Wow, do we ever have a dilemna on our hands. I just got off the phone with a good hunting buddy of mine, and he hadn't checked the Arizona website to see if he'd drawn an elk tag. So, we went on there, and went nuts for a bit, as he drew an elk tag with 8 points! He had applied for 3A/3C and 22 south muzzleloader, and we were stoked while looking up the hunt number to see what unit he drew. BUT.......he drew 3B archery bull. What the bleep happened?! WTF is a major understatement.

We have a couple problems. First, my buddy is very experienced with a muzzleloader, but he doesn't bow hunt, and he's 63. Second, I know units 9 and 5B south pretty well, but I've never hunted unit 3B, and he's never drawn Arizona elk at all, until this happened.

We have a lot of learning to do and fast. If I recall correctly, this unit was burned badly about 3 years ago, and runs from Snowflake all the way down to the rez boundary at Pinetop. Does anybody know anything about elk hunting in this unit? I'm not looking for any places to hunt now, just general observations is all. He didn't apply for this weapon type or unit, so we're going to call AZGFD on Monday to figure out what happened. In the meantime, we're wondering what he has in his hand.

If he has a print out of his application they will change it. Either he made a mistake or they did. Hopefully it was them.

Greg, yes I got it, Thank you very much! I really appreciate the help a lot. I'm determined to help my buddy get a nice bull, and we're going to hunt the entire season. First priority for him is to start shooting his bow again, which will start in a day or two behind his barn. He's going to start at only 45 lbs. and work up from there. Goal is to get him to 55 pounds, which should be plenty with the right broadhead.

Thanks for the help!

3B is a great unit. Lots of 330-350 class bulls with some special ones from year to year. 3B didn't get burned during the Rodeo-Chediski fire. Most of the southern end of the unit is ponderosa pine. He will have lots of opportunity and there are plenty of places to hunt with low hunting pressure. Congrats on a great tag!

yeah what happened ? was it the g&f or your buddy's mistake ? I had them mess my son and I up three times in 5 years- so I know a little about this type of mess. just curious what happened ? thanks !
