unit a 10 in another state?

Another recommendation for Chappell and Scott in unit 10. They will find the big ones! Check out their new Extreme Bulls 4 video...several hunts from that area on the video...

Corey

Yeah, that video is great. Chappell does a really good job of filming. I like McClendon too, either one of those outfits would be excellent.

Check out Arizona Trophy Guide Service, out of Williams. I know they have a website, but I dont know the address. They live in and hunt that unit year around.

Is that ethical?

I KNOW ALOT OF GUYS ARE NOT REAL HAPPY WITH USO. THEY REALLY DID PUT ON SOME QUALITY HUNTS IN 2006 FOR A COUPLE OF GROUPS THAT I KNOW. I HAD FOUR FRIENDS TAKE BIGTIME ELK & DEER WITH THEM, TWO OF THE ANIMALS BOOKED. THEY STATED THEY WOULD RE-BOOK WITH THEM AGAIN, FIRST CLASS HUNTS THEY SAID. I PICKED A DIFFERENT OUTFITTER.....YD.

That may be the case YD. But I as a hunter can't support any outfitting service that goes into multiple states demands tags, and threatens legal action, and in many cases took the states to court to get more tags. Then opened up the landowner tag issue got access taken away on private lands for just their clients many had hunted until they filled the landowners hands with $$$ in many states, increased the costs of tags to residents and nonresidents alike as a direct result of their actions and lawsuit costs. Hell we even had to get a federal law passed just to stop these clowns across the west. They have hurt hunting in every state in which they've cast their wake and most residents hate them! They had little regard for hunting just a ongoing love affair with their wallets. Your an OK guy in my book YD but I have nothing but disdain for them.

McClendon, Don Martin both are top notch outfits put on a good hunt. There were a couple of other good alternatives suggested as well.

BOSKEE, I DID NOT HUNT WITH THEM. SOME FRIENDS OF MINE DID, ITS NOT ABOUT ME.....I'M JUST THE MESSENGER. I WILL GO WITH A DIFFERENT GUIDE WHEN THE TIME COMES AS WELL. ----YD.

Gregg Krogh is an awesome guide and outfitter! He has guided Randy Ulmer for quite some time now. His outfit is Mogollon Rim Outfitters. Even though I am a guide in Az I would recomened him!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-31-07 AT 02:34AM (MST)[p]Blackknight, you have some solid advise here.
McClendon & Sons, AWO, Chappell/Scott, these organizations have reputations that speak for themselves.

The problem with recommending USO, other then the lawsuit, tag grab thing, is that they are booking agents with a reputation for booking lots of hunts. Most of these hunts are farmed out. I'm sure they farm out hunts to the best outfitters they can find, but if they can't find a good one, you get stuck with what's left. With the above mentioned outfits, you can count on their reputations, but with USO, they might book fifty Arizona elk hunts. The first 25 might get real good outfitters, and the next 15 might get an ?OK? hunt, but those last 10 hunters could get stuck with a fly by night operation and a lousy hunt.
You?ve got a great tag, if you're going to spend the money on an outfitter, get the best one you can find.

Anaconda-USO guides their hunts themselves. People draw tags thru USO's liscence service and they USUALLY hunt with USO. USO has hunted unit 10 for many many years. Back in the late 90's they were killing some HUGE bulls on the late hunt. But now that the flying is outlawed their success has gone way down. It is not uncommon at all for USO to have 25-30 hunters in unit 10 at one time! At the same time they will have 30-40 hunters in unit 8 and 5b usually around 10 hunters they will also have 20-30 hunters in 27 and around 15-20 in unit 1 all on the same week. George applies nearly 5,000 hunters into the draw. Almost all hunters are guided by USO guides, the problem is, many of the guides don't have much experience in that unit or elk hunting for that matter. But with that many hunters it is only a numbers game and they will produce some big bulls from time to time. Two yrs ago, I was guiding unit 10, George had 31 hunters staying in Seligman. On the fourth day, they killed the first bull, the bull was HUGE. I think it scored around 380. It was sh$ house luck! They were driving back to town at 8:30am and the bull, along with two others came running out into the flats near Robbers Roost. The hunter got out and shot the biggest bull. You can bet, that the bull is in their brochure but not the story. I used to work for USO 6 yrs ago, I trained MANY "rookies" how to elk hunt enough to keep George from returning money, I worked for him for 7 years. If a person does book with USO, they may get an excellent guide, who knows the unit and is an excellent elk hunter. BUT the chances of getting a rookie are even greater. Two years ago, when I was there last, I did not recognize ONE SINGLE guide! But then one the other hand I did not see them in the field, they did not know as much of the unit as I do. This is a tag of a persons lifetime, research the outfitter and ask to talk to UNSUCCESFUL clients befor making a decision!
