AZ has decided to open up the OTC deer hunt to coincide with the archery elk hunt. What a joke. Wait many years to draw a good elk tag then find out there will be unlimited deer hunters sharing the tanks, woods and mountains with you. I would be pissed.

moman,
are you serious.how did you find this out?that would be up to par with the lame brain moves az game and fish has pulled over the last few years.

well,
its true!!i just got off the az game and fish web page and they are considering setting the archery deer hunt to overlap the archery elk hunt by 6 days!!if you have any arizona archery elk tag or even care about the quality of the archery hunts i think az game and fish needs to hear from us.i live in williams and see first hand how many archery deer hunters are out there and guess what archery elk hunters you would not only be sharing the area for 6 days but guess what else>>>>water sorces<<<<<<<< yuck!!!!oh yeah i want to wait 10 years to draw a primo arizona elk tag then have archery deer hunters and their quads running all over..not sure what the thought process is here????the archery deer hunt has always ended the day before the archery elk hunts????time to get everyone on your e-mail lists to e-mail az game and fish about this.there is a comment link on the bottom of there web page.
and if you dont think this will add undue pressure get this:
in unit 10 2004 there were 880 archery deer hunters spending 3899 days afield

in unit 8 2004 there were 585 arhery deer hunters spending 2707 days afield

in unit 7 2004 there were 1025 archery deer hunters spending 4783 days afield.

i think you get the point.time to speak up!!

That sucks!!

Last year on my bow bull tag it was bad enough with all the bow cow hunters calling and getting photo's of the bulls that I can just imagine having a bunch of bow buck hunters calling and filming the big bulls while a bow elk hunter is trying to harvest!!!

But then again where I have to buy a license just to apply... might not be to bad to be there during the bow bull dates with an archery deer tag in my hand... scout out alot of units while chasing a buck......

Man that does suck!...what a dumb arse I am...I applied for points this year for my son and I....I think ill skip it next year!

The more I think about the BS a hunter has to go thru now a days for a good tag, and then G&F screws it up! A guy is almost better off cutting the neighbors grass all summer and just go to NM and buy a dam tag.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-10-07 AT 10:22AM (MST)[p]If passed...All the people that drew Archery Elk Tags in Arizona are probably going to have a much lower success and dis-satisfying hunt in Arizona. It's a shame that such as hard tag to draw will have people running all over your area looking for deer, driving quads, sharing tanks, and scaring all the elk back into the thickets. Something needs to be done to stop this or archery elk in Arizona will suck forever.

Anybody have a good contact e-mail or number for the commissioners or anyone else who will listen? Let's steer our venting and frustration where it counts.....the commission's lap.

we just need to speak up....sqeeky wheel gets the grease.at the bottom of the arizona game and fish web page is a comment link.we just need to let them know this is not a good choice and to just move the otc deer hunt close back to its normal close date the day before the archery elk hunts.otherwise your right these hunts will be way less enjoyable.

I just posted my comments...Does anyone know if they had regional meetings before these came out. I usually attend but I was unaware of any of the meetings.

Also, they shortenend the Statewide lion season by 3 months. Some of you might not see this as a big deal but AZ G&F is playing right into the ANTI'S hands. This season only makes it tougher on ranchers & lion hunters to take lions during this time period. Watch out guys the ANTI'S take little bitty bites but soon they want every state to be just like California.

Hey fella's, check the General Hunting forum. "CouesKiller" posted that AZGFD will be having a meeting TONIGHT at 6:00 pm. I believe it's at the Flagstaff office off of lake Mary road. I sent a comment as well. I was surprised that they let me type as many words as I did. If you guys can't make it please send your comments

GentleBen!

What a bunch a whiner's!
Just boycott the damn thing/demand refunds/put a stop order on your checks/cancel with your credit card company etc. and when they realize their herd ratios are all out of whack...they will re-think ever doing this again especially this late in the game. Remind them it's a free country and you will take your tourism dollars elsewhere in the future. This is exactly why I won't hunt the finnicky state of Assizona. Otherwise, shut up, show up, kill your bull and make sure to shoot a buck just out of spite. Just kidding on the last comment by the way. Give'em hell. -CB-

craigs,
they had a meeting in flag tonight i found out at 6:00 meeting statred at 6:00.strange that they have all our e-mail address but we dont hardly hear about meetings?crested-no whining if you have ever hunted bull elk in az you would know why the concern!!our elk hunting is #1 bar none.but its hard enough to bow kill any elk with just the pressure from the other archery elk hunters let alone a ton of over the counter deer hunters.i am guessing this bright move is to keep the harvest down without having to cut the tags and lose revenue.(extra archery hunters more pressure)

just keep the e-mails flowing to az game and fish they hear us..

thanks

I sent in my comments earlier today. Please remember, no matter how much you want to point out how low their IQ has to be for this, you'll be heard more clearly if you state your opposition and the reasons behind it politely and in a manner relevent to the subject.

ca,
definitely need to be pertinent to the subject and not call anyone a "tard" just thought that was funny.there has to be a little lighthearted humor about this so nobody blows a gasket.

This will be brought up at the April 21st commission meeting and the commission will have the oppurtunity to change the dates. This is a "social" issue and not a "biological" issue so your input will be important. Please come to the meeting if you can and voice your opinion. If you cannot be there send your e-mails and voice mails!

Every meeting I have been to is a bunch of pontificating BS by kids right out of the Toastmasters course. If the department expects a bunch of support from us on habitat so they can get matching funds and to help every year when the legislature trys to take control then they need to think a bit harder on the impact of foolish decisions. Who thinks this stuff up? Have they ever archery hunted in their lives? How many hunters can a water hole take in september? They have the lakes all screwed up so now must have time to mess with hunting. Keep biting that hand that feeds and see what it gets them.

Good grief, I hope they do something about this. I'm a NR who has already plunked down the cash for the AZ OTC archery deer tag (for a January coues hunt). My resident cousin drew a Unit 8 bull tag that I'm planning to tag along on. Certainly would be fun to pack my bow since I've already got the tag, but I'd much rather help out with a kick a$$ elk hunt without the crowds even if that means I don't get to hunt myself.

I've never hunted those units up north in AZ...do the deer and elk generally occupy the same terrain? Here in WA, the best deer and elk areas generally do not overlap. I hunted the Gila in NM last year for elk. We saw tons of elk, a few bears, some pronghorns, some turkeys, even a wolf, but I didn't see a single deer. I saw the post above with the number of hunters and hunting days in the AZ units...are the deer hunters generally hunting the same spots within the units as the elk hunters? I suppose where water is scarce, maybe so. Just curious...would love to get the input from those guys that spend a lot of time in the sweet AZ elk units.

Not to be the bear of bad news, but unit 8 is an absolute zoo during the deer hunt. There are spots to get away from people, but i would say it is one of the more crowded units in noaz when it comes to archery deer hunting in the fall. This rule needs to be fixed or else there are going to be some crazy stuff going on.

a "zoo" would be putting it lightly.if they don't change this overlap its going to awefull to say the least.i live in williams and see it first hand can you say"quads" i guess now its can you say "rhinos"i guess thats ok if you want to deal with that on the otc archery hunt but mixed together with the archery elk hunts argh!!to answer the question deer and elk areas do overlap where i live you will see elk and deer in the same meadows.you can loose people in 8 but you better have mules or be in awesome shape.lets just keep the e-mails to az game and fish flowing flowing.

I hope we can get a big turnout at the meeting. At least every elk tag holder should go and deer hunters too as far as I am concerned. Some of the units up north will be a big joke and all hunters will suffer from this d'arse decision.

Keep sending your comments!! This overlap should be an easy fix, on the 21st let them know archery deer should run from 8/24-9/13 and that should do it....

Email sent, thanks BBB.

Don't know if us NR can influence this issue also, but I sent my opinion on it,and stated that if they pursued this, that I would start spending my $$$$ on other states, and draws.

No Gut's...No Story!!!

You bet Non-residents can make a difference when we are buying 150$ licences just to play the game....not to mention 600$ tags. We are major constituents. With that said, I was told by one of AZGFD Media contacts that the commission boards doesn't seem to acknowledge the non-residents much and are more willing to listen to the resident public, but they also know they would hurt financially without non-resident revenue....just like any other high-quality western state.

Here is my comment I sent. Whaddya think? This is win-win for everyone as long as they don't shorten the normal OTC season to accomodate.

"As to the overlap of the OTC archery deer/turkey season to archery elk, I'm torn. I like the idea of hunting both species at the same time, but also do not want OTC tag only holders to be competeing with me in the woods for water sources, feeding sources, and just adding that many people to the woods during may hard drawn elk hunt. How about making elk tag holders allowed to also hunt deer and/or turkey during the elk hunt with their OTC's, but OTC only tag holders season to not overlap the drawn elk season? In other words, stop the normal archery OTC season before the elk season, but allow drawn elk hunters OTC's to be extended through and during their elk hunts. This would get you some of the results you want for herd numbers but still allow us to have a quality hunt during archery elk season!Archerman - Archery hunting addict!"

FYI,
I did not attend but have been told that the deer archery season will end on Sept. 13th due to many concerns by the public....good job guys!!!

The comittee voted to start the archery hunts a week early and to allow the deer hunts to end the day before archery elk opens. Also archery turkey will follow the same lines. They also cut some of the kaibab tags they added and moved it back to its original dates. They also decided to make lion closed between june and august. I agree with everything game and fish did except for the lion closure. In my opinion it is just the begining of another California incident.

az,
your right on target."give a foot take a mile"there is no reason for the lion change.this should tell us all to watch closely the ideas of the game and fish departments.truly, hunters in the field are the best indicators of what is going on with our wild life.look at what just happed with the archery deer hunts we all came together and they listened.the problem i see with the lion hunting is most of the hunters taking to the field are not real serious about harvesting a lion so, it takes a little more effort and info for them to see what needs to happen with management vs someone who say.. runs lions with dogs.

....in god i trust..................................

The lion season closure was developed, initiated, written and backed by lion hunters not the anti's.

muley,
that was the point of my coment about most hunters-that would be me. i dont activly persue lions so unless someone who hunted lions alot told me about an issue with hunting or management of them i would not have a clue.short of i know what happens when you stop managing them.what was the reason for the closure months?
averagejoe

Kittens are being born at this time and this will protect them. There is very little lion hunting going on at this time for that reason so it made sense to cut a potential loss early. The antis have screamed about it for years and in reality they were right so we corrected it, not them.

Well it is illegal to shoot a lion that has kittens or kittens for that matter. I know there are people out there that do not respect the laws and will shoot a lion with kittens. We just need to go out and start punishing the ones that do. I know that means more man power but that is a price we have to be willing to pay to ensure that lion hunts in AZ stay!

>The lion season closure was developed,
>initiated, written and backed by
>lion hunters not the anti's.
>

Well then, how come they told the commission on Saturday that they would be back next year with a 6 month closure request?

The antis ask for that every year, they will not get it next year, or the year after, or the year after that...eventually they will because there are only a few sportsmen willing to finance a million dollar campaign to battle them.
