Best Utah Elk Guide/Outfitter

Have a friend that has lots of PP's and thinks he will draw this year. We both are wondering who is the best guide/outfitter in Utah for trophy elk. I'm even interested in a landowners permit and would like your input on both questions.
Don't know the unit/hunt he applied for and don't really know where the best elk come from....so, any info would be appreciated. Kinda new to the forum...so, hope I'm not out of line with the questions.

MossBack.. Hands down.

Absolutely, when you look at the number of huge Bulls the kill, there is no question. Just hope you kill one that is 399 so you don't have to pay the $5000 trophy fee.

:( Somebody didn't like bouncing betty :(

Don't get me wrong, Mossback is hands down a world class outfit. I do however recommend a little secret. If you draw any of the Southern Region Tags you need to ping me. Lost Lake Outfitters is the way to go. The Owner is a personal friend of mine and kills big bulls year in and year out. Everybody can do what they want, but if he draws any of the Southern Utah unit Elk tags send me a PM and I'll set you up with him.

Im feeling lucky and plan on a Dutton muzzleloader tag. Im looking at possibly going guided. I 2 could use some help finding one

If you like to have someone point in the direction to shoot and then go home I would get Mossback.. But if you want to get out and hunt I would round up your buddies and get after it..

Rammu, since I am gathering you know little about how Mossback guides, I will tell those interested in a quality hunt with a quality Outfitter, you can't do better than Mossback, southern Utah included. No one kills bigger elk, no one kills more big elk, it's that simple. You will still have to hunt hard in order to be successful, but if you hire Mossback, your odds of killing a book class bull will be increased. But, don't make the mistake of thinking by hiring Mossback, it is a, "someone pointing in the direction to shoot and then go home" type deal. That is flat out not true and a myth and/or dis-honest claim.

TROY JUSTISEN EXTREME OUTFITTERS OR KIM BONNET BUCK AND BULLS. THEY DON'T ADVERTISE LIKE MOSSBACK, BUT THEY BOTH PRODUCE. YEAR AFTER YEAR. I JUST WISH I COULD AFFORD THEM.

Guy Mills of Gooch's Guide Service would be my top pick on a couple of units. Give him a call. He is from Helper UT. He has a very good operation and also kills many 400" bulls. Check all of your options before hiring one.

Talk to Proutdoors, He's the man on Dutton.

JREDBUCK-
Thanks for the plug for Bucks & Bulls, i work for them.
However....it's very rare when we have a public groung tag, we are mainly a private lands outfitter. But there are plenty of excellent guides in our organization that know these public grounds very well and most are eager to help someone kill a bull of a lifetime when they aren't busy guiding other clients.

Hey guys after 10 years I finaly got my LE elk tag. Mt Dutton muzzleloader here I come! Im looking for all the help I can get.

prooutdoors.. Your right.. All Mossback clients fly in to utah and get out there and scout the bulls all summer themselves. They then fly back to their homestate and when it is time to hunt they just happen to have a Guide standing there telling them about what it will score and then hand them the Mossback BIpod and then tell them when to shoot. I DISAGREE..

Have you EVER been on one of these 'canned' hunts? I didn't think so. Keep talking out your backside about things you know nothing about. It kills me how many 'experts' there are on how things get done, when the 'experts' have no idea. Priceless.

Pro.. Guiding is great.. For Fishermen! Again I ask.. Why does it thrill you to take someone not willing to find the trophy themselves? If it was your best bud or a close one I say hell ya take em to it.. A stranger from who knows where? Thats dumb! just my opinion and fortunately for all of us we can have one..

Not having the resouces to hire a guide leaves me with only an oppinion as well. IF I had the money I would hire Mossback. The other guides mentioned above are extremely successful. IMO no one puts more giant elk down on the ground than Mossback. You don't have to like them or agree with them. The questions was who is the BEST. The answer will always be subjective. Several years the "best" bulls have been killed by Do It Yourselfers as well. To each his own. Good luck to all of you on the hunts. It is all about ethical fair chase! Have a great day.

Rammu,

Why hi-jack this guys post because guides are not your cup of tee? You dont like it, dont drink it.. But let others ask questions and get them answered without having people being bashed for using guides. Seriously man, get a life and read the topic "Best Utah Elk Guide/Outfitter".

Well said Browtine. I'll give a nod to Doyle and the boys as well. There are several others that are very capable as well.

Its a long way to the top if you want to Rock and ROLL A BIG BULL:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Well said Browtine, there many great guides out there, Doyle Moss just happens to be the front runner.

If I remember right, the topic is "Best Utah Elk Guide/Outfitter". Like they said, don't hijack the topic if you are talking DIY and the buddy system and all.
Mossback does kill the most big bulls in the state, and you can ask the guys who have hunted with him if it is just a point and shoot deal. Sure that happens, but most of the hunts will work any hunter to exhaustion. Ask the father & son team, the Broadbents, if they had a point and shoot experience or if they hiked their guts out to get to the bulls. Sure, Ron's bull was easy, but that was due to a lot of scouting and knowledge of the bull. Ask Ron if the last few years have been point and shoot situations. He has hunted hard the past years, and gone home empty on some hunts.
Ask Denny Austed if it is as easy as you guys say.
The post again was "Best Utah Guide/Outfitter"...
If a guy wants a DIY hunt for the pure satisfaction, more power to him. That is the way I have always done it, and been happy with my success, but for the best Utah guides, Mossback is my vote also!
Rick

Just ask my 9 year old daughter! Its Doyle or none at all. Every year she has Doyle sign his latest DVD at the ISE show. They flat out produce year in and year out. They have the track record and history to back up any arguments otherwise.
As to the debate on being guided....better start a new post.

Well said Brandon....I don't argee with hiring a guide either, but that just because I take pride in locating and hunting a trophy myself. But for some people they don't have the time, nor the knowledge of the area to do so. So guides are there for them. If i did hire a guide, i would have to say Doyle's series of videos would be enough for me to hire them. Mossback 100%.

Thanks guys for all the info and your inputs. My friend was not successful...but we will retain the lessons learned for next year. When I posted ....I had hoped.... there would not be a *ick bumping over using guides or not using. I appreciate everyones opinion as they are like arse holes.....everyone has one...if they are lucky.
Here in my home state (Alaska)I would not use a guide....just like most of you in Utah......but when it comes down to a once in a lifetime permit and having a good camp with comports and someone that knows the area....a man is crazy not to hire a good guide. Yes, I know there are some bad ones out there. That was the reason for the post and I'm sure all of you gave us your best recommendations. So, again thanks.
Another thing...when you get to be 60 years old....you don't have to much time to waste on scouting and not too many more years to draw.
Good luck to everyone that did draw......have fun and be safe. The biggest is not always the best.... I have been told.
Until next time.

You probably know if your friend has drawn or not by now--Good Luck. There are a lot of WANNA-BE-GUIDES out there now, Be Careful! Find out if the guide is licensed and insured and ask for a list of credible references (Call them all!) Guides like Guy Mills of Gooch's Guide Service and Doyle Moss of Mossback are probably the top 2 elk guides in the state right now because they know how to kill BIG elk, know how to treat their hunters and have clients that keep coming back (There's a reason for that). A few calls and some research can turn into a great time and a Monster Bull...........

How do you get a hold of Guy Mills, does any one have a phone number for him, does he hunt Panguitch Lake? Any other suggestions on a guide for this unit?
BR

Guy Mills phone number is 435-472-8251 or his cell 435-630-1839. Good choice and good luck!

hands down lost lake outfitters is the only way to go. if your looking to kill an awsome bull and have a hunt of a lifetime get ahold of lost lake outfitters 435-862 1249

If you are hunting anywhere in southern utah get ahold of wild west outfitters thay are second to none. Especially on dutton, panguitch lake, or beaver Mt. Dont forget they guided the state record nontypical muzzleload bull last year. You can see the bull on the big bull trophy contest it was # 2. Not to mention some of the other big bulls thay have taken. You can contact kyle at [email protected] or give him a call at 435-577-2073 or 435-619-3426

wild west?????

so what did the poaching reward tag holder in 05 get on dutton? what about your 05 archery dutton guys? don't forget that either.

the 05 archery dutton killed a bull that scored 358. The bull was in Eastman's bowhunting journal and he was plumb tickled. As for the other guy, he never had it scored, but he was probably a 360 bull but he was broken really bad.

There is a lot of talk about who is the best and this guy did this and this guy did that. I just wanted to post a few pictures all ELK killed by LOST LAKE OUTFITTERS not to mention his own archery bull that grossed 390. I'm telling you if you don't have a guide already and you want to kill a big bull. Get a hold of this outfit. PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING.

Why is this bull on Mossbacks list for 06 if it was guided by lost lake?

LAST EDITED ON May-06-07 AT 06:42PM (MST)[p]LAST EDITED ON May-06-07 AT 06:33 PM (MST)

because Jesse guided this bull. Jesse is lost lake outfitters Jesse helped Mossback out with this bull, he is friends with one of the guys something like that.

LAST EDITED ON May-06-07 AT 06:57PM (MST)[p]wildwest,

the guys i seen on the last day in 05 with you had long faces, they ate tag soup. no 350 bulls there. the other guy told me 380+ or nothing over and over. his neighbor claims that bull is 320-330. seems he fell way shy of his lofty goals.

too bad the archery guys failed to connect even after you were given the consideration to hunt those bulls uninterupted. it is just too bad you cannot give a guy the same consideration 2 days later. had i known your true colors i would have ran those bastards clear to unit 8 in arizona. next time try to be more quiet when sneaking past a guy's camp. make sure you do not call again this year drumming up business. i will call NUNYA and mossback.;-)

btw; nice bull photos 30buck!

OUCH! Sounds likde wild west needs some biz since sumone is going clear outta his way to drum up some biz right here on this post. I say dont call an outfitter at all and if you see em in the hills give em thumbs up cause they are cool guys that run these mountains.. hehehe

KTC
It would only be fair if I knew what you were talking about. I never interupted anybodys hunt to my knowledge besides that we were not even hunting on the last day of any hunt in 05. If you have a problem it would be nice to know who you are. I am not trying to discredit anybody or cause any grief. I was not there when my rifle hunter killed his bull that year my wife was having a baby at that time. I did have a sub guide with him when he killed. I know nothing about what you are talking about if we interupted your hunt at all I apologize and I would like to know what happened.

you had 1 or 2 archery guys with you on the last day on dutton in 05. you personally asked me to stay out of the area in DC so you could hunt these bulls. 2 days later i told you where we were hunting as we had seen some bulls that morning. does 2 guys on horses following you to the spot you tied up (same spot we told you we were headed) ring a bell? how about a hot blonde in a red car? what about the wall tent south of your camp? i rode straight to your camp to discuss this when we came off of the mountain, but you packed up and left.

Speek up wildwest, it appears KTC has you backed up against the wall on this one. I wouldn't want to be the one that pissed off KTC or his brother, someone could get hurt, and my money's on the Calton boys. I think your apology just might be a few years late. If I were you I would stay away from the Dutton this year, I do believe Mrs KTC has a tag for the area this fall.

Hey ktc,
Looks like wildwest has dissappeared into the "wild west"..
I was hoping to see the response to what you had to say.
I hope that you don't have problems with them this year! I'm sure that you wouldn't be quite so cooperative when they ask you to stay out this year, huh? LOL..
Hope Mrs ktc is getting excited to get her Big Stinky Bull!
a*r

Nobody has said anything about Triple H Outfitters? I would look into them also.

I heard some things about mossback, I heard they told someone out scouting for their own tag, to leave the area and that this area was theres or something to that nature. I have no idea if it was true, have you heard of things like this happening?

I dream of the day somebody tells me to stay out of a hunting area. Might have to video the fight and send it to UFC. LOL

I am a pretty accomadating person. I was asked to stay back so the guide could hunt the elk in the area. I did so because I did not have a tag and my brother's hunt opened the following day. Instead of talking, which I tried to do, we sat on each other and everyone's morning was ruined. I would do the same thing for anyone else, except that guy.

ktc, I would just ask you to go in with me.

If even 5% of the rumors about Mossback were true it would be an improvement over the percentage of them that are even close today. I guess it makes some feel better to run down those who get it done. Says something about ones own character.

I have NEVER asked someone to stay out of 'my' area, and I have never had anyone ask me to stay out of 'their' area. I have had 'locals' tell me the "whole damn mountain" was theirs and they could do whatever they darn well pleased. I have never heard a guide/outfitter say that.

PRO

I have never had an encounter with Mossback. I have some friends who work for him and the only one that seems to cause any trouble is NUNYA.;-) That is not on the mountain though.

ktc I know and have hunted with this outfitter. I believe I may have been the one with him when the incident took place. I may be the one that you think was "long faced". I did kill with him, I don't recall any of it happening like that, he never asked you to stay out. he said he had a hunter and that was it. It seems that you are blaiming your own misfortune on him. he did move his camp the first day of the rifle hunt. He is a stand up guy and as nice a guy as you can get. Don't believe me read the article in the latest trophy hunter written by someone else he has taken. You have caused enuf drama out of nothing. maybe the reason he doesn't respond is because he has some class!!!!

I wish he would respond. We need more class around here.

Even if he just showed up and said, "Here I am, what are your next two wishes". It would be awesome.

I said my piece trelk. You have your facts skewed because you wer NOT there. No one killed any bulls during the time I am talking about.

Trelk its not proutdoors its poutoutdoors . He is real good at pissing a guy off.

Good2,

Did you kill the monster with the muzz? Congrats to you?

Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut until I had a chance to talk to him face to face. I am confused at what misfortune? We killed an awards bull which is hardly any misfortune. What did you kill in 05 trelk? I would love to see him.

I am just stating that my encounter was, shall I say, chickenshit.I am done with this subject......

Yes, pro likes causing trouble! HA!
