LAST EDITED ON Mar-26-07 AT 01:03PM (MST)[p]Looking to take my son on his last youth hunt this year. Studied the draw odds for NR w/o guide (youth) in New Mexico and both 16C and 16E are very drawable. Don't want to get into a access problem if we draw like mostly private/landlocked, etc. Could I get some info on access into these units. I have horses so accessing elk shouldn't be a problem. Just don't want to run into a situation where I can't access public land.

Any input on the best choice of these 2 and 15 muzzy for youth would be appreciated.

i personly would go 16c first and 16e second choice, i like 16c it is a nice area e is pretty good too though, and easier to draw

I'm not sure where you are getting your draw odds info, but I think the only 16 units open for youth last year were 16A and 16D and both of these were 50 antlerless tags. This year 16C and 16E are open for 25 either sex youth tags. that means only 2 or 3 NR - non-guided tags. I think the odds will be a lot tougher for these ES tags. NM did make a lot more ES tags available this year in many units compared to last year though.

I have been spending a lot of time trying to figure out an application strategy for my two sons as well.

I applied for my son too. Any of the tags they are offering for the either sex tags would be great for my son. If you have horses you will be able to access some great areas.

These are new units your talking about for these hunts Like stated above, so odds cant be studied.

My son and I will be pacing the floor until the middle of June. Its a longshot but someone has to draw right???

I hunted 16E 13 days last year. Access is tough. Saw elk but only 1 bull that would even come close to 300 - that was doing LOTS of glassing and walking about 6-7 miles a day. Lots of cows and raghorns. Mostly all out in the flats - didn't see much up in the PJ like you would expect. I'd stick to the other youth hunts if I were you...just my 2 cents.

I checked those 2 hunts on huntodds.com and the draw odds were 10X's better than the following, later hunt. Are those stats skewed? Were they Mobility inpaired the previous year instead of youth? Did I get excited over nothing? HELP!!!!

Hey Cali 10% of the tags go to NR unguided and 12% of the tags go to NR guided. Do the math unguided will get around 5 tags and guided should get around 6 tags, overall that is 11 tags to NR's. Not the biggest number, but still decent for kids to hunt in the rut! 16C is an outstanding unit, if drawn, 320+ should be the min.

i would definately go 16c...majority of which is nat'l forest land, therefore easy access...good luck to your son on the draw

There wasnt either sex hunts for the youth last year in those Units. Not sure what odds your looking at.
