I posted this in the Idaho form but I thought I'd try here also:

Anyone on here have any experience or advise on unit 51 for bulls? I'm going to be hunting Idaho this year, probably the general season but putting in for the chance on the controlled hunts and wanted to know about this area. Access (public/private), terrain (is it accessable without animals) and anything else would be great!

The unit is VERY steep. It is also a unit that does NOT allow for ATV use off road. If you get one prepair to either use a horse or backpack. Ron

I've hunted this unit for 24 years, it can be some of the meanest around. but we always see some good bulls. The problem is the butt heads that cant fallow the rules on there atv's. we take a camp back in for archery and have people ride right by at first light after you have been up all night listing to the bull bugle 200yards from the tent. One guy camped over the ridge from us stuck a bull first thing only to have this father and son team come riding over the ridge and run the bull off. Last I know he never found the bull. The best part is dad and son saw nothing wrong with rideing in every morning and then again in the early evening. cant wait for this year,my high school freind thats a fish and game officer, is takeing archery back up so the look on there face will be priceless!! ps Ive tried for 14 years to draw this darn tag and no luck, maybe this year!!! yea right.

Thanks steelheader. I appreciate the information, I'm looking forward to hunting Idaho this year but its always tough to start someplace totally new - nice to get a little lay of the land from people with knowledge!

I too have hunted it alot in the past and my family still deer hunts it each year. But man oh man does it have a lot of people in it along with a few wolves. I too have killed some nice bulls and seen many more but the number of elk has taken a dive in this unit these last few years. Three years ago I said to heck with it and went to another unit. Steelheader, I would guess you are hunting Sawmill Canyon Correct? I am 33 and my family always camps on Iron Creek, I have pictures of me as a baby in that camp. Just curious, where do you pack in? I have both 4wheelers and horses. Also there is not much of that canyon that my size 12 foot has not hiked in. By the way my wife drew out on the early hunt twice in this unit. The first time was 1997 and the second was 2004. In 97 a friend drew out too, on the 3rd day I called in a very nice bull to 80 yards. That bull after drying for a few months scores 371, that is the biggest that has came out of our camp. That same year a fellow from Mud Lake/Terreton killed a bull that scored 401, so yes there have been some awesome bulls in that unit in the past. With our bows we have killed several that were around the 300 range. But the last two years I hunted it (03, and 04) I only saw a handfull of elk and very few big bulls. Compared to the past we were used to seeing many elk and several big boys each day. From the mid 90's till about 2002 if a bowhunter wasn't seeing at least 200 elk per day then he/she wasn't hunting hard enough. NWElkHunter if you have any question please feel free to email me, I have a few hot spots were I know you can still find elk. Hope this helps Jason
