CO 3rd season rut??

What stage of the rut is generally during CO's 3rd rifle season. Is there any breeding, doe chasing going on or are the bucks still in there bachelor groups not interested(in does) at this time?

It'll be close, I think much of it will depend on the weather preceeding the hunt. If you get cold and snow, they might just begin looking for does. Last year and the year prior, they were beginning to snoop around the does during the hunt.
For the most part however, the real action won't happen until after the 3rd season hunt is over. The season is probably just a little too early for heavy ruttin' action.

Bottomline, don't plan on it.

Photoperiod (day length) has the most to do with rutting activity. Weather can play a minor role as well as moon phase. Usually the most heavy rutting takes place in mid November to around thanskgiving. There may be bucks chasing does but more than likely it will be young bucks thinking they can breed. The bigger bucks may not be far off but generally dont get cranked up by the sight of does until 4th rifle season and later.

What Founder say is pretty accurate so not much more can be added to this discussion. The bucks are looking for an excuse this time of year and for whatever reason, some of them are pushed to the horny and stupid stage by some snow and cold. Most big deer don't get that way during the season though. The more snow, the more the deer are convinced that hunting season is over and it time to chase the girlies.

i live in that area and did not see much rut activity until about the 20th of November or so.

Most of what I've seen of the 3rd and 4th rifle seasons in Colo is dink bucks chasing does around, but once in awhile (especially w/deep snow and cold weather) you'll see an occasional whopper buck in with does during these seasons. Some of the smart older bucks may be with does during the night hours and leave the does by first daylight...especially early in the rut. You can count on bucks of all age classes whooping it up starting Thanksgiving of each year.

If you head over to Western Colo units or other northern latitude states that have little hunting pressure/few November hunts you may see more old age class bucks w/does the first couple weeks of Nov.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-25-04 AT 08:19PM (MST)[p]Depending on the weather and some say moon phase, I have seen rutting bucks during the 3rd season, but snow is a must. Near Gunnison CO. during the 4th season I've had many chances at big bucks while elk hunting but of course no tag. I wish Colorado offered a late season ML hunt, that would be the best chance at a wallhanger in Western CO.
