Montana archery elk

I drew a Montana Elk/Deer general license and will be looking to archery hunt only, primarily for elk. What are anyone's experiences hunting the archery units of 410, 620 and also 411? It looks as if there are tons of people with tags in past years for these units. Is it possible to have an enjoyable hunt here or is it too frustrating because of the number of hunters? Any information is appreciated. Thanks

Cool country but lots of people. You should see elk though. Personally, I think there are better places to hunt, but, I do put in for a rifle tag in that area.

These are good areas to find a decent Elk. I strongly urge you to review the regs carefully. I know that 620 is a permit only and must be obtained by drawing.

LAST EDITED ON May-10-07 AT 11:46PM (MST)[p]I hunted there last year and had two people follow me. Every time I came out there was a white chev with idaho plates and a silver ford with Montana plates.

I quit hunting from the truck and started to leave early in the morning with the quad. There will be plenty of people that is for sure...

I only saw smaller 300 inch bulls in the unit. I did see a hurd that was about 110 strong with 5 bulls that would easy go 350+...

Research the regs. Most rifle draw units you can hunt archery with your tag. I'd look there. And if its not too late, apply for the controlled rifle now that you have the tag. At least apply for the very best like a late season Gardiner hunt or something. If you draw, you can still archery hunt with your tag.

Thanks everyone for the info. I am looking at applying in either 410 or 620, in the archery only season, not sure which one yet and I believe 411 is a general archery unit. Has anyone archery hunted 411 before in September?

I've hunted 411 for the past 5 years now. There is lots of private land were the elk are. There is a huge section of the Snowy Mountains that is public and I'm sure there are elk up there too. My friend outfits his ranch for archery in this unit and there are some Monsters. It won't surprise me if in the next few years and top 5 bull gets killed. If your looking for guided check out www.bowhuntelk.com it would be a fun hunt.
