Holy Cross Colorado

Hi I have enough points to draw a Holy Cross early rifle hunt, which would start the second week in September. I would like to backpack in, however I am leary of going alone. I am in good shape and know how to backpack, but would worry about getting hurt and being food for the buzzards.

Maybe I could rent a satalite cell phone???

I've hunted there a few times. Many areas where your regular cell phone can get service. If you go the second weekend in September you'll be a week late....

never hunted it before, but i have been up the old jeep road to holy cross city. popular area for 4x4 enthusiasts. sounds like your hunt might fall around labor day weekend-in which case i would bet your going to have some traffic up that road. thats not really a bad thing, IMO, just letting you know they'll be there. not sure where in there you're planning to hunt, but it is beautiful country. if you like the paint on your huntin rig, i woulnd't suggest that road as an access. unless of course you're into that sort of thing, then it is a fun trail.

There is alot of areas that you could trailhead camp and day hunt out without much concern about being to remote on a daily basis. It is very steep from any starting point. Those dates really are bad with Labor Day falling how it does this year with 3 bigtime days of tourist and last wknd of the summer crowd being out and everywheres. Maybe look towards some of the later Nov. western slope rifle buck hunts like 44 or 21-30 or maybe even 61.
