Utah deer / elk combo tag

A friend here in Oregon against my advice put in for and drew a Nothern Utah combo tag, is this a decent hunt or just a crowded meat hunt? I've never hunted the north part of the state but he didn't draw anything special from what little I know of the open area. he's thinking of getting an outfitter but I'm wondering if he should worry about it since he only wants quality animals and can't spend a fortune. it's hard to tell a guy who drew his first out of state tag he's got a turkey, am I wrong on this?

I wouldn't bother with an outfitter. Most of the outfitters run on CWMU's that you wouldn't need that tag for anyway. If he is willing to hike for several hours up some steep chit every morning there is some good bucks to be had, but you won;t see much worth shooting close to the roads. Is he focusing on Elk or Deer more? If he wants a shot at both, I would recommend trying to find some private land to access anywhere between Morgan and the Coalville/Chalk Creek area. Of course I have that same tag and am planning on killing a whopper ;-)

:( Somebody didn't like bouncing betty :(

Lots of big bucks in the unit. Like tony said, you have to hike to them. It will be tough to get both animals on public at the same time. I would focus several days on deer first, then move and hit the elk when the general tag crowd thins out. He got a great deer tag in my opinion and gets to hunt elk as a bonus. Private land access would help, but you don't need it. I passed on half a dozen decent bucks in that unit last year.

That is going to be a fun tag/hunt to have!

Not much different than the bow bull/buck hunt in pre-rut it is just post rut dates on a bull.

Hell forget about a guide.... he could 'basecamp' out of Evanston Wyo and hit rt. 150 and go for miles hunting any dorection on the Utah side of the border!

Or come out of Mountain View Wyo and go up to the Hoop Lake or Hole in the Rock area and hunt till his heart is content!

Branch antlered bulls and respectible bucks would be my expectations as I hunt bow for both in Sept. a pinch to the east on the North Slope...

Plus he could bail out a day or two early and back track to the Monte Cristo area via Evanston Wyo. north thru Woodruff, Utah and be legal on his combo tag south side of rt. 39 and chase some bulls and bucks on Monte Cristo area.... get a BLM land ownership map for Monte area...

Hell enjoy the tag and the experience!!

Thanks guys, sounds like a better hunt than I thought it was. I'll let him know, he'll be by himself and he's not a kid anymore but if it's a decent tag and he has a good time that's what matters .

You are absoletly right Huntindude! I'll bet at the very minimun he'll get his his adrinalin raised a few times! My family and I have hunted the North Slope for over 20 years, elk are always a little tougher to locate but they are there, I would take the above advice and hunt deer for about the first 4-5 days and then when the elk hunters thin out start looking for a big buck in elk country, and who knows maybe a big ole bull will show himself!!
Back when there were High Country Buck tags available we used to shoot some big Bucks during the elk hunt quite often, so we are very excited to have this combo tag available to us again!! There are some very nice bucks to be had with this hunt. Hell, one of my brothers killed a 28" heavy horned 4 point buck last year, and that was on the general deer hunt. We have been watching big bucks during the elk hunt for the last 5-6 years, mostly in the same areas, but there are diffently some trophy deer out there to be had, it's just they don't get big by being stupid.
When the hunt gets closer PM me and I'll give you some places to look at! My family all have this tag this year, but we concentrate on a small section that we have discovered in the last couple of years. I know some other areas in that neck of the woods that should be productive for deer and elk. And I don't mind helping people out that are new to this country. And I'm sure other people on this web site will prove just as helpful!!
Good luck!! And stay excited! Should be a blast!

Work to hunt!! Live to hunt!! And the rest spent keeping the wife happy!!
