So I'll be moving to the phoenix area in August. I'm a little concerned about the heat/hunting etc, but you've got to go where the job takes you. So apparently I will not be considered as a resident hunter for six months after I move. I was wondering is everything a draw for mule deer and elk for residents and non residents in Arizona?

Tooele,

General deer seasons are draws but archery tags are over the counter. Elk on the other, they are just luck no matter how you want to hunt them. Unless you want throw a cow hunt into the mix you're looking at about 6 or 7 year average wait between good quality hunts...........

You picked a helluva time of year to grace us with your presence
there fire ball...Good luck on that...

Welcome to Arizona. Just a little note to let you know what you're getting yourself into...March 21st, 3:27PM temp in my area was 104! Yesterday, 3-22, again the hotspot in the nation, 102. It's March for goodnessakes!!! What happened to spring?

Seriously, your opportunities to hunt elk will be tough if you're after a bull, much better if you're after an antlerless elk. You can draw deer hunts with a fair degree of regularity so long as you're not after any of the buck rifle hunts conducted north of the Colorado River. If that's the case...well, you're likely to wait for years and years and years.

Good Luck on your move. One good thing about coming out in August though, you'll be arriving during what should be a nice pennant race in the NL West with our D'Backs hopefully in the mix.

I echo everything AZBuckSnort says above, Welcome to AZ, Aug is also when you can buy over the counter Mule Deer tags, I am sure you will be plenty busy with the move but it might give you some incentive to get everything moved in and enjoy the outdoors after the move.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-24-04 AT 11:51AM (MST)[p]Drawing a resident tag is not as bad as some people make it out to be. I have draw 3 unit 7 bull tags in less than 10 years. Many of my friends have drawn unit 6a and 4 bull tags with ZERO bonus points. MUCH MUCH harder to draw a really good Mule Deer or Antelope tag. Even some December Whitetail hunts are getting harder to draw than bull Elk.

I moved here from Maine about 7 years ago. "No rain" bothers me far more than heat. That being said, my first year out here (with my Maine pickup) had no A/C - it t opped out at 118 that summer. Ick. There are far more hunting and fishing opportunities here, than most people think.

A tip of the cap to you for your success rate at drawing bull tags in unit 7 (33.3%), you've been fortunate. I can tell you that my experience has been far different. A total of 2 tags, both archery, since 1986 and I'm making a reasonable selection in position two on my application. No rifle deer tag since 1990, forget about a sheep permit. I have drawn three pronghorn tags though! It all boils down to the luck of the draw. Here's to keeping the fingers, toes, and eyes crossed for 2004.
Good Luck to all!

Thanks for your comments, it sounds like I can get in on some bow hunting, Looking forward to coming to Arizona heat and all
