For those headed to Montana

It appears that the deer herd came through the winter in okay shape. Some winter kill but not as bad a feared. The Milk River Valley is still loaded with Whiteys and have heard that the muley in the Breaks are also in decent shape. What took the brunt of winter is the antelope. Man they have been really hit hard.

License of course. Do you think someone would say, "I have a 75% chance of killing something this year." I guess I need to word it a little better for you next time MThunter.

The reason I asked is because it definitely is NOT a 75% chance at drawing a license. It's more like 40% chance for the out of state, non-outfitter combo tag.

Sorry if you took it the wrong way - I wasn't trying to be flippant.

ps. Not that you would, but there are definitely some people (even here on this site) that WOULD say they have a 75% or higher chance of killing something.

Good luck to you in drawing a tag and your hunt.

No harm done MTbullhunter. When I called MT fish and game they were the one's that told me I had a 75% chance of drawing. Maybe they just wanted my $3.00 non-refundable fee!

Where ya from MTbullhunter? I was there last year on an antelope and mule deer hunt, out of Winifred. Boy it sure was a lot of fun. Can't wait to go back...

I have a cabin and some land north of Jordan, bordering the CMR in the Missouri Breaks. Pretty good muley hunting (a lot of bucks in the 120-160 range, occassionally you'll see a real nice one.) Also, pretty good antelope hunting, although it's one of the more popular antelope districts in the state, so it gets a lot of pressure. It's really known for it's elk hunting - some very nice bulls, but not a huge herd. There's a limited number of rifle tags for bulls (I've never drawn one in over ten years of trying), but the archery tags are unlimited.

If you draw a tag, let me know. We can compare notes, etc.

Hey Bullhunter, have you heard anything about how the deer are fairing north of Jordan there? Hell Creek/Snow Creek and west to 7 Blackfoot? Seems like the last 3 years they've been getting some older bucks, hate to see them get totally hammered this year.

Good Luck on that Elk Tag. I know a landowner at 7 Blackfoot that's got it 3 times in the last 6 years?????!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've heard that they did OK. There was a lot of snow this winter, in some cases drifting ups to 5-6 feet deep in the coolies. However, it seemed like the tops stayed pretty much brushed off, so hopefully the deer had some refuge.

I share the same feelings as you - we have been seeing some nicer bucks the last 2 years, as well as a few more elk, and I hope they come out of the winter ok.

Drew the tag 3 times in 6 years??? He should start playing lotto.

i just put in for montana bucks around the cascade area. last time i was there hunting does i saw tons of bucks and they would just stand there 40 yards away. the does were the ones that were spooky

Maybe it has something to do with "landowner Preference" bullhunter? I dont know. All I know, is it seems he's Constantly hunting 700 for elk with rifle!
