At the Sportsmen for Fish & Wildlife Banquet in Provo tonight, the statewide deer tag went for $81,000!!!!!! Let me tell you as an SFW committee member and supporter, that is huge! That money generated will go a long way to helping to get the Utah deer herds back to where they should be.
Many other tags also generated some incredible dollars.

The sportsmen of Utah, lead in part by SFW, really have power nowadays. Every person running for governor attended and spoke. They know the importance of being of the side of sportsmen. In fact, I even chatted with Mr. Huntsman jr. for several minutes last week. Pretty cool.

So that's that. Good things are happening. Yes, I'm a cheerleader, simply because I see things happening, and quick!

Not sure who the guide was. Someone who I do not know. But, I would have to say he's confident.

How come you weren't bidding? Only $81,000! LOL

Yes, another tax write-off, but man, what a great deal of money that was raised. Whether you like the idea of selling these tags or not, the money does a lot to help the wildlife---bottom line.

There is no deer in Utah worth $81,000! And by the time it's all said and done you can bet it will be a $100,000 deer that this guy kills

Man it looks like the price of everything went up this year. but on a more important note . what did the beartags and cougar tags go for???? wish i could of made it to the banquet .....beardog

I dont think that there is a deer tag anywhere worth $81,000! At least not in my eyes, we pay a lot less than that in Sonora and kill deer every bit as big. I am glag that others will pay it though, it goes to a GREAT cause!

I am glad that the guys with that kind of money do buy them. Yes it would be easier and a lot less expensive to go to Mexico but the money generated is well worth it. I'm amazed that the elk tags didn't go for more.

While I support the idea of raising lots of money for management, I found the whole process to be a bit of a prostitution of our states resource.

Watching all the guides on their cell phones to their dudes left a sour taste in my mouth.

I was the only person who I talked to the whole night that would have taken the Pahvant Elk permit. Everyone else was more interested in the 4 wheelers and trailer. Most so that they could sell them and take the cash.

Seems like the whole process is about money and much less about hunting anymore.

Please don't take this as a slam of the SFW, but as an observation of someone new to the whole scene wildlife auctions. I still can't decide if it's all a such a good thing.

Cheers,
Pete

Well, I agree, there's no deer worth $81,000. Unless of course, I was rich and $81,000 was just a drop in the bucket, then what would it matter. To a lot of people, $81,000 is like a couple hundred to most of us. And I spend a couple hundred, or more, every year.

Pete - I understand where you're coming from, but as you know, money is what makes the difference. We need that money to help get the right people into office, to buy land, etc.
Where would SFW be if there wasn't money to help influence decisions on the hill and in D.C.? We'd just be another organization of dude's doing "feel good" projects that really don't help much.

The money is needed and used to make big things happen. With the right people in office, habitat management policies can be changed, federal money can be set aside just for mule deer issues, wolves can be delisted and managed properly, etc.

It's the way of the world, isn't it?

Who gives a rats asss how much these fools spend on these tags. It all goes to Utah wildlife, not too other states like RMEF, and the Mule deer foudation do!!!

Like Mr. "Banned" "founder" "big spender" himself stated, " It would be like me or you spending 200 bucks!!" more like spending $10
These guys are spending $81,000 like me and you are spending $10

There's not one hunter in this forum that would not hesitate on droping $10 for a statewide deer tag.

See the big picture yet.??

Heck guys you ever though about buying that tag for the tax right off. Those rich guys don't buy the tag just for the tag or to support wildlife.

My question would be how much of the money raised actualy goes to habitat.....?......

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

Totally agree we need the money for our cause,
what don't think we need is listening to those politicians for a 1/2 hour, I won't set through that again, had I left that could have saved me a lot of money too, its one thing to bring them down give them free dinner & let them see our numbers, it's totally something else to give them the floor for that long. If your on the committee next year Brian, please mention that. the last 2 years Tony has mentioned numerous times he knows we are way late of our schedule, saying no, to political hacks could correct that problem,

Someone mentioned SFW only gets 10% of the proceeds from the banquet, anyone know if that is true ?

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

Unfortunalely if you are not part of the political process you are out of the game. You can be sure the groups against your interest will be.

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

This was way past being part of political process,
as you drove up, all one could see were political banners,
then while walking through the tunnel to get in, you were approached at least 5 or 6 times by political groups waving tracts in your face,
then your greeted by them verbally sparring on the podium.

I was approached less, last time I walked down main street, Tijuana

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

$81,000 for a Forky. Man, that's damn expensive. LMAO!!! I'm surprised there were any bidders after the news was let out on MM by that 30 inch dude that there are no big deer anywhere in Utah anymore. LOL!

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

Someone said it already and if we are not involved in the Political process we as hunters will be left out. I dont ever forsee that I will have this kind of money, but I do appreciate how much these tags generate for wildlife and I see how the game departments start giving respect and meetings to groups that have the cash. Here in AZ it is really helping with the amount of money our tags are getting at banquet time. I can tell you that the Arizona Deer Association puts back the whole 100% of the generated revenue into wildlife. We are allocated the tags and the funds generated subsidize the AZGFD projects...... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

I'd like to ad my thanks and appreciation for the guys and gals who volunteered their time to make this happen (and those who volunteer for any of the conservation groups out ther!).

Without them we would be almost without representation.

Good job people,

BeanMan

LAST EDITED ON Mar-23-04 AT 03:10PM (MST)[p]I would like to thank everyone that came out to support the banquet. I know that it was to long, and that it can't be that long every year. Having the gov on our side is bigger than anything else we could have. The gov appoints the wildlife board and will have alot to do with habitat and wolf issues. the highlight of the night was helping a very special little boy that is not going to be with us much longer. Accual money to wildlife is over half a million from that night. The rmef had a very good night as well. Wildlife did pretty well saturday night. Thanks to everyone who came out. Next year will be shorter. The gov will be decided. Thanks Again everyone. John Bair SFW

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

Here's a shot of fishon (left) and 10r as they worked the crowd and raised money for that little boy. You guys did great (Everyone who put on the show), you all should feel proud not only for all that you did to help wildlife, but also for that little guy.

BCBOY,
You send me a message in my personal box telling me it's time to let it go. I haven't really posted much directed at you since. Then you continue posting little digs at me. You need to grow up!!!! And shut your trap!!! As far as the banquet I just hope wildlife will actually see some of that money and not the greedy individuals in power.

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

10r, thanks for being aware of that issue, I'm sure you fellers got home way after me & I live 2 hours + south of there.
That was awesome what you did for that boy & his family.

Cabin, if someone pays more than the actual value of something in this case an American flag, then that money is considered a charitable donation.

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

LMAO... 30"er you just can't stand it can you? People with money and influence accumulated their wealth by ripping off the little guy. eh. Is that the way you feel?? It seems most of your posts are envy driven. Most of these "Greddy Individuals in Power" are just like you and me and most everyone else here in MM land. Most of them have worked their arse off for years and IMO deserve what ever they can afford. Yes, even a chute plane if they have balls enough to fly one. Very few of these gentlemen are the Ted Kennedy type who live off the public trough and have inherited the "bucks" from daddys estate.
Good luck on your draws. Rick

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

YollaBolly,
If you read my post, the greedy individuals I was referring to are the politicians and others with their hands out for some under the table money and not the hunters that purchased the tags. I also said and meant that I hope all or most of the money will end up actually benefiting wildlife, and not go for all the hidden expenses not seen by everyone. Also, good luck on all your draws. Hopefully, you will get lucky this year.

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

30 inch,
Good to see ya still around here. My poking fun is just that. I haven't said anything malice towards you. You're the one that set yourself up for a little jabbing. Telling me to stop picking on you is kinda like CASS or Old Organ saying the same thing. LOL! I hope you can see the fun of this place. I have invited you to join in with that fun many times. Hell, start poking fun at me. Buttspy, Huntswannaknitsweaters and others seem to enjoy themselves at my expense. And guess what, I'm thick skinned enough to laugh along. And if you didn't notice my post on this thread was way more of a Jab at Utah than at you. LOL!

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

Man that picture sure makes me look fat. I promise I look alot better naked.

As far as the night goes the auction for brigham was by far the highlite of the night for me. I was able to take the family over $10,000 today and spent over an hour with them. Hunting and deer tag auctions were a very distant 2nd at that fundraiser as far as importance goes.

I dont expect everyone to agree with everything that sfw is trying to do but I do expect everyone to try and do something for wildlife. As soon as I feel there is a better boat to ride i will jump aboard and ride it but until that time i will bleed sfw.

Thanks for all who attended and donated there time and money. If I am involved next year i promise to be done by 10:30 p.m.

thanks again

tony

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

10:30 now thats a good one Tony.

As far as the politicians we should be thankful they only spoke as long as they did. I got to talk with a few of them that night and they were all very impressed with SFW and the sportsmen of Utah. You can bet whoever is elected Gov. this fall will listen to the sportsmen and we will get individuals on the big game board who will represent hunters and our values.
They all know who SFW is and what we can do. So look at it as one nights sacrife to listen to some politicians for years worth of respect and notice from them. Other then there party conventions they will not be at many bigger fund raisers/events from now to the election.
As far as where the money goes SFW gets a small for and the rest goes to conservation projects and nothing else. I am on the Utah County SFW chapter committee and have a list of projects submitted by the DWR and the money raised at the banquet and other funds that can be had from the government will be well spent.
Those high dollar tags raise alot of money and some folks have issues with them but they do more then just raise money. They open eyes of those in office of how important our wildlife resources are and how passionate people are in protecting and keeping them as a renewable resource. All you had to do was talk with the candidates or there staffers about what they saw Sat. night and you will have a different opinion about how big "the banquet" was. I talked with a staffer for M Stevens and he had no idea how big hunting was in Utah but he does now.

Thanks to all who supported us.
Dave

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

So glad to hear that the SFW had a good turnout and raised a ton of money!!! Who was the little boy that they were raising money for? The banquet is in my area this Saturday--won a gun safe there last year!

RE: Utah Statewide Deer Tag - Big $$$

Tony,Jon and all the rest of the people involved, the banquet was great,The money raised for the little boy and the man that was paralyzed speaks volumes about sfw and its people.....great job guys.........P Pennie

I THINK IT IS GREAT THAT THESE PEOPLE ARE SPENDING BIG DOLLARS ON HUNTS AND IN THE PROCESS HELPING OUT ALL OF US IN THE PROCESS. IF I HAD THE MONEY I WOULD BUY ONE OF THESE TAGS MYSELF. THEY DO GOOD THINGS WITH THE MONEY RAISED THAT WILL/AND DO BENEFIT ALL OF US HUNTERS.
