Do it yourself Co elk hunt

I am interested in learning all I can about a DIY Elk hunt on public land in COlorado.

Cow or Bull? Resident or non-resident? Bow, smokepole, or rifle. Camp or motel? Preference points or no preference points?

I have done all my hunts DIY but I live here and know the system and lots of country. Overall success rate is about 22% and for bulls it's alot less than that. For a novice DIY you are facing poor odds at killing a legal bull if that's your measure of success. For a cow you odds go way up...plus seasons are longer.
