I saw this mule deer at kings outdoor world that said it is a potential world record, netting 229 7/8. Has anyone heard anything?

p.s. Go to the image library if you would like to see it.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-22-04 AT 02:18PM (MST)[p]Believe this...........if there was a potential new worlds record deer hanging on a wall somewhere we would all have heard about it. It's not that hard to enter it and the word would be out immediately.

JB

A guy named Lee Spurgeon killed it a long time ago.
Lee is dead now, so his buddy Kirt Darner tried to enter it as the New Worlds Record.
Unfortunatley Kirt Darner had a big falling out with B&C and they refuse to accept it.
The Burris Buck is still#1

Number 1 is Number 1 to me. I think the lee buck is number 1, albeit, not by much.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-22-04 AT 06:36PM (MST)[p]I believe B&C would accept it if someone other than Kirt Darner would enter it as a pickup. I know alot of you don't agree with that but they don't accept animals from someone that has a "questionable" past with them. Please don't start in on me about his past........

JB

I am wondering why they mounted it with a whitetail cape...hahaha. I have always liked the look of that buck. Sweeping mains, deep backs you can see from the front view. wow

The Burris Buck has been re-mounted several times.
It is now owned by Cabelas and done lifesize in one of their retail outlets.

HH,

Any idea what cabelos paid for it?? Or what Doug Burris got for it when he first sold it?

JB

Yes,
there is the complete story posted on this site titled "Lees meat buck" depicts the story of the "Potential World Record"

i think you guys have it wrong. Kirt had it scored by a couple different official b&c dudes. just to make sure it was big enough to be the world record. he never even tried to enter it. he said that the guy that killed it, willed it to him and his wishes were that it not be entered because he thought record books were bs. he said that he always assumed that it was the world record but that Lee refused to even allow it to be scored, much less entered. but when he croaked he gave it to Kirt. and he also said he just wanted b&c to know that he owned the world record so they could sweat a little over what they will do if he does put it in their book. he told me this himself. i thought it was kinda funny. wonder what them goatee bearded, turtle neck wearin', pipe smokin' purty boys at b&c head quarters would do if all the sudden Kirt insisted the new world record be entered and be entered with him as the owner. what a dilemna.......

when it comes to Kirt, there ain't never any clarification. poor guy has a hell of a reputation to live down, and it ain't his doin' either. too much BS out there about the guy. but one thing is for sure, that is one huge buck. and cool looking too. most of the 220"+ bucks i've shot were all a little plain lookin'.

nice picture and short story in Sports Afield. There was a story in another mag recently also.

Hey RLH, can you give me a quick run down on Darners trials and trivia? I grew up looking at him and his bucks in Outdoor Life, Sports Afield and whatever, as there were no "Trophy Hunting" mags back then. Anyhow, I was always fascinated with him and read every word he had to say for years. When all the chit hit the fan I was detached from the "news" I guess and am still in the dark about what the controversy is about. Could you tell me?

Thanks,

Ernie

PS....I ALWAYS remember one line I read in an article he wrote Many years ago. I dont know it word for word, but he was talking about using binoculars to locate deer and he said something to the effect that when most people glass a hillside it looks like they are watching a low flying hawk glide in front of them. I always laugh my ass off when I think of that, cause he's so right!

Yeah RLH, Fill us in on how he was railroaded by those pipe smoking fools at B&C.

JB

Ernie, I remember that line too and he was dead right. I still think of that while watching some guys glass standing up with their elbows in the air.

JB

dang guys, don't know if i'm up for that kinda abuse again. remember last time? some guy was callin' me all kindsa names. ok, here goes a condensed version. Kirt shot a buck sometime in the 70's. it's the one on the cover of his first book. some other guy shot a buck in the 40's that is very similar. when i first saw it, i thought he had done wrong too, but have since proven to myself otherwise. there photos of it in the NRA magazine back then. a guy named householder, here in Az., saw the photos and notified b&c. turns out the buck from the 40's had been stolen from siever's taxidermy in phoenix. so they decided that somehow Kirt had aquired the stolen rack. the older buck had been officially scored and entered in the book, so there was a record of it. Kirt's buck is wider and has more points. he has photos of the caped out front quarters, with the antlers still attached to the skull, in the back of a pickup that was made in the 70's. these photos were taken way before all the computer generation crap that can be done now. i've had one for about 15 years. the guy that used to own the rack in question, told me, to my face, not 3rd hand, that the original buck had been dropped and the skull plate had been broken and repaired with fiberglass. Kirt's rack has never been repaired. Kirt's rack was taken by an indepenent party the the university of Arizona and the premier authority of carbon-14 dating tested it. said it was alive at the time Kirt said he shot it. absolutely did not live in the 40's. oh yeah, and did i mention that the guy, householder, that started all this crap likes to take pictures of naked little girls and also snuck into a morgue to take nude pictures of a little girl that was raped and murdered in a cotton field down here? he was arrested and convicted of this crap and it cost the county coroner his job before that one was over. anyway, b&c still saw fit to throw Kirt's buck out of the book. didn't stop there. they threw out a desert bighorn that he shot when he lived in Az. in the 60's. some game warden named jett got on the case an found that the Az. game and fish, not Kirt, improperly filled out the required paper work on the sheep. so they tossed the sheep too. what the problem was, when he took the sheep to the office for inspection, the only person there was a female clerk and the paper work was supposed to be filled out by a game warden. whatever. then they threw out a coues deer he shot in the 60's too. he didn't get it scored until sometime in the 80's. scored big too. they said it was a texas whitetail and threw it out too. no dna or anything was ever done, just chunked it because this jett guy said too. ok, now go back and look at the evidence. who's side is it on? especially on the big muley. and then think about these things. he's shot many bucks larger than the one in question. why would he risk putting it on the cover of a very popular book? anyway, you can see what i mean. well, Kirt got his hump up and got a lawyer and all that. didn't do any good. lost his clothing line in cabela's. lost a bunch of other endorsements. figures it cost him close to a million bucks in lost revenue from things. so he told b&c to take all his stuff outta the books. there was a bunch too. not just deer. he's taken all kindsa record heads. the guys is a hunter. they wouldn't do it, so he sued em and made em do it. they didn't do it because they wanted to, like all the rumors are, they did it because he made them. he told me that he was trying to develop a scoring system that gave animals credit for all the mass that they carried and felt that what happened to him was partly in retaliation for that. but he's held his head high through all of it. he ain't afraid to go out in public or any of that stuff. he ain't embarassed by, just pissed. and, unlike all the other rumors, until he got busted a couple years ago for letting a client shoot at a cow elk out of his truck (turned out it was a mounted elk. it's kinda funny really) he had never been cited for a game violation. Kirt is a pretty down to earth guy. and a real good hunter. people get jealous i guess. since all this crap he's shot a half dozen or so huge mule deer that would make b&c. and a bunch more that any of us would be thrilled with. oh well, the sun still came up this morning. and no, his ex wife didn't turn him in and get him in a bunch of trouble. him and Paula have been married for probably 30 years. he has an ex-wife, but that was a long time ago. hope you guys read with an open mind. later.

RLH you are right on about the story. I'm sure you will hear a bunch about how that isn't so and how he did this and that, I would rather be hunting with Kirk then the others you mentioned.

LEE;s Meat Buck is the world record, It do not matter if someone puts it in the BC book or not, you can't take the amount of horns off this bucks head.

Thanks RLH.

He definitely has put it to some trophy heads in his day! Has he killed any/many big bulls? Must have, but I've never heard tale of it?

Thanks again,

Ernie

I wish one of the "Trophy" magazines would have the nuts to do an interview with Kirt Darner and bring out the truth!
If all is like you say, It would be great to have him back in the spotlight,as he is undoubtedly in incredible hunter that we all could learn from!
I have been intrigued by Kirt and his successes since the mid eighties when I bought his book.(I still read it from time to time)
I too had heard all the rumors and had never spoken with anyone that had known him personally.
RLH,Thanks for taking the time to try to clear things up!
I should have clarified in my photo post that the "Burris Buck" is the world record according to B&C.
It would be very frustrating to have Lee's buck and to have the rest of the world going on about the Burris Buck, knowing that your late friend is the real record holder.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-25-04 AT 10:02AM (MST)[p]Kirt needs to move to Kanab and get convicted of a few felonies. That would get him back in the fold with open arms.

some months back i posted the same stuff and got in a runnin' gun battle with some guy. can't remember who it was. he said he was an orificial b&c scorer and that he had the real story. said something about Kirt trying to enter a jaguar skull as a mt lion. if he'da done that, lacey woulda been all over him. i know for a fact Kirt never shot a lion until sometime in the 90's. way after all this bs started. last october i had all i could take from a know it all sob from tucson and took him to the ground after he called me a liar. oh well. harry is right, it'd be cool for someone to interview him and put it all out there for us to read. don't know if Kirt would do it. took em a long time to convince him to let em do the carbon-14. he was afraid he'd never get the rack back. by the way, isn't carbon-14 like the silver bullet, vice-grip, lead pipe cinch, cast in stone, most holy of all scientific proof? and it ain't good enough for b&c?!?! i got pissed at em when i was just a kid over a bear that shoulda been then and would still be the world record. way before i know Kirt. it's their club and they say who can join. that's why i just hunt. screw books. big is big. and sometimes little is pretty cool too. i do think it's cool for him to sorta wag "Lee's Buck" in their faces tho.

RLH,

If I was ever in trouble I would hire you to be my defense lawyer and you are one loyal friend. I think you've been suckered a little but damn your good at standing your ground.

JB

how ya figger i've been suckered? i know Kirt for zakly what he is. in the case of him vs. the b&c, he was right. proved that to myself and i can be quite critical when it comes to right and wrong. not gonna make any judgements in any other areas of the man's life.

Ya know RLH, I wish I knew Darner as well as you do. Come to think of it I wish I knew you personally too. I like it when I guy isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes.

thanks RLH for the info on kirt darner...i've always heard rumors, but you sound like you know...i had the privilege, and i do mean privilege, of meeting him on april 11, 1986 at a show he did in spokane, washington. i would definitely pay money anyday to go and hear him speak again. the things i learned from him will be with for all my hunting days...i had the pleasure of taking his picture in front of the world record non-typical 'broder buck', which by pure chance, also happened to be at the show. i sent him a copy, and he later published it in his book 'Hunting The Rockies'..i think it's great that he has what is probably the world's record...and doesn't try and enter it in the book..i've never been much on 'the book', but i sure do enjoy looking at pictures of big bucks. below is a pic i am sure many of you have seen the heads of before, but this is how kirt presented them when he came to washington, 18 years ago...

nvbighorn and littlefoot, if you met me you'd probably be dissapointed. just a beat up old guy with his best days behind him. i'm living vicariously through my sons now. never been much of a trophy hunter, but will shoot the biggest one in the bunch, unless he leaves too soon. sort of a mistake i ever even got to know Kirt. he's ok tho. and all BS aside, he's a hunter. anyone who says he ain't is just wrong. he's been in some embarassing situations, which i find sorta funny. i just get sorta get smoked when people start slingin' around what amount to be just lies, when i know better. i know a half dozen or so guys on the same shelf as Kirt. he just happens to be famous. just about everyone of em has cost himself at least one marriage, hundreds of thousands of dollars, and lots of pain and misery to get to where they are. hope it's all worth it. there's a big difference between being a hunter and a guy who hunts. most of the even real famous guys you see on tv and who have books and magazines are just guys who hunt. if you're in the phx. area, let me know. we'll go have some barbecue.

I was just thinking you might keep things interesting in some situations. Like in a room full of BSers' or enviros. Beat up old guys :) are always fun to have around to stir things up. If I am ever in the Phoenix area I'll buy.
