Some friends and I are looking for a do it yourself elk hunt for 08. Not particular to any state, but looking for a good opportunity. Archery preferred and a good chance to draw a tag. Not looking for anything huge, saving that for when I finally draw an AZ tag, but until then....anyone have any experience with this? I would appreciate any guidance.
Thanks,

Scott G.

Colorado is probably one of the best choices, but it kind of depends on where you're coming from. If you live right next to a good elk state, it makes sense to hunt there, as you can hopefully get in at least one week long scouting trip in the summer, or several long-weekend trips. Scouting is the key to being successful. (IMO)

Don't you guys get it. It's the scouting that gets the elk up and out of their area. LEAVE THEM ALONE

You are out of your mind contender!! Evidently all of the successful hunters I know including myself are wrong when it comes to scouting. I don't know any good hunter that doesn't consider scouting a huge part of their success. If you don't scout you don't kill (unless your damn lucky).

It's always an adventure!!!

Sure scouting is very important for any hunt.

On elk it is helpful for finding fall rutting wallow water seeps and good rub area's and maybe even some pattern of bedding area's to feeding area's.

Glassing from a far is great for finding elk that are hanging in a certain area for the hunt start dates and so forth.

Depends on how and when ya scout I guess.

If you don't scout, how do you know you're even in an area that holds elk? To scout you don't have to walk right through their feeding and bedding areas.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the input. I currently live in Fresno, CA...so Co would be very do-able. Have truck, will drive! LOL. I know scouting is important...learned that at an early age.
Thanks for you input! Crazyboutcoues...I'm sending you a PM!

Thanks again!

I have some great land owner tags for sale, but there is no scouting allowed on my ranch. It is a very popular Utah unit, I think its region# 434248.1090 aka "bonneville zalt flats unit". It's known for big stinky's. PM me for info and prices.

Hey Bud

Can I get two of them sweet big bull tags?

No need to scout... as a guy can 'see for miles' on opening day!

Of course I am not serious about not scouting an area. You must know where the elk will be to hunt them. Glassing from a distance is a much better choice than tramping thru the feeding and bedding areas. A lot of people like to photograph elk and it doesn't seem to bother them.

PDub, the Colorado archery idea is perfect for DIY. The 2 NM guys can probably really increase your odds but NM is still a draw unless you buy a LO tag. Draw odds are real good in some areas in the guide draw though. If you are looking for a cost effective hunt, archery in Colorado is a possibility but you'll need info about specific areas to increase your success.

What are you expecting??? Good time with friends, maybe a chance at an elk, probably a cow OR really getting into elk most days?? Like most things, you get what you pay for, either in time or $$$$. If you plan on this as a yearly event, the Colorado, public land, DIY hunt can work well. reseach and find an area. Your success rates will go up as you learn the area and habits of the elk in that particular area.
